PCI-SIG® today announced the release of PCI Express® (PCIe®) 5.0 specification, reaching 32GT/s transfer rates, while maintaining low power and backwards compatibility with previous technology generations.
“New data-intensive applications are driving demand for unprecedented levels of performance,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG Chairman and President. “Completing the PCIe 5.0 specification in 18 months is a major achievement, and it is due to the commitment of our members who worked diligently to evolve PCIe technology to meet the performance needs of the industry. The PCIe architecture will continue to stand as the defacto standard for high performance I/O for the foreseeable future.”
“For 27 years, the PCI-SIG has continually delivered new versions of I/O standards that enable designers to accommodate the never-ending increases in bandwidth required for next generation systems, while preserving investments in prior generation interfaces and software,” noted Nathan Brookwood, research fellow at Insight 64. “Over that period, peak bandwidth has increased from 133 MB/second (for the first 32-bit parallel version) to 32 GB/second (for the V4.0 by16 serial version), a 240X improvement. Wow! The new PCIe 5.0 standard doubles that again to 64 GB/second. Wow2. We have come to take this increased performance for granted, but in reality, it takes a coordinated effort across many members of the PCI-SIG to execute these transitions so seamlessly.”
PCIe 5.0 Specification Highlights
Delivers 32 GT/s raw bit rate and up to 128 GB/s via x16 configuration
Leverages and adds to the PCIe 4.0 specification and its support for higher speeds via extended tags and credits
Implements electrical changes to improve signal integrity and mechanical performance of connectors
Includes new backwards compatible CEM connector targeted for add-in cards
Maintains backwards compatibility with PCIe 4.0, 3.x, 2.x and 1.x

I wonder is this why Intel didn't jump on the PCIe 4.0 wagon as AMD did?

It would be interesting to see what Intel plan is as well as NVIDIA plans. If we could be looking at PCIe 5.0 boards in a year or so I could see them skipping 4.0 fully.

PCI 4.0 will be the big rage this year and PCI 5.0 will probably kick in late next year or the year after. Normally if Intel adopts a new PCI Express they start with servers first. However since AMD has started PCI 4.0 on the consumer end things could change.

I have heard Intel will skip PCI-E Gen 4, they will go straight to PCi-E Gen 5 on the server side first in Q3 2021 with Rocket Lake. Was originally planned for Gen 4 but has since been changed since everything has been pushed back. This will also be the first non mobile 10nm part with sunny cove Arch. Of course I could be wrong, I told people 10nm desktop parts would be out years ago and intel made a liar out of me then :-)

PCI Express 4.0 is overkill for a video card. Now more overkill with PCI Express 5.0.

    Threadripper delay to implement 5?

    Unlikely but I can hope.

No, Threadripper just like EPYC will be Gen 4. I hear it will get more Gen 4 lanes, not sure how though, maybe through a Gen 4 chipset similar to X570... not sure. Could be just a crap rumor and they stay with 128 lanes.

The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

So AMD is doing PCIe4.0 and Intel PCIe5.0? Thats horsecrap! SO where does this put GPU chips?  How about some standards for PCIe4.0, do we really need PCIe5.0 on a non server side! Its bad enough that we've seen very little cpu performance/horsepower gains from Intel chips for almost a decade.

    I could see it now.

AMD makes both CPU and GPUs so they'll stick to PCIe 4.0 all around.

Nvidia and intel will partner up for PCIe 5.0 and stick it to AMD, giving them only a year or two of glory before 5.0 shows up since it's decade long dry spell.

Regardless I am looking forward to PCIe 5.0 on my next system build. However this time around I will be sticking with AMD Ryzen Zen 2, AMD X570 motherboard and PCIe 4.0 version. It takes several years to gain PCIe compliance for manufacturers to put it onto a board. I doubt we will see in in consumer motherboards until 2-3 years down the road. It is amazing that we are getting PCIe 4.0 for graphics cards this time around.

I wonder when EVGA, Nvidia and other brands will start announcing support for PCIe 4.0 graphics cards. AMD Radeon VII is releasing July 7, 2019! I want AMD processor, motherboard and combine that with a EVGA Nvidia PCIe 4.0 graphics card. It will be a major upgrade on my next custom built computer from my current PCIe 2.0 version.

