Having a weird little issue with MSI afterburner. I click the "Auto" for fan speed and it just puts my fan speed down to 0%. I've always used this setting and on idle it puts my fan speed around 38%, but now its not working. When I unclick the auto setting for fan speed, it goes to around 25% on idle. However the custom fan curve controls work. Anyone ever have this issue? I've tried using DDU and reinstalling my GPU drivers and I've reinstalled MSI afterburner. Same results.

Sounds like you may have accidentally flipped the vbios switch on the video card.

The physical switch on the GPU? nope I don't think I flipped it. I haven't even touched the GPU today. Should I update the GPUs BIOs maybe?

I just checked, its on the Master BIOS. I've used the same settings for MSI afterburner for the last 8 months. I'm pretty sure I've always had the "Enable Custom User Defined Fan curve" off. And I clicked the "Auto" button by the fan speed. That always put it around 38% for idle.
I've asked elsewhere and I'm getting really mixed feedback on what that "auto" button really does. When flipping it on "Auto" (and just auto) does it enable the 1080's Hardware fan curve? (Default) Or does it enable an MSI afterburner default fan curve? Or does turning off "Auto" (and not having anything else on) turn on an MSI afterburner fan curve of some sort?

Auto is suppose to make the card run on its default fan curve.

Sounds like it is working exactly the way it is supposed to work. If you want the fan to continue to spin at idle by default/"auto", turn off your computer, unplug the power supply from the wall, hold the power button on your computer for a few seconds to drain any residual stored power, and flip the switch on your video card from Master to Slave. In the Slave position, the fan doesn't spin down to 0%, by default.

The Auto button changes fan speed from auto fan control to manual/fixed fan control and vice-versa..When it's lit, it's on auto and not a manual/fixed fan speed. The User Define button changes fan control from either using your card's GPU fan curve as defined in it's VBIOS, or using Afterburner's default custom GPU fan curve or one you've created in the Settings -> Fan tab, software fan control..When the Fan Speed box is lit green around the edges, Afterburner is controlling GPU fan speed and not your card..When it's not lit, your card is controlling GPU fan speed..And that's the way it is.

Gotcha, so having "auto" on, runs the card at its default fan curve that was set in its BIOS. Therefore it would make sense the fans are at 0% when on idle as that's normal.
Any idea why it was at 38% before and now its at 0%? It actually makes more sense the way it is now than it was before. I always thought turning on "Auto" applied a default MSI afterburner fan curve of some sort, as before if I had auto off, it would run the default fan curve, and having auto on, it would turn the fans on.

Auto just switches between an automatic GPU fan curve or a manual/fixed GPU fan speed..Yes, Auto on runs the GPU fan on a curve whether the curve is defined by your card's VBIOS or Afterburner..If Auto is off the fan speed will be locked where it's at or wherever you put it at..If it's locked low, can cause the GPU to run hot/throttle. User Define determines what controls the auto fan curve..User Define off (Fan Speed % not green around the edges) = Fan curve is determined by the card's VBIOS..User Define on (Fan Speed % is green around the edges) = Fan curve is determined by Afterburner which overrides the card's VBIOS fan curve.

I'm using the 'Default MSI Afterburner v3 skin - big edition' skin because it's not so cluttered and is more simple/user friendly..You can change that in the Settings -> User Interface -> Skinning menu..So what I see on my skin will be a little different from yours..You might want to change to the more simple skin until you become accustomed to what's what.

Wooohah Gotcha gotcha I understand now
click the little cog on the left side of the fan area to start the custom fan curve other wise it just runs on the vbios defaults
