How many of you have done this? I have only seen one video on youtube.

I put a 950 heat sink on my standard EVGA single fan 1060 first.  It came from an ASUS strix 950 with twin fans.  While it did bolt on, the card couldn't boot the 2 fans.  I ran it with a single 92mm fan and it cooled quite nicely vs the puny original heat sink.

I then found a 970 EVGA twin fan.  I theorized that if I used the same brand of fans, maybe it would work.  To my delight, it did work!  This heat sink is very LONG and extends way past the card.

These heat sinks used the outside larger hole pattern, instead of the standard smaller pattern.

The goal of the project was to just try and make an SSC type card that would overclock more stable and run cooler.

I can now hold 2060mhz no problem without throttle and less than 80c.

    UPDATE:

I was able to find another 970 with an even more HUGE seat sink than the 950.  It was also an EVGA card.  It fit quite well, except for the fan pin header being just a hair short to reach the plug.  After some careful wrestling, it did pop in.  This time, the twin EVGA fans did in fact work.  I think the ASUS ones were drawing too much power.

The results are mildly better than the first one.  With the bigger heat sink, it now takes even longer to reach peak temperature.  No matter how much I overclock, I can't seem to reach 80c.  I also now can push the memory a little farther as the 2nd fan is basically blowing directly down to the memory.

    VERSION 2 :

I had another 1060 single fan as well, so I put the ASUS heat sink mentioned on the first post on that one.  I then added twin 80mm thermalright ball bearing fans which exactly matched the size of the heat sink.  There is just the perfect gap in the middle as well, to let some heat escape.  Those fans draw very low amps, so in this case both fans worked with the adapter on the stock gpu plug.  It runs well, very cool at idle.  Those fans run very quiet so even at high speed you can't hear them inside the case.

So, if you have a 1060 950 1650 or whatever single fan card with a small heat sink, consider upgrading to a big twin fan heat sink!  There are plenty of 900 series cards for sale for $25-40.

I'll have to find a way to post pictures.

Pictures finally.  Evga 1060 6GB Single Fan, converted to twin fan with EVGA 970 external parts.

This is the 2nd card, before picture is the same as above (I had 2 of these)

    Asus 950 heat sink:

Removed fans, did not work with EVGA board (crashes at boot):

Thermalright twin 80mm.  You could also use noctua if you want to be fancy, or any other low power draw 80mm.  A single 92mm works as well, but the coverage is not great.

Pictures of the twin fan thermalright 80mm on the asus heat sink.

Looks like you found a way to make the cooler work, congrats

Thank you!  I was wondering why the image links didn't work.  Updated the posts.

I have a blower style card on the way, to test and see if you can convert it that way as well.

I assume the 3GB version would have the same results, but not sure.
