Demand is off the scale, apparently. http://www.anandtech.com/show/11762/cryptomining-demand-drives-exceptionally-high-graphics-card-shipments-in-q2-2017 That's an insane spike for Q2 shipments

hashiee
I was just looking around at Amazon and now they are selling video card 6 packs   lol

On that article's comments about the "small market share change", they apparently were not aware that a lot of GPUs FROM NVidia have also been getting sold to cryptocoin miners, especially 1070 and 1060 models.
The spike is impressive, but they really needed to research their article better....

Also, that "Amazon" 6pack sale is not Amazon selling the cards, it's a third-party - and the price they're listing the cards at is pretty high, over $400 per card.
Would have been a "good" price 2 months ago, but with RX cards dropping in price some and availability getting a lot better....

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

I walked into Fry's Electronics by Portland, and the video card shelves are empty.

Was trying to decide what card to buy last night for my new rig.  Was looking on newegg and reading reviews.  Noticed prices were a bit higher on newegg than I'm used to.  Had some questions about specific models and was looking at buying EVGA, as I always have.  Found myself here on EVGA's website and noticed somewhat better prices.  I thought, "Okay, buying from the maker removes the middle man and ~20$+ off."  I was looking at 1060 for the 6G EveOnline clutter.  Ate a sandwich.  Passed out for four hours.  Woke up, EVGA shelves all say "auto notify".  Crypto's have boinked my plans and I'm thinking I'm just going to put this old hand me down Radeon 6870 in my rig until...  Oh...  It's not going to end.  And yet, I can see the end coming.

1060's have been coming in stock the last couple weeks and they are not immediately selling out.  Seems like they usuallly hit later in the afternoon.  Keep an eye out and I bet you can snag one this week.

Eve Online doesn't have high GPU requirements anyway - I used to play on a A10-5700 APU system for years, and even Jita didn't lag me out.
A 1050 would probably be overkill - and those have never had significant "shortage" related issues.

Best keep up on the availability thread on the 10 series forum and Jacobs Twitter feed. New stock gets announced all the time. The bundle deals are alright as well.

The bundle deals would be a lot better if you didn't get stuck wasting money on one of their junk cases.

Absolutely right.  It's good if you can get 2 GPU + 1 PSU + the casing.  Then the casing will end up at Mr. Craig Lister

Beware: a couple swear words.
Numbers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi5vUhB3rns

In summary, a research group estimates that approximately 6% of 2017's GPU supply was purchased for the sole purpose of mining where the other 94% was purchased for gaming, productivity, or other mixed uses. Not a big chunk, in the grand scheme of things. Also, NVIDIA and AMD enjoy the cryptocurrency demand helping them sell video cards, but they are concerned about some of the side effects of the cryptocurrency market (now and potentially even more so in the future) and they see gamers as their larger and more loyal market.

6% is a lot depending in the projected sales numbers. Certainly it sounds like the gamers were ready for an upgrade and Pascal delivered great performance uplift. The scientific community probably jumped onto the train as well causing a supply shortage. Hopefully most of the market will be satisfied as they start to ramp up the new line. It'll be interesting if Nvidia defibitivelt differentiates the gaming and cuda focused cards this time round.

it does beg the question for why there still a shortage. If gamers want to suggest those 6% would still be in stock without raising prices, that's up for debate. My money is on the manufacturers themselves, maybe they can't keep up and are both happy to blame miners while accepting their sales on the side. It's sad how many naysayers refuse to put blame on AMD/nVidia for allowing blockchain to begin with.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

I'm not sure how easily amd or nvidia could drop block chain support but it would be nice if they did except for the mining models

There's a shortage because they didn't want this to end up like Maxwell.  Nvidia didn't want to end up holding bags of cards they couldn't get rid of.  You know there is a problem with inventory when even EVGA here puts 980Ti's up for sale for stupid prices of $69 on the B-Stock sale, or like last year when new ones were going for $199.  Nvidia didn't want to run into the problem of having a warehouse full of stock and decided to let the customers fight it out with each other and thus make Nvidia the saviour when they say they want to sell to gamers, when in reality they don't care who buys their cards.

Cryptographers are too late, lol!
The ones who were the smartest, were the ones who have been mining during the time when bitcoin was low.
Now they can sell all their coins, at much higher prices.

On the other hand, RTX cards have never been cheaper. And they crunch numbers like a motha!
Especially the 2080 ti!

But you know what it means, rising bitcoin, more people getting on the bandwagon, harder to find good hashes, takes longer to mine, get less coins for your hardware, and only those with the fastest cards will be able to benefit from it.

Keep your RTX cards, sell your bitcoin, and do some folding for mankind!
