ksivagn09 Hi everyone,
With this BETA bios release, I would like to know what my options are.
I have a brand new motherboard, Z790 KingPin.
I need to buy a CPU. Should I get 13900KF or 14900KF?
From other postings, it seems the beta bios only permits the 14th gen CPUs, but it seems to may be missing everything else that has happened since these CPUs were released.
So what should I do?
I already have the other components to build the system: RAM, NVME, PS, Case, AIO, GPU.
Thanks.
The beta BIOS should allow the 14900KF to be recognized, but it's unclear if any/all other functionality will be present. It will not have APO or latest micro-code, security updates, etc. The 13900KF should work fine, but it also won't have APO or the latest security patches. If you really want to run the EVGA board, I'd stick with 13th gen CPUs.
Thanks for the reply.
If the board supports 13th Gen, from their regular / latest non beta BIOS, how will it miss having the latest APO, or security patches on the 13th Gen CPU?
Is there a direct comparison to other board manufacturers BIOS to that of EVGA BIOS when it comes to APO and security patches?
(my post disappeared, so re-posting): No, there's no direct comparison, other than you can look at the features that were present at the last actual BIOS update, which was May 4th, 2023, and that was a beta version with specific fixes for memory. The last full feature-updating release was March 24th, 2023. So any security patches, micro-code updates, APO (which launched with 14th gen), etc. that came out after that have not been added to EVGA bios versions. The latest bios, according to EVGA support, only adds functional support of 14th gen CPUs (no additional bug fixes or features were added as far as they've announced). APO was originally launched for 14th gen and Intel have since added 13th gen support, but it requires a supported bios, which EVGA has not provided as far as I am aware. The Intel ME firmware is outdated. There's a known security bug that was updated late 2023 by other vendors that fixes some vulnerability with the splash screen logo usage (you can google that one for info). I think there are other security updates and possibly micro-code updates that other vendors have provided as well, but not EVGA. If you don't care about those features and security patches, then it'll run 13th gen just fine. I am currently running an EVGA z690 with 13900k for example and I have no issues. I don't have APO support (not sure what I'd gain from it as I don't play games they've specifically tested with it...I'd try it, but can't), I don't use ME, and I'm just hoping for the best on any security stuff (I turn off memory integrity and some of it anyway as it impacts performance lol). So it's really up to you and what you want from the motherboard.
Hi, thank you for your detailed explanation. It is very much appreciated. After much consideration, I am going to keep the EVGA Z790 Dark Kingpin with 13900KF (got the CPU for approx. $674 before taxes here in Canada, at Canada Computers, price matching with Amazon Canada). I am justifying saving money on getting a new motherboard, since I paid $865 at EVGA back in Jan 2023 for this board. I'll pair it with 2TB NVME SN850X from WD and 96GB DDR5 6800Mhz RAM from G.Skill and will be using 280mm AIO from Be Quiet! Silent Loop series. My GPU will be Strix 4090 OC. I'll undervolt the CPU, look at other settings as well. It'll be a bit while before I build. So we'll see.

Thank you, Any recommendations for the undervolt settings on this specific board? Any guide or link reference would be helpful. Also, do you recommend getting a contact frame for this board to use with 13900KF? Is it necessary?

I am not undervolting since I've been running on a full water loop with 2 x 360mm radiators - temperatures are not an issue on my build, and that's usually the only reason I undervolt. The exception is when I'm overclocking as high as I can and doing 3DMark runs - then I might tweak the voltage to keep it from crashing, but I don't keep it clocked high for daily usage. Generally I leave it on default. I currently have my rig disassembled though, and will be rebuilding it soon. I use the Thermal Grizzly contact frame, although ymmv on whether it's truly needed - seems to be a case by case basis. There are some users who have had no issues with the standard socket, and there's also the thought that the heatsink should counter much of the possible bowing caused by the standard socket mechanism (if it's an issue), however some users have found a significant improvement using the contact frame. You could test the existing mechanism first, or just go with the contact frame from the start and not have to worry about it (which is what I did). TLDR: I'd recommend the contact frame, even though you may not need it.

