It's good to clean up the dust of PSU to keep it working safely and efficiently. I always clean up the dust of PSU every year.

You're completely fine, just used canned / compressed air or if you have one of those machines that I forgot the name of, you can use them; I think they are called air compressors but yeah. As long as you don't disassemble the power supply (and risk shocking yourself) you are fine. Never open the Power Supply though, just mentioning that out because that will void the warranty and once again, you risk shocking, seriously hurting or killing yourself from it.

Dust that boi. You don't want it to get hot, and have your fans ramp up to an obnoxious level.

I used an air compressor for refilling my car's tires to dust out an old 700W PSU. I got a $10 PSU Tester later on to test my PSU after re-installing it, and it passed all the voltage tests.

Blow it out with a can of compressed air.  Do not use a vacuum, unless you have a computer safe ESD resistant vac.  Air compressors aren't a good option either (moisture, and maybe ESD are a risk here).

TLDR, blow it out with a can of compressed air made for the job, and you'll be fine

You can blow it out but make sure to use a screwdriver to hold the fan still while you blow.  You don't want whatever blower you use to spin the fan, can burn out the bearings.  I use my air compressor to blow out my box a few times a year but always use a screwdrivers to hold the fans while blowing.

Yes, clean it, please. Just don't use a vacuum cleaner. Get suppressed air can and blow it out.

Using an air compressor for years, never let me down, just not using it max. setting or very near. For dust build up on fans I use ear cleaning sticks with rubbing alcohol.

Yup it is recommended to clean it, try to use an air blower, do not disassembly your PSU and dont forget to secure the fan (spinning with the blower can damage the fan)

A good practice not only for your PSU but your entire PC. Just unplug it and definitely don't dissemble the PSU!

i can share my cleaning experience with you, since i've opened up quite a few PSU in my past (not disassembly btw)
don't blow thru the intake since u might burn out the fan's bearing when the pressure from the can might be too strong
hold your can atleast 1 to 1.5 feet away from PSU, too close is a bad idea

tbh, u should see if your PSU accumulated alot of dust or not when u open it up, EVGA psu should last a long time

Get a electric duster, they are great. I usually dust off everything every few months.

Re: Should I dust out my PSU? 2021/06/19 05:25:45 (permalink)
I dust, but very carefully, the voltage of the capacitors inside the power supply can be dangerous as indicated on the label. It is no joke and has to be respected.
What I do is usually disconnect, flip the switch on let it drain for several hours, and then use a vacuum to clean as much as possible from outside, I never disassemble. But again please be very careful or if not confident working with it take it to a tech, a good one would be able to sort this out for you likely free of charge to win your future business. All the best and stay safe.
