Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick sounded very positive about Google Stadia just one year ago, saying he was "pretty optimistic" about the service. Zelnick said "being able to play our games on any device whatsoever around the world, and to do it with low latency, well that's very compelling if that can be delivered," about the service in May 2019.

In a recent interview last week Zelnick has acknowledged the lackluster success of the platform saying "the launch of Stadia has been slow," and "I think there was some overpromising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result." Zelnick questioned the point of such a service when the games are selling for 60 USD+ and a console of similar performance without any of the drawbacks of an online service can be had for just 300 USD. It will be interesting to see the fate of the collection of game streaming services that have popped up over the last few years.

I personally agree with this assessment. I think Google Stadia has a long way to go yet.

Google love cancelling projects, this will be another one. And it's failure has nothing to do with the concept of streaming, it is the $60 a game, ones you never actually own. So, so dumb.

I found out something about this recently which helps explain Google's troubles with Stadia. Along with the licensing issues, and reliance on customers' internet, Google's servers run on Linux-based operating systems which has often required substantial effort by the game developer to port over to. Another nail in the coffin. That better explains why the game developer feels it is necessary to sell another copy (because they want to be compensated for their effort of porting the game over to Stadia).

Regardless of the reasons, what is super clear is that Google isn't paying the game developer enough money. Game developers shut up when they are paid. If Google's Stadia service was successful, Google could work it out with the game developers, Stadia customers wouldn't have to pay for the games, and the Stadia service would be profitable enough to cover its costs.

I think it was rolled out maybe five years before it was really ready. If internet speeds had that long to improve and Wireless 6 was wide spread in devices it probably would have worked a lot better. In a decade though it should work well for the majority of people in large cities. Of course that doesn't matter since by then Google will pull the plug.
