How is the future of mining looking on these RTX GPUs?
Asking for a friend.
mining: 2080 is -10 to +10% the performance of a 1080ti depending on the mining algo. Anything that prefers higher memory clocks has the gains with DDR6 as you'd expect, algos that don't rely on GPU mem speed are the ones sitting 10% below the 1080ti. So considering the lower TDP on the 2080 this is an improvement, but for the cost concern... you'd not buy these for mining with profitability as extremely low as it is atm. coil whine: I actually get worse coil whine in games/applications than mining with the 2080 since mining algos rarely push it to the max core clocks and this whine comes into full force based on clock speed rather than gpu use %. Adjusting the core clock up and down makes no difference, the whine kicks in when anything pushes it to the max clocks at whatever range it's capable of running in at whatever power limit. Tried the ATI tool in this thread, screams like a banshee. I haven't heard coil whine this loud since the GTX 200 series years ago.

I had some savage coil whine on my 1080 Ti FTW3.
It lessened over time but it seems replacing my 11 year old APC UPS got rid of the remaining coil whine.

Yup, same exact sound coming from my XC Ultra 2080. Though aside from atitool, nothing else I've tried has made the card sound anything remotely close to this. Regardless, I'll try running atitool overnight and see if it makes any difference.

No way... My 1080Ti black edition "founders PCB" had a slight hum noise at certain RPMs after a while it went silent. What you have is some faulty fans or something else causing this awful noise.

I wasn't playing interference. Did you contact EVGA or create a support ticket to start your video card RMA process when I provided you those links 2 days ago?

Different PCB, talking about the 2080 here. However I concur, I owned several 1080tis when I did cryptocurrency mining last year and none of them had any notable level of coil whine. tinlunchbox

Yeah, ATI tool is definitely the loudest, I'm getting pretty annoying levels in games when under heavy load/clocks too though. Had a 1070 in this system before the 2080 and the 1070 had zero coil whine, so upgrading to the 2080 has been bitter. EVGATech_AdamB

There’s nothing to figure out. If yours is as bad as the that video, contact EVGA. Otherwise the vast majority of cards are going to have some level of whine though typically it shouldn’t be until the card is on load. Mine has some but it’s not bad and I don’t hear it anyway playing with noise cancelling headphones. Some will quieten down over time, others may not but ultimately it’s just the nature of the technology.

Fixes for coil whine...
#1 Put glue on the noisy coils. Only works if coils are exposed. Will void warranty if done.
#2 Run ati tool overnight to burn the card in. Click show 3d view to start ati render test.
#3 Increase/decrease voltage on the card.
#4 Use frame rate limiter software to limit fps in game to reduce whine.
#5 Try a different psu.
#6 Try a different motherboard.
#7 RMA the card.

I’ve never heard of switching PSU or mobo fixing coil whine. Is that a thing? I could maybe see technically how an older psu might have some power delivery issues but what technically about a motherboard would contribute to coil whine? Power from PCI-E?

Just to make 100% sure it wasn't something else I did a full system swap since I had the parts lying around (different motherboard and PSU) and the coil whine remained on the GPU as it was before. I have owned motherboards in the past that have their own coil whine which is why the mobo swap recommendation is there but it's pretty easy to tell when you have motherboard coil whine as that is either constant or makes noise under CPU load. Whereas GPU whine follows the GPU load exclusively.

Your house's electrical wiring, your outlet, your power conditioner/UPS (or lack of), and your PSU can all contribute to video card coil whine. The motherboard itself is unlikely to cause video card coil whine. But, the motherboard itself can have coil whine which you may confuse for video card coil whine. Also, the PSU itself can have coil whine which you may confuse for video card coil whine. Even a power conditioner/UPS can have coil whine. So, really, when making a broad recommendation, you have to mention all of the above as either possible sources of coil whine or possible causes of video card coil whine. For example, when the video card is under load, since it is such a high load, it may cause your PSU to whine, and therefore it might seem like it is the video card which is whining, since it is directly related to video card load, when actually it is the PSU which is the source of the whine. Alternatively, it may be the video card itself which is the source of the whining, but high ripple output from the PSU may be causing a harmonic which causes the video card to whine. Sometimes, replacing the PSU causes the coil whine to diminish or no longer be perceptible.

