We have a new firmware update for the USB 3.0 controller. This update improves compatibility with the USB 3.0 devices, in particular issues related to the "power surge" error message. Link is below:

http://cdn.evga.com/driver...p_V0.41_VL810_0960.zip

Inside the .zip file you will find instructions for updating the firmware, one important step is that after installing the update software, you MUST reboot the PC before actually updating the firmware.

After the firmware update has been completed, please completely power down the PC. After the PC has been turned back on, if you go into the firwmare utility it should now read as V9.60:

After this entire process has been completed the firmware utility can be uninstalled.

Thanks for the detailed instruction. I just sucesesfully upgraded. Cant tell if it improves anything yet, cause the error does not always show up.

As far as I get it: It updates the software on the chip itself so it should stay that way.

Guyss... I sure wish I would have realized that you only support Microsoft before I bought this MB. :( You DO realize that Mickeysoft is not the only OS in the world right?

So since it is impossible for me to use MIckeysoft to install this firmware, have you made other plans to accomplish this? Does installing the .47 Bios update, also do this firmware?

I just swapped out the MB because it appears I had defective USB3... but after reading this, I wonder if it is just a firmware issue.

So I ran the update and got a USB Power Surge warning the moment the utility completed.

Hope that's the last time I see that warning.

So I ran the update Friday when it was posted, it worked well and installed. I plug my mouse back to USB 3 port to test it and it has been working well. No power surges, no trying to figure out what port works. Well it was all good until now, I am getting the power surge warnings again on USB 3 ports. the mouse is still working just fine.  I thought that was supposed to be fixed....

Same here, unfortunately. Worked fine yesterday, but today it's back to the Power Surge error. Happened about every 30 seconds for nearly two hours. Thing is.... there is NOTHING plugged into any of my 3.0 ports. I pulled all devices first thing yesterday before updating, and didn't plug anything back in after doing so. It's stopped for now, but.....

I am getting the Power Surge tonight again, about every 10 or so minutes or less.  Seems to be when I come back from hibernating the computer that it does this, the mouse I have plugged in is still working great, haven't had it go dead and switch ports yet (knock on wood) so that part may be fixed, the Power Surge though is not. Any response to that Jacob?

Got power surge twice this morning, so that means only two pop ups in about a week since update. Not that big of an issue in my case and hopefully for others it's lessened as well.

Is there any information for this Jacob or is it being investigated into why this would happen and a fix is being put into an update? I see you have been on the forums but you or anyone else at EVGA has responded to my question.

Have you given a USB Power Boost a try, also here is a good link about this issue:>
    http://www.ecnmag.com/articles/2009/12/circuit-protection-considerations-usb-30
What type of device are you plugging in
I was wondering what is really the error here, I am not using any USB 3.0 items yet I was getting this same popup. I have not gotten any popups after I updated the firmware.
My Bios will beep on B4 once in a while but other than that I have note see this issue popup.
I have a USB 3.0 cradle for SATA drives I use for backup and OS images. I will keep it plugged in for a while with an old drive in Both Slots to see if I can cause a new Popup.

This is my experience and guide with EVGA X79 FTW. YMMV

Bios leave Bluetooth option on so you don't lose 2 ports.
Install original Asmedia driver evga first provided version 1.63
Update Asmedia firmware to the one provided by JacobF
Update Via firmware to 0.96 / 0.97 beta

All items are available on EVGA.

Additionally you can use this software USDview to remove all the USB devices and reset them back to initial state.

Are you saying to leave them Enabled? or Disabled
I take it that on the X79 FTW what is why USB port 2 in the Bios is disabled as well?
By default I do disable the Bluetooth on any MB I have.

leave Bluetooth Enabled but don't install the drivers if you don't use it.
It takes away 2 USB 3.0 ports if you disable it, most of the surges occur when bluetooth is disabled for me.

Seems like this isn't read by EVGA but here is another post for them.  Today when I turned on my computer from a shut down from last night, all USB 3 ports are dead, mouse could not be used by any of them so I had to plug into USB 2 again. This "patch" has not seemed to work as it was stated.
And just as I type this, a power surge occurred.
EVGA someone there, please say if you are working on this issue, its getting bad how often I have to play the guess what ports work game and seeing these messages.

From most if not all vendors you should only use the USB 2.0 Ports for the KB and Mouse.
EVGA, ASUS, Dell, HP have told us this, Logitech has told us much the same on power on.
I have yet to found a KB or a Mouse this is USB 3.0

It is not just when it is plugged in when it is powered on, it happens when I try and change it from USB 2 to USB 3 after it has been on for sometime.  It is a power error that is causing it and EVGA needs to say if they can fix it or not. They did say this fix would take away the power messages that are the power surge errors but it has not. Since it has not, they need to say if they can fix it than say its fixed and go and then when it comes, they don't reply.  They need to reply with something, I would take at least a post saying they are looking into it and working on it, give us some hope.  Even when I was typing this the first time, I got a blue screen for a Driver Power State Failure, second time I have gotten this now and they need to fix it, it is a software thing they did, if not, they need to get the Dark out and give us a new board for little price and take the old one back.
File below is the picture of the screen.

I gave up on EVGA's X79 FTW and purchased another X79 board - an ASRock X79 extreme6. Guess what! All the USB3 ports JUST WORK, during boot for getting into the UEFI BIOS and after in windows. It's awesome! Oh, and no surge warnings. Wish I could just get a refund on the FTW, as it is useless.
