Yup

Q6: What other new features are introduced in the PCIe 2.0 specification?
A6: The most predominant new feature in PCIe 2.0 is 5GT/s speed, which includes new mechanisms for software control of link speed, reporting of speed and width changes, and control of loopback. Other new features include:
  • PCI compatibility using the established PCI software programming models, thus facilitating a smooth transition to new hardware while allowing software to evolve to take advantage of PCI Express features
  • Enhanced Completion Timeout Control, which includes required and optional aspects, reduces false timeouts and increases the ability to ‘tune’ the timeouts
  • Function Level Reset and Access Control Services, giving enhanced robustness and support of certain IOV features (optional)
  • Slot Power Limit Changes to allow for higher powered slots, which support the newer, high-performance graphics cards. This new feature works in tandem with the 300W Card Electro-mechanical specification
This could explain some users getting unstable Furmark or OCCT results when using PCIE 1.x slots.

Spec for PCI-E slot power is still 75W....although more can be consumed....albeit outside of the spec.  Similar to how the 6-pin PCI-E connector can supply double it's spec'd 75W rating.

Sorry nVidia didn't need Brad Hawthorne in their development and AMD allowed you inside for setup, but to nit pick like this is really unbecoming of you.

Keep digging the hole deeper. It's reinforcing the reasoning behind the guideline infractions I've turned in on you multiple times tonight. If you're lucky you'll queue up enough of them to earn yourself a temporary forum ban.

There are lots of 480 owners that will switch to the 580 if the performance numbers rumored so far are true. I think some people are going to be able to pick up some 480's at a very nice price.

This is what I'm thinking, Why pick up 1 580 and have 1 killer system, when i can let someone else eat the depreacion, and put 480's in all three of my systems for about the same price, Of course i'll wait and see what the prices do, and consider the warranty options, as used cards have none. But if enough people have to have the latest and greatest, and dump their old stuff cheap enough, it could be sweet for everyone.   I could have 3 480's all with 260 phisx cards running in a month ( since I already have the 260's )  for about $500 - $600 if everything works out.

Hey man, don't mean to argue here.  This is one of those things where the info went sideways in the beginning when the new spec was first "released" and the misinformation has been spread for a few years now, even by many reputable review sites and techno gurus.

Fact is PCI spec isn't free like the ATX specification is.....so not as many people have access, and this is one area where PCISIG should step in and disclose everything in a free and open format so everyone knows what they are talking about.

The wording was messed up and easily misinterpreted but the fact remains that the PCI 2.0 Spec as set forth by PCISIG is in fact 75W for the PCI-E slot.

Look at page 39 here for the breakdown:http://www.pcisig.com/developers/mai...1aa04b52bc3fec

Edit:  Now I remember the wording that screwed most people up from the start: PCI Express x16 Graphics 150W-ATX Specification

A lot of folks took that to mean that the PCI-E slot power was increased to 150W.  Of course they would, that would be a logical assumption especially since unless you belonged to PCISIG or were a paying member you couldn't actually read the spec.  The spec basically said that you would power a 150W card by way of 75W being provided through the slot and another 75W being provided by the "new" 6-pin PCI-E connector.  The 150W slot myth has stuck ever since.

err, no, like i said, the specification is not clear on it but the PCI-E 2.0 slot outputs up to 150w (per vendor implementation).

I know what you said.  I'm just saying you are wrong.  Until I was corrected by an actual PCISIG member about a year ago I too thought it was 150W through the slot.  Click on the link and read page 39.....it is actually quite clear that it's only 75W through the slot.
http://www.pcisig.com/developers/mai...1aa04b52bc3fec

You can beleive what you want, but all the documentation from PCISIG states 75W.

If it was 150W the high power card spec would be 300/375W, but it is in fact 225W/300W as only 75W is provided by the slot.

3rd party benchmarks will be interesting to see, especially if they try to do clock for clock comparisons between the series. I personally don't understand the noise regarding how they are naming it. Something very similar occured moving from the 8000 series to the 9000 series for nvidia and several others from AMD or nvidia in the past. GF100 has been the "major" architecture change from nvidia in recent years and i am not familiar with the next most recent architecture change from AMD. Although revisions from any architecture change are to be expected either through die shrink or other hardware "optimizations" that occur.

I am just hoping that it is an actual hardware change that is causing the improvements over something BIOS or other software related.

I'm not liking this, The 580 is looking better and better...........I'm even starting to foam at the mouth.....Trigger fingers are getting mighty itchy........

