Sn8ke_iis So does this mean the Z490 Dark is not PCI 4.0 capable?
Correct - Z490 is not PCIe 4.0 capable, although I believe Z490 will still be compatible with the new CPU. PCIe 4.0 requires hardware which only a very few Z490 boards have.

I appreciate the effort, but neither of those articles covers any EVGA motherboards. If an EVGA employee or someone else has a link to a definitive answer that would be greatly appeciated. I would think the Z490 Dark with it's upgraded components would have covered what was necessary for PCIe 4.0 but only time will tell I suppose. Thanks, Sn8ke_iis

aka_STEVE_b Didn't Intel say their brand new socket would be out before end of 2021 ? So what is the point of these...? Obsolete before they hit the ground.... & definitely by the time the hardware hits consumers hands. You know because we are to believe there is a huge supply/ demand gap for gpu's, cpu's & boards that has existed as soon as new lineups were announced.
They may be "obsolete" but for certain people they are desirable. I have a 10-year-old rig so I desperately need a total upgrade. Every component is getting replaced (obviously). I am just getting back into gaming regularly after not doing so for the last 4-5 years. Unfortunately I waited and waited and waited for the "latest and greatest" components to come out (mainly the 30-series GPUs which is why I bought a 2070 Super as a stopgap last Feb and didn't spend $1,200 on a 2080 Ti) and suddenly NOTHING is attainable. It's infuriating! If the Z590 Dark and 11900K are actually going to be available at launch, I will probably buy both even though I intended to build an AMD rig (except GPU) this time around. It may sound ridiculous but not only am I too disgusted by the AMD fanboys to even want an AMD rig, I am also disgusted at that clown who works for AMD who got on Twitter and talked about how his company was going to "have a real product launch and not a paper launch like Nvidia had". What a scumbag...who even does that? Then they turn around and release their new processors and GPUs that literally have LESS STOCK than Nvidia did at launch! Really turned me off as far as buying AMD this time around (or possibly ever). I really don't even want the out-dated 11900K (it's especially annoying since I have been using a 6-core i7-980X since they first released and after having a 6 core CPU for ten years I don't even feel like I am really "upgrading" by getting an 8 core 11900K), but the new AMD processors are unobtainable as well! I'm going to build this new rig knowing that DDR5 and all that stuff is coming at the end of this year. Unfortunately, at this point I can't wait that long...I HAVE TO build a new rig soon. When the new sockets and new CPUs and DDR5 release at the end of this year I will simply relegate my 11900K/Z590 rig to backup duty. It'll be an expensive backup rig but oh well. We will just have to wait and see what availability is like for EVGA's Z590 Dark mobo. If I can get that mobo I will absolutely buy a 10850K and stick it in there until I can get an 11900K. One thing I will NOT do is buy EVGA's Z490 mobos which, IMO, unacceptably lack PCIe 4 compatibility. That is actually the reason I don't have a 10850K rig built right now. So I agree that it is ridiculous that Intel is releasing these products (Z590 and 11900K) when all-new 10nm stuff is SUPPOSEDLY coming in less than a year, but with all these shortages maybe Intel is going to get lucky. If they actually manufacture enough product and if the 11900K really does "take back the gaming crown", then I think they will sell better than most people think.

_7ucky_ Thank you for the detailed response. EVGA motherboards never really came up in discussions when I was looking for a board for my new build, but it seems extremely high end so it's just a bit curious that it was absent from the conversations I read. I get that it's probably a pretty niche product since they're most well-known for their GPUs, but still surprising nonetheless.
Hahaha, I also questioned the addition of RGB to a board called "Dark".
The mobo in my current gaming rig is an X58 SLI board from EVGA that I bought ALMOST TWELVE YEARS AGO! This PC has been powered on essentially 24/7/365 since the day I built it over a decade ago. I also had two EVGA Hydro Copper GTX 580s in this rig until February of last year when I replaced them with a single EVGA 2070 Super simply because the 580s were too old to even start up RDR2. That is why I ONLY buy EVGA GPUs and why their products are very much "high end" in my book. I don't think too many PC components would survive 24/7 use for 12 years straight including the first five to six years of use being HEAVY gaming. I've never had an EVGA product let me down (knocking on wood). Actually one of the main reasons I haven't built a new AMD gaming rig is because EVGA doesn't make AMD mobos. I've had such great experiences with EVGA mobos and GPUs over the years (I have purchased many of both for myself AND for friends and family members whose rigs I built for them) that I am super leery about buying a mobo from a company like ASUS or Gigabyte or MSI. The huge number of negative reviews for ASUS mobos in particular really scares me. Just based off of the reviews it seems like 1 in 4 ASUS mobos fail right out of the box. That is an exaggeration of course but still...there are TONS of negative reviews for those things where the buyer claims that they just randomly failed all of a sudden. After using an EVGA mobo (and two EVGA Hydro Copper GPUs) for over a decade maybe I just have unrealistic expectations of how long one is supposed to last!

Those articles list which Z490 motherboards are fully (or partially) PCIe 4.0. compliant, for lack of a better term. EVGA Z490 boards are not, that's why they are not mentioned in those articles. The point was to show you which Z490 boards are. I believe you will still be able to drop a 11900k in an EVGA Z490 board and it will work (with a BIOS update), but it will run as PCIe 3.0. Awesome! EVGA definitely makes great parts, my last build had an EVGA 680 SC and I could not have been more happy with that card the entire 8+ years I used it. It was the best, most reliable one I've ever had and what led me to come back to EVGA for this generation of GPUs. I'm also very new to overclocking which I hope to delve into this generation, so I settled on a mid-tier mobo to learn the ropes and then I may eventually move up to the high-end.

