Personally, I am not a big fan of surveys myself, but as cokeman said, this is a rare chance to vent some major grievances many of us have expressed.  In the past Pande hasn't been the most receptive of those grievances, and if they hear it from us here, maybe we can get somewhere.

Very well said!

I have been in contact with Vickie Curtis and she responded that she is still working on the data collected. FAH is one of Three Projects she is working on and best case is we will get some results in December. One thing she did share was " F@H seems to be a predominantly male pass-time. Less than 2% of my respondents were women!" I will keep you posted when the findings are published and thank you to all that took time and did the survey.

Yes, the survey has been closed for quite some time now. Just wanted to give update to everyone on when to expect to see some results on the data collected.

Just got an e-mail on this with a link to the summary findings.  E-mail asked if I would be willing to complete a short follow-up survey.  When I can get the link, I'll post it up.

Its a shame that the survey was not able to get a true idea of how many men vs women fold.  All they said is that 2% of the respondents were women.  If there was a more true idea of the number of women, I would bet it would be easier to get breast cancer organizations to team up with PG to bring more users on board.  Those groups have EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE marketing apparatuses.

Its a shame that the survey was not able to get a true idea of how many men vs women fold.

I find it odd that some computers are considered women.

Re:Survey on why we fold 2014/03/24 07:05:57 (permalink)
Thanks everyone for filling out my survey.  I know it was quite lengthy and that some of you took a lot of time over it.  The feedback was fascinating, and hopefully I'll be able to add to the small amount of data on DC projects.

I was just looking back over this thread, and saw the comments about the women doing the survey.  I do realise that this 2% may not be representative of the Folding population as a whole, but it's really tricky to find any statistics on the overclocking / hardware enthusuast's community. There have been a few other studies looking at SETI, WCG and Docking at home, and they've also found from their surveys that there are many more men taking part (and some of these surveys have HUGE sample sizes - much larger than mine).  If anyone has any thoughts (or estimates) about the % of women taking part in Folding at Home I'd be really interested.

Thanks,
Vickie

Vickie, our Forum/Team-membership profile here does not track gender.  But having participated in our DC Forums going on 4 years, you could count the qty of identifiable women Folders on one hand (or less).  We have hundreds of people Folding on our Team (679 at the moment).  But only a small fraction of the members actually post here and get to know one another enough to know a person's gender.  I think that figure of 2% (and even less) could be representative of the female Folding population.  It is a rare occasion that we see a female participant that posts here and get's to know the team.
