Power Supply Plastic Wrap

I know this is EVGA forum, but I thought I ask this here and maybe others who have either EVGA or other brands can confirm something.

It’s been 14-16 years since I ordered PSU, my 14 year old Seasonic 1200Platinum needs replacement so I got  Seasonic 1300W Platinum. What makes me wonder, do all of them come wrapped with plastic film I don’t remember how I got my previous one and the supplier said sometimes they come wrapped and sometime not.

My suspicion is that the once not wrapped could potentially be used before or open box what you guys think.
thanks

In over 35 years of buying PSU's &/or building systems.... I don't think I have ever seen a unit in a plastic film wrap type.  In a plastic bag or cloth bag sure, but never in a film wrap.

*EDIT* unless you mean the outside retail box ?  - then every single new unit has always been in plastic wrap *

I have the 1300w platinum seasonic psu. The actual unit inside the box was not wrapped in plastic. The outer box was.

Nearly all major PSU and other hardware manufacturers use some form of tamper evident seals, whether its plastic wrap or stickers (EVGA uses both), that way it is evident whether the product is new or has been previously opened.

Sorry guys, just realize my org. thread was moved here

That's what I meant, the outside box wrapped in plastic. Reason I'm asking because one of the retail stores here I called him up and he said his supplier has some and when I asked him if it’s sealed in plastic wrap he said sometimes it is sometimes it’s not. I don't want o receive either open box that someone returned or used.
    What you think?

The original retailer said it might or might not come wrapped in plastic seal. When I tried to reinforce them and tell me whether that is 100% brand new and that Seasonic Taiwan did tell me that all their PSUs come sealed with plastic wrap, he didn't responded, that made me wonder.

I was always suspicious about their stuff, as if they have either open box and claiming new or something else.

Thankfully Canada Computers had 1 brand new so I grabbed that one and it came wrapped in plastic seal.

    Thanks guys for your input.

Hey Sajin, since you have the same PSU, do you run original cables or custom. I have custom cables and want to keep them rather than using the cables that came with PSU. I know the capacitors on the org. cables helps ripple and might help quiet coil whines, but other than that is it safe to use my custom cables and disregard capacitors. I remember speaking with Seasonic Taiwan rep few years ago about that and he said it will ripple a bit more using custom cables but nothing in a slightest to worry.

Since I'm getting 3090FTW and I will also have one of my Titan Black SC alongside, nothing OC what you think. T
    Thanks

I use the original cables. I prefer lower ripple as it keeps your hardware in better shape, and your hardware will last longer. Higher ripple damages hardware faster.

That's what I meant, the outside box wrapped in plastic.

Shrinkwrap means absolutely nothing. A $5 hot air gun or hairdryer and a $5 roll of plastic can wrap a package to look like it was from the factory. If you are concerned about receiving open-boxed items I strongly recommend googling an open-boxing video for the product in question to see how a known new one is packaged. Most hardware has a sticker or foil seal someplace for that reason.

    @Sajin

Since you have the same PSU there is no better person to ask what is a bit disappointing to me with my new Seasonic 1300W Prime Platinum.
My 14 year old 1200W Platinum was still running great, and the reason I decided to buy a new one  because the fan would come on to frequently (every 5-6min.) just browsing internet  and I thought internals were getting to hot,  so this might be a sign to get new one.

I just installed my new 1300W Prime Platinum and I am  a little bit disappointed, the fan comes on frequently and at only around 200Watts load and there is no really fan curve, It just goes to high mode, just like the 1200W Platinum did.

I don't think I made a mistake purchasing new PSU, the 1200W Platinum was at least 14 years old, if not more and I didn't want to put my components at risk of damage as you don't know what can happen to a PSU at that age.

Also, either its me or something was up with my older PSU. Now with the new PSU my system seem more responsive..am I just delusional?

My question is, does your fan comes on often, even when you not doing anything, like I said, mine comes on at around 200W and its fairly loud, it sounds similar to the 1200W, but I thought fan should not spin until you on 40% load, what’s the deal?

My PSU is in Caselabs S8S, fan facing down the case’s floor and there is about 2cm from the fan to bottom desk, so yes, there isn't much air going to it, but still, feels a bit disappointing, It’s about 22 Celsius ambient…Oh, also everything is connected to Cyberpower UPS

I love Seasonic, that’s all I have ever been using, so even if this sounds of the fan and frequency of going ON and OFF is normal I can live with that, but I need to know that this is the nature of this particular PSU and not something I should be worry now, although I heard few people mentioned laud fan, but no one speaks of fan been active every so often even when not doing anything.

    Thanks

Typically the fan comes on because of the PSU getting hot which normally happens under heavy load. If it is coming on while just browsing the web I would be looking for anything that might be reducing airflow to the PSU as it's a sign that the thermals are getting warm.

2cm space between fan and my desk making? I don't know, It was the same with my 1200W platinum so I know its by design. I thought since then Seasonic would change fans or something to make the fan quieter, it is loud, exactly like the 1200W. I went for 1300W thinking bigger will keep fan off longer (40% load) its not happening

I'm in 22C ambient so its not that warm

I can live with the fan noise, but what makes me wonder why the fan comes on so often in that room temperature and It’s not like S8S have no ventilation and unless my UPS showing wrong wattage that is been used.. I don't know. I do know my system feels snappier

Yes I just so it now, but all in all how is your noise level of the fan, Its pretty loud  when is on and why do you have on at all times, unless you constantly on max load

That would make a bit of a difference. I think because my PC is virtually dead silent the PSU fan envoys me, but I'm sure I can get use to it. Although my 14 year old platinum was just as noisy, but I expected more out of this unit. If I had to do it again, although I have used Seasonic for the past 20-25 years, it wouldn't be it, I would probably look at evga, the only problem is they are huge beyond 1000W
    Thanks for your input

Well, I changed my Seasonic 1300 Prime Platinum to Seasonic PRIME TX-1000, 1000W 80+ Titanium. Although the fan of the 1300W Platinum its not really a problem, but I do like silence and that fan do come on frequently and Its fairly loud. I heard that the Titanium is virtually dead silent even on full load (29Db) and 1000W will be more then enough for 3090FTW, Titan Black and small accessories e,g HDDs, SSDs and controller.

I will put that 1300W Platinum on my wife's small work HP system, It wont hurt