96gb of ram is way overkill if you're just gaming. I would recommend a 4tb nvme. I'm almost full with mine because all these games bustin over 100gb each.

Ha! I agree, but got a good deal on it, plus this board only has 2 DIMM slots, so might as well max it out.
I don't need tons of storage, 2 TB is more than enough for me, for now. We'll see in the future.

Worth noting, don't expect 8000+ MT/s with dual rank dimms Back to the topic at hand. The new beta (v117) bios seems to be working without issue for me on a 13900k/z790 Dark. No changes to my previous v115 bios settings were needed.

Just returned my 14900KS and went back to the 13900KS. Started to get unstable when trying to play certain games (Call of Duty MW3 kept BSODing my PC when trying to cache shaders). Happened with completely stock settings or with the wattage capped. Darn

Been using the beta bios v117 with 14900kf, no profile changes from 13900k with bios v115 were required, had no issues.

When will the Z790 DARK PCIEX4 recognition problem using the PCIE TO U2 adapter card be fixed? It is not recognized every time after restarting. There are already several versions

If you've tried the 'final beta' bios v117 and it's still an issue, it's likely never going to be fixed.

I sent an inquiry to customer support for an update on the Z790 BIOS for 14th gen CPUs. I actually received a beta BIOS dated 4/12/2024. Need to talk to tech support anyway since the scroll wheel on my Z20 mouse died . Will ask about BIOS file and let everyone Know.

Flybye Anyone been daring enough to try it on a Z690? Can we even have multiple versions installed?
With an external flashing tool, like CH341A, it should be possible to cross-flash. The question is if it'll even boot. I think it would be worth trying both the Z790 Classy and KP bioses on the Z690 Dark.

jason9755 If I had a 13th/14th I would limit PL1/PL2, processor core iccmax and undervolt.
I have the Z790 Classified with the latest Beta BIOS (1.13), and I know that setting the CPU cap will set the PL1 and PL2 limits. But I don't know what BIOS setting corresponds to the ICCMAX setting. If anyone has some suggestions on what to look for in the BIOS to set ICCMAX, please feel free to respond. TIA..

Intel issuing microcode updates for this in August apparently, but if EVGA doesn't issue a bios update for it (which they've made pretty clear they won't), then we're screwed, right? Just as well they're still under warranty for most of us - $800 is probably worth filing for in small claims court.

Just limiting voltage from EVGA BIOS default: 4096 W to Intel default spec is *only* partial solution.

good day guys, i could really use some help, i made an EVGA Tribute build with all EVGA parts and i also imported and bought a EVGA Z-790 dark kingpin motherboard to The Netherlands. i don't know much about the software/programming/overclocking side of it, but i just love the EVGA brand and what it used to stand for,.. it breaks my heart to hear that EVGA is stepping out of the business and dropping the support on their product. i really hope they will make a new bios update with the new micro code so i won't accidentally blow up my intel 13900-KS. it would be really nice to hear from EVGA if there will be a Bios update with the new microcode that intel will release somewhere in august. because if they won't, then maybe a lot of EVGA z-790 Users won't even know how to fix this problem. i don't know how to lower Voltages and stuff like that, i do know how to update bios and load the default's because i was running an OC-Preset made by Luumi for daily use. maybe the community will be able to step in and give some kind of tutorial on how set safe parameters in the bios menu for noob's like me to understand how to safe my CPU from dying. or maybe some screenshot of the bios menu on what to change or in the Eleet-X1 software. What would be consider'd a safe Voltage and what else do i need to pay attention to? please guy's could really use a hand with this my specs: Coolermaster HAF 700 Evo Case EVGA Z-790 Dark Kingpin motherboard EVGA CLC-X 360 AIO EVGA 1600+P Power Supply Intel 13900-KS Processor G-Skill Trident Z5 F5-8000J3848H16Gx2-TZ5RK Memory Asus ROG Strix RTX4090
