the lack of instruction sets that make it a top class processor, and the fact it has far lower instruction pipe performance compared to its hyperthreaded intel competitors.

only someone without a clue about IPC would take a crap performing AMD processor over an intel these days.

a nice overclock on a 920 makes any amd phenom II look like a stuffed pig,

Aww, seems I hit a nerve. Tsk Tsk.

I'm very happy with my cheap and rather excellent perfomance of my AMDs. I think I made out rather well for 140 bucks.

You sure? Hmm, Lets see it only does everything without a hiccup for a fraction of the price. But then I guess its ones own opinion on what using ones brain is.

AMD loses out big time when developers actually make use of newer instruction sets, infact AMD's SSE3 performance is still half that, if not less then the i7 performance.

You will not get full performance out of the heaven demo on an AMD chip because it lacks SSSE3, which does provide benefit to 3D applications and games when used (and Heaven uses a cpu dispatcher like most benchmark apps from what i've been told). AMD currently have no instruction sets beneficial to modern games, and of what i've heard of their first bulldozer chips, they won't include SSSE3/SSE4.x either.

And heres where the whole problem lies. The number of programs that actually take advantage of those are limited currently. Wont be hitting any kind of heavy mainstream use for a while. Why pay the premium now , when the time they do have hit mainstream everyday use, The new processors at that time will have them. So you can say hey looky at my benchmarks?
You dont need nor really recommend buying a Dugatti just to go get your mail at the end of the driveway now do you?
Now if say intel had there i7's priced at the same prices as AMDs then yes there would be a difference. But the difference right now between AMD not having SSE3/4 does not construe the price difference of Intels currently processor lines for everyday mainstream use. Not only that but the differences in games and that is not that really big of a gap. Its like trying to justify a price difference of $500+ between a gtx 460 SC 768 and say maybe a gtx 470 when all they would be used for is playing say farmville.

So I'll do another run with my i5 760 at 3.2 GHz.  Same clock speeds should be more fair.

I really want to know about heat issues though, it already seems to be quieter, but I want to know my SLI options and since they'll be stacked on top of each other it's a concern that i cant wait to be addressed!

Okay guys.  Edited post #181 (top of this page).  My i5 760 was running at 3.2 GHz as was their Phenom II X6 1090T.  My 4.2 GHz overclock didn't make much of a difference in Heaven - results are nearly identical.  It makes the GTX 580 look laughable.

If it comes at $499 I think it will be good for new buyer. However, if it comes @ the price $599 as rumored. Imo, not worth it.

I believe there are still plenty of more drivers coming to the gtx 580 guys, just like the 480 when it first came out, was not that much of a difference compared to the 5870, and everyone complained about how a big fail of a performance to the nvidia 400 series line up cards, now look at the 480 performance boost, about 30% better performance on games only from drivers, but still.. it has issues like the heat/noise and power consumption, but they seems that they have fixed these problems with the 580, now we can wait for it to be released and see how well it will perform.. then wait for a few weeks to get some serious drivers boost! i'm fairly sure the 580 will be a great card.

We'll see.  The GTX 580 is hardly a new architecture so I can't see driver improvements doing much for this card.

Point #1:  If the price ends up being $599, no sale, no thank you, sorry.  The only way to justify that price in this economy is a dual GPU card, end of story.

Point #2:  If this card's performance is nearly identical to the 480, but it runs cooler and quieter, it will certainly be worth it to anyone except current 480 owners.  It really will be just a 485 then, and that's fine (in the 280 vs 285 comparison).  But my point is if it performs like a 480, but runs cooler and quieter, you might also assume better overclocking headroom, which would be swwweeet!
The people who are true enthusiasts (people on this forum) want not just what a card can do at stock, but the true potential.  That's why I think the current 400 series generation best overall card is the 470, overclocks (on air) like mad, there was SO MUCH headroom on that card!

^ Dunno what the announcement will be, might be 580 related, might not. Don't get your hopes up on the NDA though - won't be lifted yet.
