It absolutely amazes me how many cards EVGA put out with the wrong BIOS installed. How in the world does that happen?? It would be really funny to find out that after all stevemr2t's been through with his four gpu's, that it could all come down to an incorrectly flashed BIOS.

Why in the name of Enrico Fermi are any SC cards being shipped out with a Vanilla BIOS, if they're "hand picked" as was stated earlier? Not like these are $550 cards or anything.

What's really odd about when they use the wrong BIOS, the clocks are still correct. I don't know how you get a Vanilla BIOS with SC clocks, but that's how they've been shipping them. Like you said though, if the SC's and FTW's are binned to be better overclockers, how do we really know they were ever mean to be SC's??

loveordie Yer how else can we tell there nothing else different makes me think if the Vanilla and SC are the same card with only a bios modification I know a lot of people think differently, but I don't doubt that's the only difference between all three models. Vanilla/SC/FTW. Nothing more than a BIOS, which is more than likely the big reason why they threaten us with the whole voided warranty thing if we send in a card with a different BIOS. After all, they have to make it seem like you're getting more for your money. I know they are supposed to be sorted, and tested, but I'm sorry, until I see physical proof that this sort of thing actually takes place, I'm not buying it. A quick youtube video of a "behind the scenes" look into EVGA's "sorting room" would wash away all doubts, but I won't hold my breath for that one.

If the .80 bios gives you the correct superclocked frequencies, then it's a superclocked bios, but someone just forgot to change the number in the bios. I'd love to get one of these to do a hex-diff with "regular" SC bios. As some might remember from a thread I started here...but got no evga response to....you can have bioses with the exact same bios version ID, but have different checksums and differ in minor ways. I don't really know what's going on with this, as I'd think everyone at evga who's doing bios flashes should be working with identical bios files, but they're clearly not, or at least weren't in the past.

Actually, I think "Governator" has an SC with an .80 BIOS right now. Shoot him a pm, and see if he can email it to you before he junks it.

Actually, I think "Governator" has an SC with an .80 BIOS right now. Shoot him a pm, and see if he can email it to you before he junks it. It's pretty interesting to look at bios differences with a hex editor (I use Hex Workshop, but there's others too of course). Comparing regular, Superclocked and FTW versions show's stuff like the change in dates and board ID's, the area where the desired frequencies are set (3 byte hex values), and of course the checksum at the end of the file. The FTW bios has the same bios version ID as the corresponding SC bios, but I think that's just because someone forgot to change an "82" to an "89" in the internal bios version. The board number has been changed from 1482 to 1489 to correctly identify the FTW, just not the bios version number. Update: I should add that even when you understand where to make frequency changes in the bios and tweak them correctly, you can screw things up with something as simple as not computing the new checksum and fixing it at the end of the bios file. I was in a hurry and did that a few year's ago playing with the 6800's bios trying to fix (successfully) a lockup problem it had, and fortunately it's possible to recover from it. It's normally best to just use tools like Precision and Afterburner to set frequencies (coolbits in the old days, but that wouldn't work in the 6800 case I'm referring to).

jasonelmore I keep getting failed to read BIOS on both the thumb drive method, and when i burn it to a CD. Any ideas? Using SirJames's Tutorial verbatim, and his bios's and utilities. I have the original 80 bios, and i'm just wanting to get the better load temps that the 82 offers. Vanilla btw. Thanks I'm getting this same error. I followed the tutorial down to the letter, and it doesn't create a bootable disk. I get boot errors on the thumb drive when I try and boot up.

How are you actually setting the usb flash drive as your first boot device?? You don't have to go into BIOS to do it by the way. Just hit ESC when your computer restarts, and at the boot prompt, choose Hard Drive, and then choose your usb flash drive.

jdookie loveordie yer i wouldn't mind having a look to see if it matches mine my stick was right with the bios that come on it. Okay, I took a look and both cards have 70.00.1A.00.02 on the stickers. Is that what yours have on them? mrdrunk ugh I just ordered that card from the egg. hopfully its not the wrong bios. (I have a 285 that I bought from bfg that had the wrong bios and fryed) of course they replaced it after it fried but it took almost a month for them to return the new card. Don't worry about it. Even if they send it with the wrong BIOS, its an easy fix. yes mines the same so the 70.00.1A.00.00 bios u got on one of your cards was wrong to the sticker, so if u didn't know and u RMA evga would say u void your warranty lol , what do u think of my sig i just made it :)

This kind of throws a monkey wrench in EVGA's stand with only honoring warranty with the original BIOS, doesn't it, lol. I love the sig, just not sure about the rainbow of colors. Just a flashing red heartbeat would be cool.

But I really would trust EVGA they've been good to me in the past and have earned it. Your sig is so fitting to what I'm listening to right now. Psyradio.fm prog channel via Winamp.
