I bought the x99 ftx back in Dec. 2015. Still running strong with a 5930k. Is it ok to upgrade to a 9700k and use the same mobo?

No, not by any means. You can upgrade to a 6950x but you can not use any LG115x CPU’s. You have to use a LGA2011-3

So they had the 9700k in the wrong category when I used the search function. So is it ok to upgrade to the 6950x on an old mobo?

Make sure you Copy all your BIOS setting, set default settings & flash to the latest BIOS for the MB .... especially if the new CPU is not supported with your current BIOS

Only flash one BIOS & then test that it works - before flashing another BIOS position by changing BIOS switch

No, a 9700k will not work in your current motherboard as it's an LGA2011-3 board. For a 9700k you need a LGA1151 motherboard.

Not as clear as it could be- by mentioning the 9700 - "incorrectly came-up in their search"

OP seems to be asking about the -->  "upgrade to the 6950x on an old mobo?"

Yes I want a new cpu on an old mobo. If I can use the old mobo then I can budget a GPU. If not then a new mobo/cppu and ram will be in order and the GPU will have to wait

 6950x  good to go ...

I'm not sure if the OC bug still exists for 6950X - Not an issue at stock clocks .. might want to search for some details

Some people even run Xeon CPUs .. though you would have to know which ones to use on your MB

Me, I like my 5960X & 5930K

I run the 5930k and want to upgrade from it. Getting a small bottleneck with it even when OC
A 5960 would be a small upgrade
A 6950x would be a %10 upgrade

Will the mobo take it? It is a FTW EVGA quality mobo but... should I use budget on a new mobo/cpu combo?

depends if you find a good CPU @ a reasonable price

I am playing star citizen with 32 gb 3200 ddr4 ram and an evga gtx 1660 ti. On the old 5930k OC to 4.3
I am getting consistant 30 fps with some days getting 45 to 55 fps
Is this a cpu bottleneck? or gpu?

Hard to say since we don't know what game settings you're using.

5960x overclocks better than the 6950x so depends on if you want the cores or not.  Both are nice CPUs and pretty inexpensive at the moment.