Someone please lock me in a cell now..........Before I breakdown and buy a couple 580's

Now Seriously speaking, that 580 is looking like what the 480 should have been. Wonder if Nvidia will be coming out with a full throttle "GF 104" Next?

i don't see why not
no other way to improve the GF104
perhaps a gtx570?
no more castrated versions with the 5xx series hopefully

Yes you can improve GF104.  The GTX 460 1GB, the top of the line GF104 card, has 336 CUDA cores, 56 TMUs and 32 ROPs.  But GF104 is capable of 384 CUDA cores and 64 TMUs.  A card with a full GF104 core is expected as a GTX 470 replacement unfortunately, but with the new, tweaked chipset being called GF114.  I call this unfortunate since it has much less CUDA cores and smaller bus width than a GTX 470.  Probably less VRAM too and less ROPs.  Just more TMUs and clock speeds increased enough to offer a higher memory bandwidth and pixel/texture fill rate.  An overclocked GTX 470 would still be superior in performance.  But this is what more people want.  Less heat, less power consumption, less noise and better out of the box performance.  Not as many overclockers out there.

The thing is the 580 is gaining 10 percent on clock speed alone on the 480. So im going to wait for the website benchmarks to come out. And also see how this thing overclocks and how cool does it run.  Also I want to see sli performance vs. the 480 sli.

Good point. Me two. I have alot of hope for this 580 card. Been waiting for the right moment to upgrade this 295. I'm confident I won't be let down.

Its not outside of spec, and it IS 150w. the specification is not clear on it but it is the case.

Sorry, but that document is full of antiquated information. It was correct at the time it was put forward for consideration but the end product of the PCI-E 2 specification ended up with a number of changes, including the dropping of the multislot cards, 4pin pci jacks and does not include the revised max Slot power considerations.

PCI-E 2.0 IS up to 150w, if it wasn't the case, the GTX 480 would not even be able to complete OCCT while heavily overclocked as it takes requirements up to and possible over 340w.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand,

Zardon (Kitguru) says 429RRP (499USD), but i doubt it, if the product is easier to bin for it will cost less to produce.

You are a tough nut to crack, I'll give you that.  Here is the most up to date document that has had no changes to the electromechanical spec from when it was released until now.

Page 8 has the spec in question clearly outlined
http://www.pcisig.com/dev...baa0856011c665ac770768

Pages 13 & 15 on the 225W/300W Electromechanical specification....which remains unchanged from the time of release
http://www.docin.com/p-76176182.html

PCI Expresss 2.0 is and always has been 75W from the slot and there is no documentation anywhere that states otherwise aside from tech sites and news articles that have it all wrong.

Multi-slot cards are still allowed in the spec...up to three slots.....which is why we have multi-slot cards today that consume up to three slots but most only consume two.

I read the previous link and could find no reference to 4-pin PCI-E connectors.  There is no outdated info in the document that was changed.  It was the final spec.  PCI-E 2.0 was release January 2007.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Full Specs and Release Date 2010/11/02 23:14:22 (permalink)
Interesting article from KitGuru. So the main highlights that interested me the most was the price, and the timing of the release. Also, how well it will perform over the 480. Let's see if the reasoning for the timing of the lauch of the product pays off for Nvidia. If Nvidia starts out the gate first, which they will, they definately have a better chance at selling more cards, and making more money than their competition (Radeon 6970). The 6970 being sold too close to Christmas will be too late. People need to purchase their cards alot sooner so they have their product, and be comfortable, that they will have their product by Christmas. The article also talks about being on the magazine by the Nov. 15th issue. This would be good advertisement for Nvidia. I think Nvidia put alot of thought into this, and came up with a very smart idea. Getting a good performing product out to the people. This is not only good financially, but brings out the best technology for this moment in time, before they come out with the next good product. When you run a business, not only do you want to make money, but also improve on the technology, and have the better technology over your competition.

GTX 580 vs GTX 480 2010/11/05 14:46:05 (permalink)
Here is a direct comparison between my GTX 480 and a GTX 580.  Someone posted an Unigine Heaven GTX 580 bench on my thread over at TPU so I decided to make good use of it.  The system specs are as follows.

Compared System:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @ 3.2 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580

My System:

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 760 @ 3.2 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480

I tested my GTX 480 using stock clocks (700/1401/925) and an overclock to 863/1726/1000.  The settings used in Heaven are as follows.

Now the performance results...

GTX 580

GTX 480

GTX 480 OC

The GTX 580 was able to pull slightly ahead against a stock GTX 480 but only by about 1 FPS average.  It could not outperform my overclocked GTX 480.

So, for 400 series owners, it will come down to how well the 500 series overclocks it seems.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the post.
