Honestly, I find it a bit sad that this is even an issue.

I recently acquired a GTX 1080 FTW Hybrid (upgraded from a Gigabyte GTX 980Ti XTREME GAMING) and I found it very loud, mainly because of the radiator fan which cannot go below 56% speed...
How is it possible that there's completely no control over it? Why isn't it running at lower RPM when idle?

I tried connecting the stock fan to a 4-pin header on my ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII HERO ALPHA motherboard and controlling it through ASUS AI Suite 3, but if anything it only made things worse because the fan wouldn't go below 60% no matter what I did - so the only real option for me to get a quieter Hybrid GPU is buying an aftermarket, static pressure-oriented fan to slap it on the radiator and then connect it to my motherboard.

I've got to admit that I'm a bit disappointed as this is my first EVGA card and I've heard a lot of good things about them in the past.

Yeah, It appears that EVGA wanted to use a cheaper fan and save a couple of cents that way. I like the hybrid, but it took some work and money to make it acceptably quiet.
The radiator fan is not controllable by PWM as it only has two wires, so that is why you are seeing high RPMs. I have tried a Noctua S12A (not rated as high static pressure) and it works OK at moderate loads, but I ended up using F12, which is a little louder, but pushes more air through.

First, I must say that this is a great guide for setting up controlled radiator fan though motherboard.
Second, thanks for pointing out native 1080 ti capability to control PWM fan. I have connected a good PWM fan to the connector, and now, I can control it with the GPU slider/curve in Precision.

To the right of this connector there are two more PWM connectors. One has both the pump and the radiator connected to, and the next one is connected to onboard fan. Thus, EVGA should have used one to control a PWM radiator fan, one for controlling PWM pump, and the last one for controlling the On-board fan. I am not sure why EVGA did not do this. I suppose, they want us to buy the full hydro, but it is a do-it-yourself setup, which is even more involved than changing a fan in the hybrid version.

The fan controller in Precision does not control the pwm fan. It's controlling the single fan that's actually on the card. You'll have to control the pwm fan through bios, speedfan, or some other fan control software provided by your motherboard manufacturer.

You are correct, but as Quad5N noted in one of the posts the card has a PWM connector, which is controlled by Precision. Sorry I am still not able to post pictures/links due to "new member" restrictions, but look at the picture inside the card (posted sometime earlier by Quad5N). At the left bottom corner you will notice the 4-pin connector. If a PWM fan is connected there, the Precision will control it as it supposed to. The connector is smaller than normal fan connectors, but I had an extra one, and I made an adapter that allowed me to connected a 4-pin PWM fan there. The mod does require removing the shroud and a spare connector.

Thanks, the mod would be very easy to do especially if someone could help identify the proper name/model# for the connectors.

Yeah that would be awesome to know. What I’d actually want to do myself is mod a 2 pin to 4 pin adapter and hook the pump up to it so I can put it at 90% to make it a little quieter. I do this with my cpu pump with pretty much no difference in performance. Curious if anyone else has done this.

Re: [Tutorial] Hybrid Cooler Radiator custom fan curve (with 0 RPM mode) - Text Only 2018/03/12 10:18:07 (permalink)
Yes, I have done this with my CPU (using Corsair), I think that as long as there is some water flow, the heat is transferred from the block to the radiator just fine, and reduced RPM does make a big difference in pump noise.
I have not taken my pump apart from the card, but it looks like a standard sized pump, similar to what is used in Corsair and other CPU coolers. I do not know if EVGA pump is PWM capable and they just "forgot" to connect the other two wires. It maybe also possible to connect EVGA pump through a voltage reducing/regulating adapter. A simple adapter like the one provided with Noctua fans could work just fine.
On the other hand, I wonder if it may be possible to control the pump with a motherboard even though there is no RPM sensing wire.

Looks like this adapter would work for connecting to the mini 4 pin headers on the card.

Yes, that should work, and I think this is a good alternative for those who want the fan connected to the card vs motherboard. Although connecting the fan to the motherboard does not require tools or the connector, I prefer to control all card features, including fans, from one place. I believe that EVGA's decision not to use PWM radiator fan and water pump is a big step backward.

I’m guessing it’s because the ftw3 is the only card that has a third header to be able to pull any of this off. They probably didn’t want to have another set of pumps and fans made with different connectors if they wouldn’t work on other cards. It’s probably a lot easier to keep a universal design. I’m willing to bet that if there are more three fan cards in the future they’ll start shipping hybrids with pwm radiator fans and pumps.