Next "new socket" is for processors with PCIe5 support... not everyone is going to want to go through that transition early in the life of Gen5.

I'd wager that the vast majority of Z490 boards layouts were done with Intel's routing guidelines. In those cases, the boards will support PCIe4 from the 11th generation Intel processors. 10th generation Intel processors do not have the additional 4 PCIe4 lanes that are intended for the NVMe drives, so the sole limitation of Z490 boards as I see it is that those NVMe drives will not have the four dedicated lanes run to them. That will be done on the Z590 boards. Just my $0.02, and YMMV...

This was brought up and asked from EVGA when Z490 launched. We got excuses about it being under NDA, and that they could not comment on it. We were even told that Intel was preparing a statement on the situation since other board partners were proudly stating their boards were PCIE 4.0 ready and will be fully compliant once Rocket Lake drops. That statement never came from Intel, and other board partners never retracted their advertisements. It was clear to me what was happening and it's the main reason I didn't go with EVGA for my board. Just looking at the board that the EVGA board lacks at least some of the hardware other boards have around the PCIE slots for 4.0. Just looking at that list, most other brands, even the cheap-o boards included the necessary hardware for PCIE 4.0. No need to upgrade to a Z590 board, you can just drop in an 11900K and get the upgrade. Who knows though, maybe they can include some functionality. I would wait for an official statement from EVGA, but I wouldn't hold my breathe just by looking at the board. https://i.redd.it/2yrnabcvodb61.jpg Looks like Asus is supporting PCIE 4.0 at minimum on the first PCIE 16x slot. The Extreme board I have has more 4.0 hardware for more features so I expect full compatibility.

Looks nice. Why no X570 motherboard? Anyways with Rocket Lake you get PCIe 4 for the GPU and one pcie M.2 but max of 8 cores. With AMD you could go up to 16 cores. I do not understand EVGA not supporting or having AMD motherboards and limiting buyer options. Also TRX40 or what ever AMD Zen 3 HEDT supports could give a super platform for multiple Nvidia RTX 3090 cards not only for gaming but productivity as in making games, videos, 3d etc. EVGA I would hope would support the super ultra high end for their users that could or need that.

I don't think it's an easy turn for them to make AMD based products. In my view, EVGA is one of the smaller PC component manufacturers (compared to ASUS, MSI, etc.) and they've hitched their wagon to Nvidia and Intel. Hopping on the AMD bandwagon would be a huge change for them and probably not one they can do quickly. I don't see them going to AMD now or in the near future.

Speak for yourselves but RGB is the only reason I'm dailying a 3090 Kingpin and considering a Z590 dark. I spend a lot of time on my computer's aesthetics and lighting and having a blackout/single-color only part is inexcusable for me. There is absolutely 0 harm to having RGB if it can be disabled and still look clean.

Anybody know how a top end GPU runs at PCIe 4.0 8x? If there was no bottlenecking that would free up the other PCIe 8x slot for storage, bifurcation, etc.

Look at every GPU review on Intel platforms. PCIE 3.0 x16=4.0 x8, so performance vs 4.0 x16 is negligible in most cases.

lol. Intel already said March for the 11900 release, not sure about other boards - I got the impression ASUS was going to be selling them earlier than that, but perhaps not...

Also really like how they matched the aesthetic with the 3090 Kingpin. This tops the Maximus XIII Extreme for me because of the design congruency alone. Awesome job, EVGA!

TMatzelle60 Will we have the same stock problem with the motherboards as we do the GPU?
Maybe, but considering how many other companies are putting out Z590 boards, hopefully the demand will be spread out somewhat. More likely it may be getting hold of a CPU that proves the bigger issue, because there's only one business churning those out.

I hope EVGA put out a manual for the Z590 Dark a week or two before the board is available so potential buyers can get a better idea of what they are considering buying... ^ THAT'S A NOT SO SUBTLE HINT RIGHT THERE EVGA I also would love to know if it has a header for a thermal sensor.

If Z490 is any indication, boards will be available in excess while CPUs will be nonexistent. The main tech production constraint right now is silicon, particularly difficult to manufacture parts like CPUs and GPUs. Motherboards are much easier to manufacture and the required parts are less supply constrained, so it's more an issue of proper supply/demand estimation rather than manufacturing difficulty. The X570 Dark Hero is the perfect example of this—ASUS simply underestimated demand, and as far as I can tell they're ramping up supply substantially to meet it—which still takes some time to equalize.

Main limitation on those is lack of GPU chip itself and the memory provided from Nvidia. For motherboards they should just have the normal manufacturing delays to be encountered these days. I hope it is not the case this time but the Z490 dark series was unavailable for a long time so it was almost entirely irrelevant when it was released.

I would venture to guess no, because EVGA has never had a full block, especially not a their “extreme overclocking” board.

Oy! Tough crowd here. I just spent an hour reading roadmaps on Intel's site. I am not going to quote it or speculate about it - too much aggressive contrarianism out there. I recommend anyone interested in the topics here go read it for themselves. Now, to pick a few nits... The concept of previous generations of boards and chipsets being "obsolete" as used here is nonsense. Have a look at Steam's hardware surveys sometime - and be amazed. Where I have choices, I almost always prefer an EVGA option. Sadly, EVGA's available option list is shrinking. I am over big towers with EATX motherboards. For the last while I have been using two of EVGA's last Micro ATX boards, the Z370 and X299. I have always preferred the Micro ATX form factor but l was recently bitten by the iTX small form factor bug. EVGA has not offered an iTX board since Z270. Sorry, H370 does not count. So in the last two months, I bought two Z490 iTX boards (MSI and Gigabyte). I wish there had been EVGA options. Truly.
