Re:Using 4GB RAM modules on a 790i series board 2017/11/03 15:40:26 (permalink)
Hi, new user here.

I have a 9-year old EVGA nVidia 790i Digital PWM that I'm trying to keep "competitive" by getting 16GB of RAM onto it. I've read that people have had luck force flashing the XFX p09 bios for the 790i Ultra onto the EVGA 790i (NON-digital versions) and am tempted to try this. However, have not seen anything about 790i Digital PWM board users trying this.

Specs:
Intel x5470 Quad-Core @ 4.17ghz (Modded to work on Socket 775) -- Overclocked/Linked/Sync'd
GSkill Sniper 1866 DDR3 8 GB (2x4gb) @ 1667mhz (Successfully tested on both Blue & Black ram slots on the mobo)
nVidia GTX 1060 6GB Vram (Just upgraded from a 660ti, benchmarks says the 1060 is 98% faster, and can confirm no bottlenecking here, upgrade was justified.).

Been gaming on a 2560x1600 Monitor which is fine for most games, but if I cannot upgrade the RAM to 16GB, then 1920x1080 would be the 'sweet spot' being stuck at 8GB RAM for the games of today & tomorrow.

I suspect that there isn't much difference between the Digital and Non-Digital versions of the 790i, thus in theory, this should work though I may lose features (VDroop control)?

Anybody here have any recommendations on how to go on about this? This is my first computer build and I would still love to happily use it for the next 5 years.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Welcome to the forums PCgamer911.

For now I suggest getting MSI Afterburner where you can see (in the Hardware Monitor) how much system RAM and video RAM you're actually using, as well as CPU and GPU usage while gaming and go from there..No sense in trying to get more system RAM to work if you're not using all, or nearly all of the 8GB you have now..Reply back with your findings.

Hi bob,

Thank you for the hospitality, for your time in assisting me and great idea to start off simple by checking the system.

I have Fallout 4, uTorrent, Firefox +20 tabs running. (Avg 75% CPU usage, 93% Max GPU Usage according to Afterburner during this test so no CPU/GPU issues).

Reviewing the readings through MSI Afterburner, while awesome, only tells half of the story regarding RAM usage. For the other half I used good ol' Windows Task Manager. Below are my findings when looking at both MSI Afterburner Hardware Monitor & the "Physical Memory (MB)" section of Windows Task Manager:

MSI Afterburner: 5372MB RAM usage (Reports only the RAM usage, not CACHED)
7782MB Pagefile usage (Not sure how this relates to things but including the info).

Windows Task Manager:

Physical Memory (MB)
Total 8190
Cached 2875
Available 2800
Free 20 (This number fluctuates as well and will often be single digits or even "0" at times)

Fallout 4 runs flawlessly 2560x1600 almost maxed out, will get the very occasional micro-stutter when outdoors once in awhile. So 8GB, for the most part, is fine here.

I can feel the need for more RAM when playing the newer Rainbow Six Siege & Halo 3 PC on LOWEST settings (Not so well optimized game apparently since 8GB is not enough).

I've done a lot of bottleneck chasing over the 9 years I've had this motherboard, and my upgrade cycle/experience says that the 8GB RAM is the bottleneck again.

CPU: Started with Core2Duo e8500, then went to q9550, now running Intel x5470
HDD: Started with 2 500gb 7200rpm Seagate Barracudas, now running 2 960gb Crucial m500 SSDs.
Ram: Started with DDR3 2x2gb Crucial 1333mhz ram, 7 years later added 2x2gb more ram not matched & that was problematic, now running DDR3 2x4gb gSkill 1866mhz zero issues
GPU: Started with GTX 260 892MB vRAM, upgraded to GTX 660ti 1.5GB vRAM, now running GTX 1060 6GB vRAM (792% faster than the original GTX 260 I got for this platform LOL).

Only thing that's unchanged in 9 years is obviously the Mobo & Power Supply.

