It should not really matter much to be honest assuming you only have 1 graphics card in the top PCIE x16 slot.  Do you have any additional cards or M.2 or U.2 devices?

which sound card is it? some of the older sound cards are PCI type, not PCIe. if it uses PCI, not PCIe, it won't work.

There's a PCIe x1 slot between the x16 slots 4 and 5, remove the little cover and use that one if nothing is in the way..The bottom PCIe x16 slot can run in x8 or x4 mode, configurable in the BIOS..The onboard sound may have been auto-disabled when you put the sound card in, configurable in the BIOS too.

In the end, whatever works best without affecting the other PCIe lanes/M.2 bandwidths in a way that you don't want..See the PCIe Slot Breakdown in your Mobo Manual.

And just to add a little more, since it's a PCIe x1 interface, it'll always and forever run at x1 even in an x16 slot, no matter what.