Re: [Tutorial] Hybrid Cooler Radiator custom fan curve (with 0 RPM mode) - Text Only 2018/03/15 15:00:57 (permalink)
I disagree with this logic, their CPU CLC has PWM fans. Besides, PWM fans will work as DC fans if only two wires are connected, which would provide compatibility if the extra header was not available. Even with 2 headers PWM fan would still work great. I just do not see how hard of a decision it could have been to use PWM fans. All wiring and connectors on the Hybrid are 4-pin anyway. This is like buying a million-dollar home with the cheapest Fans/AC. If they wanted to go lean and mean, why even include the fan, just let people install their own. The cover could have had an access door to connect the fan. As a customer, I would feel more respected if the fan was not included than having to deal with replacement. I still love my card, and I have bought another one for SLI, but the fan was replaced immediately.

For those who want to connect their fans to PWM header on the card, be careful opening the cover. It has many screws that are similar size/diameter, but have fine and coarse threads. If the card is new, use sticky protective film (removed from the card) to place screws in order, it would make it much easier to screw them back in:)

This was a great read ! I`ll file this under future projects to do

For those that want to control the radiator fan and pump from the Hybrid card(preferably a FTW3 Hybrid) you can use this guide to remove the shroud. Just start from the end of the guide and work your way back.

https://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/GTX_1080Ti_FTW3_Hybrid_manual.pdf

Here is a picture of the PCB of the FTW3. A FTW3 Hybrid should be identical.

This connector is for the pump.(Fan 2 Memory) Unplug the pump connector from here and plug it into this connector. Plug the other end of this connector into a fan header on your motherboard. I usually set the pump to 90% in the bios to minimize the pump noise.
https://www.moddiy.com/products/4%252dPin-PWM-Fan-Connector-%28Female%29-to-4%252dPin-Mini-GPU-Fan-Connector-%28Male%29.html

This connector is for the gpu radiator fan.(Fan 1 GPU) It is empty on a FTW3 Hybrid. Just plug this connector into the 4 pin header on the pcb and plug the other end into the radiator fan. You can control this fan with Precision or Afterburner based on gpu temperature.
https://www.moddiy.com/products/4%252dPin-PWM-Fan-Connector-%28Male%29-to-4%252dPin-Mini-GPU-Fan-Connector-%28Female%29.html

Honestly, these Hybrid card should have shipped this way from EVGA. Pump and rad fan control should be a given considering how much these cards cost.

been a user of Speedfan for years, always pleased with what this little software could achieve in the PCs I was building.

recently bought a FTW 1080 hybrid and decided to plug the Rad fan to my MB PWM header instead of the GPU as it is out of the box

my system went from barely noticeable fan noise at idle to quasi quiet with the fan running at 30%. its Japan summer now and the card sit at 37-38degC at idle and 55degC under heavy gaming

next mod I will try whenever I have time, wishful thinking...., will be the Rad in push-pull to see how low I can get the GPU temps going without adding too much noise to my system

I'm lost here, I would like to know what's wrong with the 1080Ti Hybrid's?....

I have no issues that I know of??. I have the G.P.M set with Fan Curve with EVGA's software and after reading this OP, I just noticed when I click on the (GPU. it reads 0 rpm), (Power. reads 1620 rpm) and the (Memory. reads 0 rpm) Yet the graph shows all are set and profile is saved...

I mostly play BF4 and I have no issues gaming, the highest my GPU get's is in the 40's Celsius and 25C to 19C lowest depending what I'm doing.

Unfortunately, on the Hybrids the only fan you can control is the Power fan. The Hybrid pump is connected to the Memory fan header on the gpu which you have no control over(no rpm reading). The GPU fan header is not even being used, so no obvious control there too(no rpm reading). Not much control at all but it works as intended.

Just a warning for those who might want to use SpeedFan on a gaming PC, BattlEye actively kills SpeedFan now. You can read more about the issue here:

So basically if you're planning to play any games with BattlEye anticheat, I would find a solution other than SpeedFan.

I would call that malware.

I'm assuming it's killing the executable, and because you said it won't work until the next reboot it is killing the system service too (...yup it is).  How is that ok?

Hopefully everyone checked the "Set fans to 100% on program exit" box.  I'll stick a link to your post on the first page.

Really? Why do you need a custom circuit when just about every motherboard has fan header controlled by CPU temp? I my case, the FTW-K has two. I run 4 Noctua 140mm on a H110i. Using a 4 wire PWM splitter cable they just plug in. ~380rpm at idle ramping up to 35% at 60C...basically inaudible and uses zero system resources.

There really needs to be some modern alternative to speed fan. FanControl works ok but I hate the super-modern ui.
