Bought a new hard drive and put it into a NexStar 3 enclosure which uses USB 2.0 and eSATA connections. I'm using the 2.0 right now. It shows up in device manager but not in My Computer/This PC.

The HD is a 3.5" WD 3TB 5400 (WD30EZRZ). OS is Windows 10 Home. Motherboard is a P8Z68-V LX.

Other HD's work in the enclosure. Anyone know what the problem could be?

    Did you run diskmgmt.msc?

Yeah, I did that already. Nothing with 3TB shows up in the list.

Did driver update and everything. I have a feeling it might be a compatibility issue with the enclosure.

Wait, I turned it on again and it's in disk management, now.

Ok, I am able to format it, now. I'll come back if there are any other problems.

    Thanks for the help, bcavnaugh.

I have a feeling it might be a compatibility issue with the enclosure. Bingo
Also USB is HOT, so the OS will not see all NEW USB Devices if they are Plugged in.
Most Instructions tell you NOT to plug in the USB Device until told to do so.
What is the Make and Model of your enclosure? Vantec NexStar 3 Supports up to 4TB Drives.

What is the max. capacity that NexStar 3
    can support?
A: Currently, the NexStar 3 supports Serial ATA hard
drive up to 1TB. Updated information will be
provided in the future as hard drive capacity
    increases.

Glad you got some of the Space.

What type of Partition did you create?
You need a GPT Partition to use all of the drive.
Are you also using UEFI Boot in your Bios?

Partition style is MBR. How do I go about creating a GPT partition? Talk me through it when you can.

Delete by using Diskpart from a CMD or DOS Prompt
    Type DISKPART and press Enter
    DISKPART>list disk
    DISKPART> list disk
Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
      --------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
    Disk 0    Online          931 GB      0 B
    Disk 1    Online          232 GB  1024 KB
    Disk 2    Online          119 GB      0 B        *
    Disk 3    Online           14 GB      0 B

The Disk you want to clear will be sown to you.
Say that it is Disk 3
    Now you would Type

    DISKPART> select disk 3
Disk 3 is now the selected disk.
    DISKPART>Clean
You cannot Stop the Command Clean Once your Press Enter
    DISKPART>exit
    exit

Now run diskmgmt.msc and create a GPT partition

First time I ran into a partition and enclosure problem.

Your solution worked beautifully. Thanks again for all your help.

As for the enclosures, I have 4 of them, and the 3TB and 500GB HD's don't work in one of the enclosures for some reason. Bu the 2TB and 320GB HD's do. Strange.

Re: New WD Hard Drive In Enclosure Doesn't Show Up 2017/09/27 11:37:26 (permalink)
Hello.. I apologize for resurrecting this thread, but I'm trying to get my NST-360UFS-BK to recognize a wd 1.5TB mybook. It's spinning the drive up, but nothing is shown via usb 2.0 or esata.. disk management shows nothing, this pc shows nothing.. I'm trying this on 2 different laptops both running windows 10.. on 1 of the laptops, when I try the usb 2.0 route, the device manager asks to install a driver for the new device and comes up as initio combo device class.. I purchased the enclosure new a few years back and when i didnt have any luck on my old machine running windows 7, I gave it a rest for awhile.. and the problem is, or could be, i dont remember there being any driver disc included in the packaging.. however, i read online that it should contain a mini cdrom, and i DEFINITELY never saw that. Needless to say, I'm at a total loss and my next logical step is to find those driver files, and everything i find online gets flagged for malware/viruses. Is there anyway you could possibly sort me out with the drivers so I can scratch that off my list of things tried and failed (but hopefully it would work). Seeing as Vantac no longer carries this product, Im basically out of options as far as proper drivers go unless I can find a good samaritan. Im looking forward to your reply, and either way.. thank you for your time.