Yeah I will probably go for PCIE4 myself, as you pointed out it will take some time before PCIE5 becomes universal and by that time AMD will probably have another line of processors.

Well I may not even get a PCIE 4 motherboard and stick with PCIE 3 if the PCIE 4 motherboards are too high, since we dont know what price level the pcie4 motherboards will be.
Remember there are going to be some crazy x570 motherboards out there like the ASRock X570 Aqua so what if the PCIE4 spec is only for motherboards in the $200+ category?
I do look at things from the mainstream perspective as well i am a mainstream user, sure i have some hardware that could be considered "baller" for their price point when I got them as after all I got my Ryzen 7 1700 when it first launched and that was considered baller even compared to the 1800X, and my EVGA 1070ti FTW silent pro is also quite baller thanks to its ability to clock about the same rates as a 1080 and its big beefy cooler (not to mention its normal "baller" prince point was at over $500 so no wonder why i got mine for $380 on black friday at the end of last year.)
Still i really dont have the money to blow into say a $200 to $500 motherboard, the most i am willing to spend for a new motherboard is $150 so if the PCIE4 spec remains above that price point I might just say screw it and just get say a b450 motherboard (or wait for b550 if and when that comes out) and just stick my guns to that.
That is to say if I get b450 at all, if somehow Asrock does have the ability to give me a bios revision to support zen2 I may just stick to my AB350 Pro 4 motherboard (though I am sure I probably wont get a new bios revision to support it as i am aware that my motherboard wasnt exactly high end when i got it)

PCIE 4 is already outdated. EVGA needs to make PCIE 5 Cards please.

"The PCIe 5 specification has been finalised in just 18 months, just two years after PCIe 4 itself was finalised. Compare that with the length of time since PCIe 3 was completed in 2010 and that’s an incredible ramp in speed. One of the most impressive things is that this technology is completely backwards compatible with existing versions of PCI Express. So any PCIe 4,3,2, or 1 device will still function in the same socket."

Yeah the data speeds are the main selling point of both PCIE 4 and 5, but intel skipping PCIE4? I am unsure about that.
If the mainstream motherboards stick with PCIE3 then maybe they will use PCIE4 for enthusiast grade and perhaps reserve PCIE5 for the prosumer and server market.
Its one thing to be excited about these new techs and have the bragging rights of owning something that supports them I still have to wonder about pricing.
I mean pretty much all tech is very expensive upon launch, thus why i am wondering if we will even see PCIE4 on sub $200 motherboards

With the announcement of PCIe 5.0, that might help lower the price of 4.0 from it's initial cost.

True, though that doesnt mean much when we dont even know how much of a "privalage price" PCIE4 will come at.
Even if costs are cut from the initial price we do not know by how much

Yeah, I am afraid why it is taking Nvidia a long time to unveil their Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCIe) 4.0 version? Also what is going to be the price for AMD X570 motherboards? Will this also influence whether both buying a AMD X570 and PCIe 4.0 graphics card are affordable, at what price point?

Would be nice if the new Nvidia Super cards are PCIe-4.0, wouldn't make any performance difference in 99% of tasks but would be a selling point.

I think they would need something like that to compel more sales on a already expensive GPU.

Re: PCI-SIG announces final PCI Express 5.0 specifications 2019/06/19 07:31:48 (permalink)
PCIe 6.0 spec announced with 256GB/s transfer speeds, twice that of 5.0

What just happened? The PCI-SIG (Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group) has just announced the PCIe 6.0 specification. That's rather quick given that PCIe 5.0 specs were made public just a month ago. And it's way ahead of the market adoption rate for PCIe 4.0 for which consumers have just started to get excited about.
Motherboard manufactures will have lots of hardware added to their pipeline as PCIe 6.0 specifications were announced yesterday at the PCI-SIG Developers Conference 2019. The successor to PCIe 5.0 revealed last month looks to double transfer speeds with 256GB/s transfers. This quadruples the speed of PCIe 4.0 hardware that's just started to make its way to consumers.

"Continuing the trend we set with the PCIe 5.0 specification, the PCIe 6.0 specification is on a fast timeline,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG Chairman and President. "Due to the continued commitment of our member companies, we are on pace to double the bandwidth yet again in a time frame that will meet industry demand for throughput."
The PCIe 6.0 spec is targeted at evolving industry needs which will greatly benefit AI accelerated applications, NVMe storage and of course, GPUs.
