So basically I've been tinkering with an overclock in my system, its my first PC build and the specs are in my sig. I have my i7 clocked to 3.6GHz, a modest overclock but I don't want to push things higher yet because I want a rock solid OC first. Its been pretty stable, I've put in hours upon hours of gaming with the OCed settings over the last few days (just got my wisdom teeth out so I have time lol) and have run into no issues whatsoever. No freezes, no BSODs, nothing. My buddy recommended I run prime95 just to be sure. I ran the small FFT test with no errors after an hour. The large FFT test ran for an hour and got no errors too. I decided to run the large FFT test once more just to make sure, and one of the cores failed after 5 minutes. I was using Firefox and Trillian in the background when the second large FFT test was running, would that make a difference? So i'm not exactly sure how to proceed from here. Pics are below if you guys wanna take a look at my settings, any suggestions would be great.

Heres the specs as requested. Mother Board ( EVGA X58 FTW3 ) Drivers ( latest i think ) Bios ( 74 ) CPU ( core i7 940 ) CPU Cooler ( prolimatech megahalems rev B ) Memory ( 2GBx3 OCZ Platinum OZC3P1600L DDR3 1600 7-7-7-24 ) PSU ( Corsair HX650W ) GPU ( Radeon HD 5870 ) Drivers ( 10.8 ) Operating System ( Windows 7 64 business ) Frequency Control CPU Clock Ratio ( 18X ) CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ( 200 ) MCH Strap ( Auto ) CPU Uncore Frequency (Mhz) ( 3205Mhz { 16X } ) CPU Clock Skew ( 0 ps ) Spread Spectrum ( Disabled ) PCIE Frequency (Mhz) ( 100 ) OC Recovery Disabled Memory Feature Memory Speed ( Standard ) Memory Control Setting ( Enabled ) Memory Frequency ( 1067Mhz / 2:8 ) Target Memory Frequency is 1602 Channel Interleave Setting ( 6 Way ) Rank Interleave Setting ( 4 Way ) Memory Low Gap ( Auto ) tCL Setting ( 7 ) tRCD Setting ( 7 ) tRP Setting ( 7 ) tRAS Setting ( 20 ) tRFC Setting ( 74 ) Command Rate ( 1t ) tRL ( +0) Voltage Control EVGA VDroop Control ( Without VDroop ) CPU VCore ( 1.225 ) CPU VTT Voltage ( +100mV) CPU PLL VCore ( 1.800V ) **IOH VCore ( 1.150V ) DIMM Voltage ( 1.65 ) DIMM DQ Vref ( +0mV ) QPI PLL VCore ( 1.15 ) IOH VCore (1.150V ) IOH/ICH I/O Voltage ( 1.550V ) ICH VCore ( 1.100V ) *PWM Frequency ( 800Khz ) CPU Feature Intel SpeedStep ( Disabled ) Turbo Mode Function ( Disabled ) CxE Function ( Disabled ) Execute Disable Bit ( Enabled ) Virtualization Technology ( Disabled ) Intel HT Technology ( Enabled ) Active Processor Cores ( All ) QPI Control Settings ( Enabled ) QPI Link Fast Mode ( Enabled ) QPI Frequency Selection (4.800 GT/s ) PnP/PCI PCI Express Maximum Payload Size ( 128 ) Power Management Setup ACPI Suspend Type ( S1 ) HPET Support ( Enabled ) HPET Mode ( 64-bit ) One thing I just tried is setting all of my RAM timings to auto in the bios. It changed the timings to 11-11-11-24 with a tRFC of 128. With this change I made it through 3 hours of large FFT testing in Prime95 with no errors, but I'm assuming im slowing things down with these timings. What do you recommend? thanks for your help too :)

As I suspected your voltages appear low Reset memory to factory specs CPU VCore bump a notch or two, CPU VTT at least 1.15v (always keep within .5v of vdimm) QPI PLL VCore bump a couple notches enable Turbo Mode disable Execute Disable Bit retest

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm at 2 hours of large FFT testing right now with no errors and 7-7-7-20 timings. I'll let it run for another hour or two, and if it looks good i'll run a Blend test overnight. Thanks again!

I let the large FFT test run for 3 hours, no errors. I started the blend test 3 hours ago and its still going with no errors, looking good so far. I'm going to go for 8 hours minimum with the blend test, maybe 16.

Do at least 10 hrs that's how long it takes for Prime to run all it's different test one time, I should say for most system if your work units are taking longer than 15 min on a regular basis it may take longer and it could be indicative of another problem

Blah I wish I had seen your post sooner, I stopped the test at 8 hours. No errors though, and the 15 minute mark was hit regularly from what I can see :D I ran Intel burn test on Standard and High too, both were successful. Looking good so far.

You are likely stable but if you want to be sure run it as reccommended above. The IBT is great for stressing your Proc thermally and generally gets it hotter than many other similar app, therefore it serves it's purpose. None of these apps are the be all to end all, even Prime95 is limited in it's scope so, you should also run a memtest and some GPU benchmark runs using the highest settings to completely stress the balance of your system. You are not trying to break records here but you are trying to see how well your system functions past the normal average everyday requirements to insure you avoid those unwanted hiccups normally blamed on M$. I like 3DMarkVantage and HCI Design Memtest which are two solid apps that thoroughly get the job done in short order. As Always Good Luck!
