Man, tough luck with the block.  At least you were able to find an HC block for it.  Even on air those clocks are very nice.  Shucks, even at stock clocks 3 of those 470s will spank most games out now and in the near future.

It'll be quiet and cool once you get them back on liquid.  I'm a bit pissed at myself for not doing the same thing.  I should have kept the 470s and just added another one like you and I'd have saved a bundle and be happy with it.  Not that I'm crying with the 480s or anything, but I really did love those 470s for the price/performance arena.

I think we are in the same ball park with the 580.  Those cards will have to really be awesome for me to go for it.  The only way I'd do it is if I can step-up for very low cash at this point.

Can't wait to see your three 470s in the loop.  I'm very interested in what kind of temps your get.

Thank man

I am looking forward to this loop info as well. While I have proven that done right, one RAD will cool four components.  Even when running the 4.0 on the CPU and the higher 783 clocks on the two cards the tems never went over 50c... Check it out...

The second pic is from me setting the Precision to auto... I stopped the run and switched to 95% fan after that... Good God that was not what I like to see...

At least it looks like the tubing from the rad connected to the outlet of the waterblock.

Oooooooooh... I see. Well early on in this build I noted that I have the flow of water starting at the bottom GPU and working it's way up. The CPU is the last item in this loop, so that connection to the RAD is the outlet .

I tried both ways, for hose use, cleanliness and temp performance I found this to be the solution best fitting my needs....

Thanks fellas

Ok.. I have received enough emails and PM's on this subject making me want to just post them here instead of more PM's...

Below are pics to what I set every single one of my 920's to with 1866 RAM in them. Only difference with 1600 RAM is I use the 1067 2:08 setting instad of the 1333 2:10 as seen below.

Couple of things....
  • YMMV. PERIOD!
  • These are what I found to get every single one of the 920 x58 builds I have ever done to fire up from the beginning and be Intel Burn, Prime and OCCT stable.
  • I do not in anyway suggest that anyone should use these voltage settings. Frankly they are a tad high an many places and each CPU ends up different than another. But they work for me.
  • I also use these settings as my base, then use Elete for the Heavy Overclocking when benching.

So here we go....

Awesome build!  Award winning for sure.  Interesting voltage you have on that NB.  Good thing its water cooled.  I think mine would melt down at 1.5 on air.  If I had known that block was a part of this build I would have sent it next day air.  I should venture out of the 400 series section more often. lol

MOBO: X58 E760 Classy | CPU: i7 980X | GPUs: 3xGTX 470 Tri SLI w/Koolance blocks | MEM: Dominator GT 2000mhz | PSU's: Corsair TX950w, CoolerMaster Silent Pro 1000w | OS: Win 7 Pro

Yeah... I did ask for it to be mailed Priority, but did not hear back. I am happy either way... It will get here in due time  I am just stoked you had one!! lol...  V's are my starting point.. The NB V's is mainly for the nf200's.. I run @ 1.25 ish most of the time in TRI... But I find if I run the V's the MOBO wants, I have far less issues. So I go one step at a time...

Wow!  I'm loving this thread.  Very well done AB.   I look forward to more pictures when the other block gets on.  Even the temps on air are not that outragious IMO.  3 x 470s at 95% fan speed...now that's outragious...LOL.

Re:Project "Cuz I wanna" 2010/11/11 15:53:30 (permalink)
Ok.. I have achieved what I set out to do... The highest temps I have gotten out of this system so far under the heaviest load I can crank is 72c.

In game I have not yet gotten to 62c on any card or the CPU in Crysis, or Metro 2033...

In fact the hottest I have seen now with three blocks on water is 47c and 57c on the CPU in both games...

Now when folding I peak @ 50c on the last GPU in the loop... Not sure why...

First pic, in red is the GPU's under load (4x number is degrees, 9x Number is the usage) folding and the CPU Working a program and partial folding as well, is the red box white letter 57c temp...

Anyway... Goal accomplished... Done right... Triple GPU's Vreg and an i7 920 CPU in one loop can be done on a single pump and 360 RAD... ***Happy dance***

Looks like heavy meetings all week long. Very nice.

One question remains. 580's in near future?

No not for this build. Remember one of the goals for this build was Cost and performance biased off of MSRP. And originally it was only two 470's.. And I have may more pics coming as it is TRI SLI and I haveoredered pretty white cords for the GPU's and the 24 pin power connector.

And to be totally honest. I am skipping the 580's all together. While they are great cards and are far more impressive than most thought they would be... I am quite happy with running SLI or TRI SLI on the second in line GPU because I feel the bang for my dollar hold true longer. And right now not one game on the planet brings this system to it's knees. Heck... It does not even sweat.

