I bought a new case yesterday and transferred the guts of my old computer. Everything works fine but I have no sound at all, the headphone jack doesnt even work. I double checked the wiring and its correct (HD Audio), there are no errors in device manager, it detects when I plug in the speakers to the rear jack, but no sound. I have the latest drivers for Realtek and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling them. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers too. I went into BIOS, disabled onboard audio (no change), went back and enabled it, nothing. I tried another set of speakers (these plug in the wall instead of USB) and still no sound. Is there anything else I can do?

This is odd, I cant find Realtek anywhere on my computer. Under device manager (where it used to be) it only lists High Definition Audio Device and it says its a Microsoft driver. There are also 4 Nvidia High Definition Audio drivers.

I used driver cleaner to find the Realtek driver and uninstalled it. Still no sound.

You might have AC'97 configured in the BIOS, which would mean your HD Audio 9 pin (I think it's 9 pins) data cable would be useless. Check your BIOS settings or try using the AC'97 segment of your front panel audio.

The audio cable goes to the front jack for the mic and headphones. The jack i'm using is on the back and goes directly into the motherboard, no sound card. I tried using the HD Audio plug, the AC'97 plug, and unplugging both and get the same results every time, no sound.

I also checked the BIOS and the only audio option is to enable or disable onboard audio.

I'm going to assume you're running Windows 7, have you tried enabling the sound from the audio control panel? If you're using HDMI I believe windows defaults it to that, as opposed to any headset.

I am running Vista 64 bit SP2 and yes i've tried enabling/disabling the two devices. I hooked it up to my tv through the HDMI out on the GTX 460 and still have no sound (this worked before).

Another thing you could try is using driver sweeper and just doing a clean sweep of everything, that helped me iron some driver issues out.

If you don't know what driver sweeper is, click me

Could you also either list out what components you're using, or make a forum signature with your most current computer components?

I ran driver sweeper to get rid of the Realtek drivers without positive results. Here is a list of all of the components i'm using...

    Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz (stock)
    Foxconn DG33M03 motherboard
    Cooler master 212 cpu cooler
    6Gb DDR2 RAM (667Mhz)
    EVGA GTX 460 768Mb
    Corsair TX750 power supply
    Cooler Master 590 case
    four 120mm case fans
3.5" memory card reader (out of old dell case)
DVDRW drive (not sure who makes it, from dell case)

Nothing was changed and everything was working just fine in the Dell case.

Ok, a simple thing you could try is using the old audio cable in the newer case if possible. If it works, you just have a faulty audio cable.

One thing you can do is get windows 7 64bit install it & see if that works for you cause Vista is a bad os anyway!

If your a student you can get it for $29.99!

I plan on doing that in the near future when I get another hard drive so I wont lose my data. So do you think my OS is corrupted or something?

yellow_fever, the cable only goes to the front headphone jack/mic jack and i'm not using them at the moment. I unplugged the cable to see if it would fix the problem but it did not. The old cable is soldered to the ports which would not fit in this case anyway.

I ran System File Check and it came back with: Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are in the CBS.log

I sifted through the log and i'm guessing that PQR's are the repairs made. It said there were 124 of those repaired, not sure how many were repated, but it made no mention of what was not repaired. Sound still does not work.

It might sound dumb but does "Speakers | High Definition Audio Device" have a green checkmark beside it in "Sound" under playback tab?

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

yep, Windows detects when I plug/unplug the speakers as well. It's like nothing is wrong but I still have no sound.

edit: I also wanted to add that I discovered something odd, in playback devices it shows the speakers plugged in and working as well as the Front Mic (there is nothing in the front mic jack) and when I plug in my headphones to either front jack it shows the front mic is unplugged.

Have you tried multiple devices? The device you're using may have malfunctioned or something. Sorry if we make it sound like you've overlooked something simple but your problem is pretty odd...

I thought  the same thing at first, so I plugged in another set of Logitech speakers (these get power from the wall) and still no sound. I think its either a bad motherboard or a corrupted OS, but i'm not sure which one is more likely. On one hand, Windows is in charge of operating the drivers, but at the same time Windows says everything is fine, yet no sound is coming out.

I thought about buying a sound card but i'm not even sure that would work.

I have sound! It turns out the problem was something simple but had never crossed my mind, System Restore. I rolled back to two days ago and sound is back.

So the question is what could have caused this to happen? There were 2 Windows Updates installed and i'm betting that screwed something up. The headphone jack on the front still doesnt work but I think that's something entirely different with the wiring.

Oh yeah I bought Windows 7 so looks like i'm upgrading anyway. Thanks for the help guys!
