So I just purchased an EVGA GTX 1080 FE the other day, put it in my Asus P8P67, and turned my computer on. The Asus logo appears, I get the usual POST succeeded beep, but instead of starting to boot into Windows it just hangs and gives me a short, quiet beep about once a minute, which according to the manual means "VGA detected, Quick boot set to disabled, No keyboard detected" which doesn't really make sense. And I'm sure I didn't break anything because I swapped back to my old GPU and Windows came right back to life (and yes, the keyboard works), then swapped to the GTX 1080 again and got a frozen UEFI and beeping again.

Before I take it back to the store (and possibly take the 15% restocking fee hit), I figure I might as well check if anyone might have any ideas as to what's going on. Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum Koponz
Did you Update your Motherboard's Bios BEFORE you installed your New Card?
Did you clean out the Old Drivers BEFORE you Removed Your Old Card and Run DDU in Safe Mode?
Did you Reset your Motherboard's Bios AFTER you installed your New Card?

To answer your first question, I've been on the latest BIOS for about 4 years now, so there wasn't anything to upgrade beforehand in that area.

As for your second question and third questions, I can't enter the BIOS at all while the GTX 1080 is installed (it seems the system hangs before that point), much less get Windows to start booting, in safe mode or otherwise.

What is the rest of your build, what was your previous gfx card and what is your PSU?

I have:

i7 2600k
16 GB DDR3 memory
HD 6870
Silverstone ST75F-P 750W PSU

I think that should be all of the major components.

Your new 1080 needs more power than your old card, but the PSU seems to be capable enough unless you are overclocking the CPU like mad, are using some liquid cooling kit, have way more fans than a normal system, etc ...
If you are overclocking the cpu, I would try to start the system with stock clocks first. If that does not work, second thing I would try to do is test the gpu in another system just to be sure it works.

PS: Just noticed your motherboard has lots of power-saving features (EPU, VRM disabling abilities, etc). You might want to try to turn all of that off while you try to get the system working, just in case.

PS2: Just noticed this:

If you got the "POST finished successfully beep", then the beeps you are hearing after are not coming from the motherboard POST (because as you said, it was finished successfuly). So that beep you are hearing once a minute is not the "VGA detected, Quick boot set to disabled, No keyboard detected" from the BIOS. It might very well be windows. Did you uninstall all AMD drivers before uninstalling the old card?

This is all I can think for now. Good luck!

Ok, the folks over at Anandtech managed to help me figure this out - it turns out the solution is to do a CMOS clear while the 1080 is installed.

Regardless, thanks redleader00 and bcavnaugh - I really appreciate the time and brainpower you put into my little problem

Sounds like the OP didn't know how to do a cmos clear without accessing the bios. The guys over at anandtech must have told the OP how to do that.

You are right. He probably didn't know what you were talking about. Kudos should go to you.
