I am just rebuilding my z690 and I am now getting Post code 97 with Z690 Kingpin and 3090 KingpinHC.

It just feels like the PCIe slot is not setting because of the shroud on the Z690 Kingpin mobo.  Anyone have any ideas?  I've cleared CMOS without any success.

97 Means "Console Output devices connect".  I've tested with both a display port and an HDMI monitor.

Is the card actually locked into the pci-e slot?

that might be my issue.  I snapped off the PCIE lock pulling it out because of the clearance issues in the first place.  That said, the motherboard is horizontal and the GPU is vertical pushing straight down.  No gravity sag.

Hmm. Sounding like the card is the issue.

Might want to take the card apart again to see if you did something wrong.

Is the card staying powered throughout the boot process process? Wonder if you aren't making any die contact and it is just insta overheating and shutting down. Granted, it would usually just go into a limp mode and not just full shut off.

Did you test paste spread after you installed the thermal pads?

the OLED is cycling through the kingpin screens like normal and i doubt its overheating.  I will tear it down tomorrow and rebuild it again.  I did peak the paste and pads to make sure contact was good and it looked perfect to me.

using extensions? i assume you tried reseating the card and power cables. latest dark bios? i'd try resetting CMOS or safe boot. you hadn't changed any of the CSM / boot settings before?

you know what it was????

I redid the thermal pads with the geilids (2.0mm/2.5mm) and put a little bit of the optimus backplate thermal pad where the kingpin two-sided tape was.  I removed that optimus glob, reinstalled the backplate and she fired right up.  (with awesome temps BTW).

Glad to see you got it sorted

so, excess pressure on the back because of "thick" thermal pad ?

or it was somehow conductive and shorted something.

i'm guessing you had bad contact on the rear pads (input side) from the extra height added by the optimus pad. if things don't line up nice and flush those suckers get HOT

poor water flow over the core (caused by low head pressure in my chiller loop) is also a nice way to heat the water up to 40C in under 2 mins. i wish i didn't know this