Last night I was never under 96fps or 75% usage while playing Black Ops... And OMG Does this system show the weaknesses/areas needing improvement in the Crytek engine used in Crysis. Not to mention areas that Nvidia could improve on. This system chews up and spits out Crysis like it was Counter Strike.... lol

And I am so bloody happy that I took a chance and went waaaaaaaaaaaaaay outside what is considered the "Norm" by doing the single loop. When I did my original figures, TRI SLI was never an option or even considered. Thankfully because I over do things there was just enough room left over to allow for the third GPU for any gaming stresses I desired. Proof in that is the photos, and the fact that Folding is one of the most stressful jobs a GPU and CPU can go through. With the temps staying where they are this system is nice and quite and yet in the middle of the road for temp comfort.

Ambient temps in this room are 74f and the system idles @ 32-34c.

I did single loop with quad SLI 295, i7-920, E759 and MB block with one pump on xspc 360 radiator and it works fine. Either for benching or everyday use. You just have to think it through when bulding it and in most cases it will work. You have proven even more because of tri-SLI adds more heat to the loop. I am sure you remeber my Red coper classified build from last year.

Very good stuff w/ the 3 way 470's there. I thought long and hard and decided I wouldn't be adding a 3rd 470 to my system. I just don't think I need it. Everything I have thrown @ it (of course sans Metro 2033. . .) it handles just fine.

So, I instead opted to snag a Killer 2100 NIC to fill my board up with. xFi, GTX 470 x2, and now my Killer 2100 NIC makes for a full board for me :P

Thanks AB for this awesome thread, thanks for all the results cuz I am planning a single loop too so this is great. I have seen all your systems very, very nice. Are you using distilled and PT nuke for coolant? I may go tri 470 after seeing this now, do you think it's worth it for gaming and is it maxing that PSU with the OC? Thanks.

@DMI Nice build, so you are the one that used copper pipe. I want to do that, but am trying to figure out the best way to terminate the pipe for the hose fittings. Copper caps seem thin to tape into. What did you do? Please PM if you like

Oh yeah man... One of my favorite builds that you did! I do realize a few folks have done this, but that was kind of the point. Only a few. Most do not. And I am not sure, but I have not yet come across another GTX 470 TRI SLI system with all of this in the same loop on a 360 yet. I am certain there has to be a few out there. Either way it was against the grain of most.. lol

Thanks man! Sound sweet! If you are running a single monitor I bet you are getting better performance than I am. Having three monitors really sucks the power. I have even hit a wall once in a while with the RAM. This is why I know in my heart at some point I will upgrade this next year to a larger RAM'd set of cards...

Thanks.. I used to build about 8 systems a year... That is not happening anymore, so that gives me time to think them through first.... lol...

Yes.. All of my liquid cooled systems only run Distilled and PT-Nuke. I refuse to run anything else. And without a doubt the 470's are worth it for gaming. If the 460's could have gone TRI SLI they would be in here.

It is simple mathematics. $399 for a 470 vs $650 for a 480 (Pricing at the time I was researching)... For 20% ish performance gain that is going to cost me $250 per card? Not for gamers. That is $12.50 per % gained? Meh...

Now that the prices have finally dropped, it is harder to decide. And then you have to add the power usage/needs. Then it is once again easier to decide. Back to the 470's.

Now If I was beginning to build this today... I would be in the EVGA Market Place... Snatching up two 480's for the $300-$340 they are going for each. Run those through the holidays... And this next set of cards that will be introduced would be my target. I would then sell the 480's and get the 470 replacements. Unless they of course widen the offering like say the 460 replacements can go TRI SLI... Then I may go that route.

If I was Nvidia... I would do this...
  • Top card... 2.25G-2.5G of RAM
  • Next card... 2.0G of RAM
  • Next Card... 1.5G ish of RAM
  • Bottom Card(s)... The 1.3G ish RAM
As far as maxing my PSU... Good Lord no. That was one of my considerations for this build. I have yet to see me use anything over 750.  It helps having half the fans and only one pump compared to my other builds. Would I buy a 850w PSU to run in this system? No. It only take small spikes to cause reboots or crashes... And for the few extra $$'s it is not worth the risk. That and I have had such good performance from the 1000HX that it is hard to not use it. I wanted the 1200 offering form Corsair, but could not bring myself to spend the extra $$ knowing the HX1000w is actually a 1200w unit, and the needs of the build would not max it out. Again, all about the performance/cost factor.

Did not mean to derail you thread with previous post AB. Sorry.

But I would like to make suggestion that might work great for you. PWM Fans. EVGA has best working PWM control and so I use it to my advantage . Keeps me sane while not gaming and they ramp up while gaming with out any controllers.
