I installed the CLC 280 on an i7-8700k (for my older brother). The CPU is not overclocked. All BIOS settings were reset before testing. The temps are jumping around like crazy on idle (between 45 and 65) and on full load with Prime95, it's hitting 70-80c with the coolant temp only at 35-39c. The motherboard is a ASUS Prime Z370-A. I have the 2 fan cables plugged into the splitter on the pump and the pump plugged into the AIO_PUMP socket on the motherboard. I also tried plugging in the pump to the CPU_FAN port, but got even worse temps (95c on load). The USB cable is plugged into the header. Should I try plugging in the fans to the CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT (CPU Optional Fan)? I'm about out of ideas.

The motherboard's AIO_PUMP header will operate as a PWM header by default or can be changed to a DC header in the QFan Control section of the BIOS..Make sure it's set to default settings in the BIOS..Clearing CMOS would set everything back to default settings.

The ASUS Fan Xpert software (if installed) also controls the AIO_PUMP and other headers and may have an 'Auto-Fan Stop' setting which would turn off the header below a certain temp..Fan Xpert will override what's set in the BIOS QFan Control.

Sounds like maybe a possible software conflict between Fan Xpert and EVGA Flow Control software or incorrect QFan Control settings in the BIOS and the CLC pump rpm may be being throttled and causing the temp to vary so much.

It may be possible to set Fan Xpert to ignore the AIO_PUMP header, or set the header to 100% and see if it matters.

Uninstalling Fan Xpert through AI Suite and just use the Flow Control software might be something to try too..I would do that, myself, you can always reinstall it.

Without having an EVGA CLC cooler/software or the newer AI Suite or that motherboard here I can't tell you exactly what to do, just give you some info and point you in the general direction..Good luck.

EDIT: Just to add that if you want to totally uninstall AI Suite 3 and all it's components for troubleshooting purposes (which might be a good idea), you should run the handy-dandy AI Suite 3 Cleaner after uninstall to stop and remove it's leftover Services in Windows.

I would remove AI Suite 3 completely. Asus published a note saying that it doesn't work well with the latest bios and Windows patches released to fix the meltdown/spectre mess, so they recommend you remove it for now.
An updated version of AI Suite 3 is being worked on.

It is recommended to run Any MB fan header @ 100%, do not us smart fan or other BIOS/ software control for the CLC as conflicts are known to happen

Looking at the EVGA flow software running... Same setup i7 8700K and CLC 280
    At idle....
I'm seeing 31.0 C CPU temp, 32.1 C Coolant temp, 2910 RPM pump speed, and 1260 RPM fan speed (auto).
    running cinebench
I'm seeing 53C CPU temp,  32.7 C Coolant temp,  2940 RPM pump speed, and  1320 RPM fan speed (auto).

what are your numbers?... would like to know your pump speeds and what are your temps with the max fan speed of 2400 RPM.

I would wonder if it might be the header on the motherboard you are using. Really would be odd to be that much of a difference between the CPU and the cooler.

i turned on clc fan to 100% in flow control and ran 3dmark firestrike.  temps during testing were 35-36, then on the harder ones 45-46.
