The game is fantastic and it's free. If you like Diablo, I absolutely recommend it.

Only played this game for a few hours 2 years ago, but even just starting out I was so excited playing it, so I can see why it can be very addictive

Great game handled very well. I played in the beta and the devs have always been very community focused. They do a great job with their microtransactions and keeping the procedural content pretty fresh with the leagues. Definitely a game I don't hesitate to recommend.

If you think wow isn't casual enough then to be perfectly honest, I don't think PoE will be casual enough for you. It's possible to play it in a casual manner, but you will definitely struggle and it could take you a really long time to make progress without digging into some of the technical side of things like builds, crafting, league mechanics, levelling tactics etc.). In my opinion, wow is quite easy to play casually as long as you're mainly interested in normal questing and the sorry side of things (that's how I always enjoyed wow in the past). On the other hand, while PoE's story is good, that's not why I play it at least.

However, it is still easily the best ARPG in my opinion, and is definitely good if you're looking to really get stuck into a game. I find it highly addictive in short (a few weeks at a time) bursts and love the depth to the game. The level of detail you can get into is impressive and is what gives the game longevity over other games like Diablo 3.

If you're after a more casual game, I'd suggest Diablo 3 or Grim Dawn, which are both great games that allow you to get stuck in and focus on killing monsters and progressing the campaign much quicker, and without a super steep learning curve.

ARPGs like PoE are too much about speed running and melting mobs nonstop. Not the direction I wanted to see the genre go after Diablo 2.

I have tried PoE a few times and cannot get hooked on it. Just feels to much like a mobile game to me. It is weird how I can play Diablo 3 all day long but PoE, I last about a week or two.

I felt the same for a long time until I stated to dive deeper into the mechanics. Quite a high barrier of entry with this game as you have to be pretty invested in it before you even play it to get stuck in. For something to jump in quicker and have fun D3 is a better option for sure, or Grim Dawn.

Have an unknown amount of time (probably near 2k hours if not more) played at this point and new leagues are quite boring.
The game doesn't really allow you to just try random stupid stuff because the content is balanced around meta builds and you're effectively punished for trying anything else.
Also the harvest nerf basically crippled retention, as you have to either use sub-par crafting methods or buy your gear now.

Played PoE a few years back. From what I recall it was a hassle managing storage as a free player but I really really enjoyed the campaign. The music, voice acting, and story were all top notch. Could've easily become a standalone game.

I've found that PoE has been taking over my mind as of late. Like Diablo but better. Playing a necromancer with a hoard of minions is very fun, and the trade and drop system is pretty satisfying. So many minigames and replayability. The devs, GGG, seem like they've got a good thing going. Their microtransactions are pretty absurdly priced, though they are all cosmetic, so that's the only minor pitfall I can see. Having lots of fun with it after taking a long break.
