Each time someone comes in here raging about MLP, I post this explanation. here you go.
 
The best way i know to explain this is a comparison. we are serious about the message that my little pony has become. it is overwhelmingly about acceptance, friendship, and being a good person, where every other show, movie, and game has left those all to rot.   
We are as serious as the average gamer is about gaming. its not our entire being, we are people who have other interests and joys in life, but its our hope. its our thing that we look back to and smile because the customer screaming at us cant ruin it for us.   
   
people are so stuck on the fact that it was designed for a different audience, they fail to see the message. if little girls were watching an educational show aimed at teenagers, we wouldnt berate them for it. this show simply teaches lessons the world has told men they dont need to know. which is a shame.  
   
TL;DR version:  
We are serious, in a fun, happy kind of way. go friendship.

Funny story today.
My room mate has a Brony wallet.
He went and bought a big party pizza for small house party we had. (still kinda having)
He pulls out his wallet and the cashier says "oh my god are you a brony?" He is like "no i just liked the wallet" he is not but he kinda got it because of my influence.
So the cashier says "Oh good, i was scared you were one of those furries" Room mate is as furry as it gets. But said he was not to avoid awkward convo.
 
We have a small plan now to mess with that cashier if we get him again...

Balto, people have the wrong impression of furries (no, I'm not one, but I have many friends that are)....they, like another sect of humanity I can think of, don't bother to research and learn, let alone think, about things before making judgements or decisions.

Be yourself, enjoy your life ..as long as you 're not hurting anyone else, it's all good.

Other than that:

I love being a brony.

Deal with it, haters.
 

My thought on that is because the "bad" side of the fandoms get more attention (4chan, thread sims and whatnot) because the "good" side can't be made fun of as easily and most people who see the threads and/or videos think that the entire fandom can be summed up no matter how many messages you put before and after the video saying that this is used for comedy and does not reflect the fandom.
 
Some people will never change their opinion no matter how long you try to explain it.
 
Nonetheless, transdogmifier summed it up pretty well.
 

I will say that the Pony fandom ...has the most creative people around..I've never seen another fandom that does its own music, or videos like this fandom does....and I've seen a lot of fandoms in my near 50 years..
 
Yeah, there's bad in the good too..but ...the good is usually excellent...imo
