Hello,

A couple of weeks ago I decided to make a Folding rig because my Grandmother died of Cancer 2 months ago. I have always loved computers and thought why not mix it with something that can benefit the Hole world. I have asked many Forum Members for tips and opinions and many thanks goes to them for helping me out with this computer.

Specs: 1x Evga Sr-2
           1x Corsair Ax1200
           1x Intel 5620
           2x Corsair Dominator 6G 8-8-8 24 1600
           2x Corsair A70/H70
           1x Evga 465

I just started to work again and decided to buy a cheap 5620 for now just to get the system running, a month or so I should be able to afford 2x 6 core cpu's (Which one, I am not sure yet).
I am thinking of Buying an 800D and change the motherboard try out with a mountain Mod tray but I am not sure yet what case I will get.

I hope you Enjoy and more pictures will follow up.

It almost looks like that the Corsair 800D Motherboard  Tray was made for the Sr-2!

If you're just building it for Folding@Home work, I would put your money towards GPUs first.  Get 3x dual slot cards or 6x single slot cards (whatever makes the most sense from a PPD perspective).  You'll get much more PPD from multiple GPU3 clients than from the SMP CPU client running with more CPU cores.

I thought the -bigadv is the best way to get the most ppd. Yes, its only ment for Folding @ home.

It is. You get two hex cores in that rig forget about gpu folding as you will have to run some high powered gpu's to make up for the loss of giving up the cores for gpu's.

If you look at it from a ppd/watt point of view, you'll get more bang for your buck with the smp bonus points. The gpus will drag on the cpus. You can  run with 10 cores instead of 12 and assign the 2 cores to the gpus, but I suspect this will cause a bigger hit to the smp than gain on the gpu.

Bigadv. points per watt is 3-4 times greater than GPU points per watt. Stick with the bigadv.

I agree with everyone here, fold smp work units and don't waste your CPU horsepower on GPU WUs.  There is probably a balance where both types of work units even out but you are going to use a lot more power (at the wall) doing that then regular bigadv work units.  You have a dream machine for bigadv work units so don't waste it on GPU folding....

I don't know much about the SR2 board but you should be able to overclock your processors (and RAM) by increasing the Bclk.  The Bclk drives the QPI link (Intel's high speed transceiver replacement for the FSB) which most clocks including the memory controller primary clock and L3 cache clocks are derived from.  With your rig I would recommend making the memory as efficient as possible since all those cores are going to need a heck of a lot of memory bandwidth.  So in general cranking the clock speed of the CPU up the ying yang is just as important as making sure the memory works efficiently.  Also you will get even more performance out of folding bigadv smp work units using Linux is you are comfortable with using Linux.   If this is a dedicated folding rig then don't let the Linux part scare you, it's not as difficult as it may seem others around here who didn't know anything about Linux are doing just fine using it.

You mentioned cases, I have a Mountain mods Ascension case with the horizontal motherboard mounting which is almost big enough for an SR2 but not quite.  So if you have questions about the spacing let me know and I can take some pictures for you to see what the room is like in this monster of a case :)  The SR2 tray fits in this case but you can probably find a cheaper case to house it.

I'm terribly sorry about your grandmother.  I have many members in my family fighting cancer including my mom and dad who are two time survivors and know it's never easy.

I'd have to disagree, I mean for the time being, i'd deffinatly go for the GPU GTX 465 as that CPu isnt too great, maybe when you get the 12 cores total in there it would be better to go solely bigadv but, filling up that SR-2 with, say, single slot GTX 460's and you have yourself a WAY faster folder than a single bigadv.

Beautiful rig and pics!  Grab another CPU (5620 or better) to fill out the SR-2 and follow the advice above of sticking with Bigadvs.  The SR-2 is "in its element" with Bigadvs and that is where you are really seeing what it can do.  If you get the 5620's OC'd to 3.8GHz, you can crank out a 6900 Bigadv in 28.5hrs (17:07 TPF) for a points total of 103,000.  I have dual GTX470s in my SR-2 rig, but rarely Fold on them because of the greatly increased room heat that comes from Folding on them.  They do get used for other things though...

I decided to go with the 800D and the Mountain Mode Motherboard Tray. As you can see I completely stripped down the case and i'm waiting for the new motherboard tray which should arrive tomorrow morning!
