The latest nvidia drivers and previous ones, won't let me change the Power management mode setting to Prefer Maximum Performance. It always changes back to Adaptive after I've hit apply, clicked on a different screen and came back to check.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64, This is a relatively clean install, must not be more than a couple months old since clean reinstall. There's antivirus software running 24/7 and it's up to date. I'm the only person that uses this PC, I have absolute control and knowledge of all changes made.

Any ideas fellas?

Have you tried performing a clean install of the drivers to see if helps correct the issue?

Here is how to perform a clean install...
  1. Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles when asked. Reboot the machine.
  2. Download & save 344.75 driver to your desktop.
  3. Run the 344.75 graphics installer located on your desktop.
  4. Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except physx system software, if you are using audio over HDMI please select the HD Audio driver, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point select the 3D Vision driver also, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.
  5. Re-install Precision X/Afterburner if you want, do not install both choose one or the other.

Nope, tried this exactly as you described. Same issue.

Maybe it's your antivirus software blocking the changes? Try disabling all protection and try again.

I've went ahead and tried that aswell, no joy. I'm just wondering if my card maybe needs to be RMA'd again...

No your card doesn't need to be RMA'd.

Try this... Open C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\Drs and delete files nvdrsdb0.bin, nvdrsdb1.bin, nvdrssel.bin. Open nvidia control panel and try again.

Tried that aswell, same results. I've check the event viewer for anything and come up with nothing. Is there some kind of way to enable verbose driver logging for the nvidia driver?

I tried changing another setting in there aswell Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration, and Maximum pre-rendered frames, after I hit apply the Nvidia control panel lags a bit, then I click on a different window ie Adjust image settings with preview, click back on Manage 3D settings, and all the default settings are back. So i Won't save any changes I make. Reminds me of some kind of permissions issue, like the nvidia control panel app doesn't have permissions to write the changes to the database.

When changing any setting under the manage 3d settings menu inside the nvidia control panel do your nvdrsdb0.bin, nvdrsdb1.bin, nvdrssel.bin files get updated with a new date modified timestamp?

EDIT: You might want to try taking ownership of DRS folder and trying again.

The nvdrsdb0.bin, nvdrsdb1.bin files were not recreated after trashing them and making changes and saving. The nvdrssel file is back. And when I make changes the timestamp of that file does not update.

That was it, brilliant it's working!
I don't know why but changing the ownership of the DRS folder setting it to allow full control worked. Now the settings are saving. I'm really glad it's working, thank you for helping me! :)

That resolved the symptoms I was having which was, the GPU would clock to a lower speed, ie 2D mode while 3D apps were running which caused stuttering and low fps. Everything works perfect now, so weird that would ever even happen. Why permissions were screwed up is beyond me.

Glad to hear everything is running smoothly now. Maybe the permissions got messed up because of using/having GeForce Experience installed.