Every electronic device has coil whine.
In most cases it should not be very audible. In some cases when it is audible then the steps presented earlier in this thread can reduce the noise level or the noise can reduce overtime on it's own. A combination of hardware can cause the noise to be more audible than another combination of hardware so replacing one component may not do anything.
If you believe you have coil whine that is not going to fix itself or is audible from 3 feet (1 meter) away then contact us with a link to a recording of the noise so that we can further assist.

The 2080ti FTW3 screams equally as bad as the 2080 XC (perhaps a bit louder). I ran Heaven 4.0 benchmark as the test this time and the coil whine can be heard *clearly* from the opposite corner of the room (15 feet away).
Next step is to contact EVGA, but if this is the norm with Nvidia's new chip design... I can't imagine RMA will solve anything.

On the 2080 sytem (upgraded from coil-whine-free EVGA 1070) I had a Seasonic SS-520GM and swapped it for a SSR-750FM which made no difference. On the 2080ti (upgraded from coil-whine-free EVGA 1080ti) system it's my sig rig with the EVGA 1200 P2. I can handle a little bit of coil whine, as JeffP said above all components have a level of it, on any normal device I can't here it beyond 1-2 feet just as he said and that's only when I'm intentionally listening for it from those distances. But here we're talking about coil-whine that can be heard 15 feet away running open-air systems.

Give it a week or less to see if it goes away and rma it. Dont wait past 30 days as then your get a refurbished card and not new replacement.

I have some sick coil whine as well, i am going to return the card to the dealer i think..(60 days open return) i doubt this can be fixed by a burn in.  Only thing i have not changed is the motherboard, last try i had was with a new PSU (Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W PSU) and that did not solve the coil whine. I'll try and record footage of my 2080ti, it puts all of these to shame even being under water and temps in checked. Loudest coil whine I've ever heard. Tried bedding it in with Furmark, ati tool, & valley/heaven benchmark loops. Both not oc'd and oc'd using a Corsair AX860 with two seperate pcie cables. Never had any issues with four other gpus in the past with this psu and it's only two years old. Before someone says the psu is at fault keep in mind the AX860 was made by Seasonic and rebadged Corsair. I believe the AX860i was Corsairs own attempt. The coil wine with these cards has nothing to do with psu's it's strictly nvidia because both ref and aib cards are both experiencing it so I won't blame EVGA for it.

LoL, it's the same thing every time a new card comesw out.
Fixes for coil whine...
#7 RMA the card.
Nothing else will help. Any other suggestions are BS.
Keep in mind that you might have to RMA it 6 or 7 times before you get one without it.

Hi. I have a 2080 Ti Founders Edition. The first day runing stock cooler i dident even notice it really? But day after rebuild to liquid cooling and then overclock its actually very significant... I have never had a gfx card with that much electrical noise.. I think it is at least if not louder than the youtube videos.. Runing af benchmark the card screams with coil noise..even with games.. actually i am a little concerned if it will kill the card? is it normal? Please notice runing stock clocks and volts is exactly the same.. I have a HMX 1000 Watt psu Corsair I also wanna know is it ok? anyone else experience it? And why is this happening? And why does some not make noise and others do, if same components? There has been HUGE delays manufacturing and delivering 2080 ti´s especially in europe.. maybe thats why???

Hi. I have a 2080 Ti Founders Edition.
The first day runing stock cooler i dident even notice it really?
But day after rebuild to liquid cooling and then overclock its actually very significant... I have never had a gfx card with that much electrical noise.. I think it is at least if not louder than the youtube videos..
Runing af benchmark the card screams with coil noise..even with games.. actually i am a little concerned if it will kill the card? is it normal? Please notice runing stock clocks and volts is exactly the same..

I have a founders card as well and experienced the exact same thing as you. Never noticed it with the air cooler on it while I was benchmarking. The second I watercooled it though it's by far the loudest I've ever heard. It was too the point that even with headphones on I could still hear it. I will say this though I have been gaming on it alot and running furmark on and off and it has got a lot better since day 1. My card is at +200 core and +800mem and it still going good. If it does fail it'll get RMAed so no worries. Just be sure to reassemble it just like you got it. Run the thing till it dies (if it does) and enjoy your new card.
