I recently upgraded my television from a 1080p model to a 4K model. and I am now no longer able to get 5.1 sound in Windows 10.

I have an EVGA GTX 960 ACX 2.0+ with just 2GB of RAM. The card displays just fine on the 4K TV, but I can't do 5.1 sound anymore? Is it really possible my card is that far out of date?

    The computer's a self-built system.

My mobo is an ASUS Z370-A Prime.

I was getting 5.1 sound through the HDMI jack on the 960, which was going into my AV receiver. The only thing that has changed in that entire signal chain was the TV. I'm thinking that it's not giving me the option for 5.1 because the TV's of a higher HDMI spec than the card. At the time I bought it, there were no 4K TV's and 1080p TV's were still kinda pricey. I'm probably going to end up having to upgrade to a newer card, not that I shouldn't have done that anyway :)

Are you using a high speed w\ethernet HDMI cable?

    4k with multi-channel audio requires a 18Gbps HDMI cable.

Yes, I recently replaced all of my cables with 18GBps cables; unfortunately, it appears that the problem may actually be in the TV's firmware. I recently disconnected the PC from the TV and put it back into the receiver again and I managed to get 5.1 out of it again. I figure it's the TV because I had the same problem with a more current video card, and I still wasn't able to get 5.1 when plugged into the TV. Every other source plugged directly into the TV (Roku, Tivo DVR, Blu-Ray Player) outputs 5.1 AC-3 through ARC except for the computer.

The 960 hasn't got much more time left in my system; it's been there for about eight years or so (basically since the 960 was first introduced), and it's on its last legs. Hopefully EVGA has some good prices on an RTX 3060 Ti or 3070 (non-TI, unless there's a TI at the same price).