At the moment the computer still runs like a dream except for the newer games mentioned that seems to run well at times, but will occasionally see "micro-stutter" when "outdoors" and the rendering requirements are momentarily raised. Exact same problem that was solved when I went from 4GB to 8GB of RAM with Fallout 4 about 2 years back, it made the game run consistently smoother and this was running 1920x1080 at the time (Been gaming 2560x1600 for about a year now).

I honestly don't think it's possible to achieve 60FPS @ 4K resolution with less than 16GB ram for today's games. Would love to be wrong about this though.

***Another user suggested that I buy a backup BIOS chip for my board to have on hand if I decide to try this & something goes wrong. If that's the case, then a $12 BIOS chip replacement is worth the risk to achieve 16GB of RAM***

@PCgamer911..Doesn't appear to be running out of system RAM but more might help, hard to say..What about VRAM usage ('Memory usage, MB' in Afterburner, and EVGA Precision)?..Running all that other stuff in the background won't help anything either.

Another really good utility to use for checking on things is AIDA64 Extreme (30-day trial, or pay)..You can set it up to log a lot of memory-related and other stuff.

Re:Using 4GB RAM modules on a 790i series board 2017/11/06 15:00:03 (permalink)
Hey Bob,

Thanks for recommending Aida64, great app. Yeah, I was having trouble getting the system to use more than 4004mb RAM and purposely included other apps to boost RAM usage to confirm both 4GB sticks were being utilized (I experienced no performance impact w/ those extra running apps).

GPU vRAM usage is maxed at 3230MB out of 6GB so no issue there.

My motherboard's model: EVGA 790i SLI FTW Digital PWM (E180)

Interestingly, AIDA64 reports my motherboard chipset simply as: nVidia nForce 790i SLI

I've read of people successfully cross-flashing XFX 790i Ultra p09 bios onto EVGA 780 & 790i boards. (And some had said XFX & EVGA 790i boards are the exact same thing just a different sticker makes me confident that this would work for here as well.)

More good news as I solved my micro-stutter problem in Halo 3 (vSync needs to be turned on, DOH!). And as for Rainbow Six Siege, the latest update to that game brings a glitch to certain CPUs causing it to constantly run at 100% even on newer Intel CPUs (Perfectly explains the micro-stutter as I never experienced that before the game's huge update).

So atm 8GB is still adequate for my needs, but will still pursue 16GB to further keep up with the newer machines.

Would be amazing to see a 12-year old platform running those newest games at 60FPS in the year 2020 ;^)

Re:Using 4GB RAM modules on a 790i series board 2017/11/06 15:41:46 (permalink)
@PCgamer911..People have gotten 16GB to run in a 790i, but it's hit/miss..The 790i is very picky about RAM.

The 790i doesn't like low(er) voltage RAM very much, the FTW that I had wouldn't even boot on Auto Memory Voltage with some OCZ stuff at it's SPD of 1.5V (2.0V spec)..Had to put in Patriot Vipers (the 1600MHz 7-7-7-20 green ones that are to kill for) to get into BIOS and manually set it then put the OCZ stuff back in.

Increasing Memory and SPP voltages a little is often neccessary along with manually setting the timings and Command Per Clock (CMD) to 2T and maybe enabling P1 and P2 and increasing tREF a little to get 16GB working..Can be a pain..Can also be futile.

You can search for some 790i 16GB success stories like here and here and here..If you flash to the XFX BIOS you'll lose VDoop Control, CPU PLL and probably a few other things..Don't know if I would do that..Well, yeah I would 'cause I have two other PCs and could reflash or recover from a bad flash via USB flash drive and the BIOS chip is replaceable and can still be found on eBay and other places and EVGA prolly even still has some tucked away somewhere you could buy from them if it's ever neccessary.

Good luck!

Add Dell XPS 730 to this list.  It is also a 790i system.  I was able to boot with three 4gb sticks and and 1 empty memory socket (I pulled my only 4gb  sticks out of a Rampage II gene).  Bios showed only 250mb of ram but Windows 10 recognized and used all 12gb.  According to a thread here
https://www.win-raid.com/t326f13-del-xps.html
the bios's for 790i from eVga, XFX, Zotac and HP Blackbird are all interchangeable.  Not sure about my XPS 730 and I would not want to try it.
