Nvidia Drivers Reportedly Enable New Checkerboard Rendering on Multi-GPUs (Excerpts) But a recent post on the 3DCenter forum suggests that recent Nvidia drivers have quietly enabled a new checkerboard rendering mode that points to potential for upping graphics without SLI. Saying the feature was quietly introduced might actually be an understatement -- it apparently can only be enabled using tools like the Nvidia Profile Inspector while running a multi-GPU setup. Very Nice to see this option

Take that those who are saying "blah blah blah, SLI is so dead in 2019". As long as AAA support SLI, multi GPU is relevant.

That's the problem though, isn't it? Maybe checkerboard rendering will be your multi GPU savior.

SLI has its pros and cons though in gaming yeah its not looking as good as it once did.

 Touche Tiger, Touche. Yes i have noticed the new feature but in reality is too late. Even when applying to make the image sharper, you can see the rendering taking a hit in performance. I used the feature and the performance takes a hit in playing you tube videos. In all honesty, Nvidia can not compare with the remarkable image quality AMD GPUs have always offered.

Of course it's quietly introduced. No one has paid the Nvidia marketing license surtax for Nvidia to talk about it. Nvidia only talks about stuff they extort licence fees from. Someone has gotta pay for those logos AIBs put on boxes right?

Am I understanding this correctly? So if a game doesn't support SLI natively, I can enable checkerboard rendering and have both of my GPUs work? I'll have to test this out on my 780M SLI set-up. Edit: Tried it, game crashed lol

Correct, but it could cause the game to crash as you've already found out, and the performance gain isn't as good as AFR, but it will be slightly better than single card when it works.

I would wonder if it could be something to do with PCI-E 4.0 or 5.0 support. The higher bandwidth would possibly allow two cards to work together in ways that wouldn't really work as well on PCI-E 3.0. Of course it could also be something they put in to try and it didn't work right so they abandoned it but code is left over.
