I know there are a few musicians here in the forums, so I thought I'd start this thread since I am just getting into working on guitars. I purchased this used cheap guitar as a platform to upgrade and learn how to do fretwork. My plan is to transform this "beginners" guitar into a player grade monster on a budget. So here's what I've got so far, and the progress I've already made.

Guitar is a Donner DST-100R that I picked up used at Guitar Center for $89.  I have on order a set of Wilkinson EZLock tuners, and a used set of Fender Player Series pickups.

As you can see by the photos, I have shielded the pickup cavity. I also plan to shield the underside of the pickguard, replace all the electronics with quality parts and rewire the entire thing.

No, I didn't think to record it, but I still could since I have not done disabled the pick guard and rewired it yet.

Last night I finished working on the neck. I removed the Donner logo, ever so slightly reshaped the headstock (I think for the better), installed the Wilkinson EZ Lok tuners and Fender roller string trees, and then leveled, crowned, and polished the frets. See how shiny those frets are?

Just finished wiring everything last night, but I'm having a really weird problem. I've got signal from all pickups, and the switch is working properly, but the volume pot is not reducing the signal into the amp despite when I measure with my multimeter I get the full resistance of the pickup with volume wide open, and infinite resistance when the volume is all the way off.

This might sound super lowbrow; I am just speculating with no real knowledge of this field.
Measure the resistance at the guitar cable on the end that plugs into the amp - if nothing else - to see if it yields a different result.

Now I've got another issue with the wiring. Depending on how I have the middle pickup wires, either position 2 or 4 is out of phase and sounds incredibly thin and harsh sounding. Plus, I'm having a hard time getting the string slot height in the nut correct. It pulls out of tune on open chords. More work to do.

Re: Project guitar build thread. 2021/02/19 06:23:27 (permalink)
So, I figured out the issue with the string slot height. It really wasn't the string slots. The nut slot was not cut perfectly flat, so the nut was not resting on the flat bottom, instead the slot narrowed from top to bottom causing the nut to be wedged slightly above the flat surface. Also, the bottom was not completely flat, so I had to file that down a bit.

Still fighting with that Bridge/Middle position wiring. I've tried reversing the wiring on the middle pickup and that fixed the bridge/middle position, but caused the neck/middle to sound bad so I put it back the way it was. I then tried reversing the wiring on the humbucker, but that had the same issue as before. There are a ton of wiring diagrams on the internet, so I'm going to try a few more to see if I can find a sound I like.

Looks nice. Not really a "build" persay, but I've been meaning to upgrade the pickups in a 1989 Made in USA Squire Strat for a long time. Ended up getting it for free back in '04 from some random dude.

What radius is the fretboard? I was gonna ask maybe the nut or bridge isn't matching the rest of the neck radius

The fretboard has a 12" radius.

I got the wiring figured out. I changed to a different Wiring plan that doesn't split the humbucker in the 4th position. I'm using a wiring from Seymour Duncan. I'm pretty well finished except the nut. I cut it way too low and the high E was fretting out on the first fret. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to just get another blank and recut it, or find a precut that is tall enough to fit the nut slot.

Good stuff, and yeah wiring is always my least favorite part of any build, be it PC or guitar

I'm redoing a guitar of mine too as coincidence would have it. This was a old BC Rich Warlock Platinum that I got over 20 years ago back when I was still playing in a band. This thing was used and abused but I still love it, the way it sounds and plays. But I recently stripped it down and am redoing the paint and upgrading the hardware.

It's the guitar on the bottom in this pic that I'm redoing.

I'm going for a cosmic look with it, but more just kinda abstract.

@Tweaked: You wanna really make that cheap guitar sing.....buy a new neck for a neck-thru design!   Maybe even add a new rare wood layer to the whole body too.
@Crap: I like it! Very cool look and it really makes you want to look at it. That should look pretty good in the end once its sealed and buffed.

@Tweaked: You wanna really make that cheap guitar sing.....buy a new neck for a neck-thru design!   Maybe even add a new rare wood layer to the whole body too.

lol buying a neck-thru would mean a whole new guitar since his is a bolt-on
