I was lucky enough to get a 3080 TI FTW3 but my power supply only has two PCIe ports in the back, and two cables. The 3080 TI FTW3 requires 3.

I know it's recommended to use a separate cable for each port, but am I good to use one separate one, and daisy chain for the other two? I would have two cables connected straight to the power supply, with one of the cables being daisy chained into two PCIe ports on the GPU. If so, which port should I plug the separate cable into? I've read that the farthest left port draws the most power, but I've also read that the one in the middle does. I really want to avoid damaging my brand new GPU or power supply.

My power supply is a Superflower Leadex Gold 750W.

As long as EVGA isn't cheaping out on the cables, I doubt you'll break anything with that setup. You have a good quality PSU that shouldn't get hurt by heavy loading, and a lack of power isn't going to physically damage the card.
If I were you, I would not be afraid to try it out, and my hunch is that it'll work fine at stock. Overclocking might be a different story, but I'm sure you know that.

Frankly, I wouldn't daisy chain power. Use two separate cables. The cards can draw a lot of power under load
and your cable may not meet the requirements for the power draw.

note: IMO, you shouldn't daisy chain...ever.

EVGA doesn’t make the cables, so I am curious about the first sentence.

Does your cable have the connections already as part of the cable or are you using a separate splitter? If the cable as the connections as part of the cable I'll say you'll be fine.
Else no, buy a new PSU

Will you be ok ?= maybe, possibly.   Are you a lucky person ?, do you like tempting fate to come out ahead ?

There are hundreds ,if not thousands, of threads on this site alone telling their tales of woe about their system shutting off/ tripping the over-current protection  on their PSU , using these high-end 30xx series cards.  Here is just one of them -> https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/3387518

Stories of melting down 750, 850,and even a few 1000W units .  Apparently the 30xx series have some pretty abnormally high transient power/ wattage/ amperage spikes ....

If it were me running a $1500 videocard -I wouldn't expect to keep powering it too long with a  $99. PSU
Get a minimum of an 850 W Platinum/ Titanium - 1000W would be my recommendation.
Be smart, be safe...use something quality to protect your high dollar card & system.

If you daisy chain, do it with 1+3, middle connector should be on its own.  And don't try to overclock the card by raising the power limit.  Consider getting another power supply down the road if you want to do more.

You should be fine. Daisy Chain #1 and #3, those two pull less than #2. Pin #3 never goes above 85W.

Oh, yeah, my bad. As long as superflower didn't cheap out on the cables.

Whether you use 2 or 3 cables, it's all drawing from the same, single 12V rail in the PSU. That means the PSU shouldn't know the difference, and the GPU won't either as long as the cables are good.

My 3080Ti FTW Ultra worked just fine with two cables, 2nd and 3rd power plugs using one PCI-E cable, was too lazy to fetch a third cable from storage.
Lately changed it to three, though, just to be on the safe side.

Depending on your cpu 750 may be cutting it really close as the ftw 3 has a 400watt stock limit and 450 if you max the power slider. If you have a power hungry cpu you could be tip toeing around your rated wattage. It may survive in just gaming load though. On the daisy chain it may work but you do run the risk of going out of spec of what an 8 pin is rated for. So then it would be dependent on how much above the rating the gauge wire is on how well it handles it.

sounds about right for the 5900x I guess it would depend if the op has a power hungry 11700k,10900k,10850k, 5950x kind of cpu. I've seen 728 on stock in heavy cpu gpu combind loads but that was rog real bench which simulates using cpu and gpu for rendering. But I have a hungry 10900k. But in games or less crazy rendering you should be in the clear as I've only seen around the same power as you I still need to test cyber punk as some areas in that game seem to hit pretty hard

And has been the case since I installed my 1080ti in June 2017 (have powerklink too)

Daisy chaining should be no problem.  Especially if you're using manufacturers cables that were daisy chained.

Standard 18 Gauge wire for PCIE6+/8 should be able to safely conduct 60 Watts without signifiant increases in temperature.
There are 6 live wires in PCIE6+2/8 cables so it's capable of 360 W total.
Each PCIE at most draws 150W on the GPU side.  If you daisy chain, you would be drawing at most, 300W which is safe of the GPU side since the wires are capable of handling 360W.  As previously noted, all the plugs are connected to the same rail anyway.

When plugged into a Kill a watt, I've never seen any draws greater than 590W at the plug when running bench tests (GPU drawing 390W)

Frankly, I wouldn't daisy chain power. Use two separate cables. The cards can draw a lot of power under load
and your cable may not meet the requirements for the power draw.

note: IMO, you shouldn't daisy chain...ever.

Yes, I'm using 2 separate cables. However there are 3 ports on the card. The cables split into two 6+2 connectors though.

Does your cable have the connections already as part of the cable or are you using a separate splitter? If the cable as the connections as part of the cable I'll say you'll be fine.
Else no, buy a new PSU

Both cables split into 2 separate 6+2 connections. They're the factory cables.

i am in the same boat as you are, just bagged a 3080 ti ftw3 ultra gaming, but my psu only has 2 pcie cables and after 3 days of reading forum posts and asking around i can safely say its fine, but also not fine, but it should be fine, but it'll cause damage, but it also wont, if it comes with daisy chain cables its fine, but also that's just companies skimping to save money, but the cables can support it, but they are only rated for 150w, but that's just a under compensating number for liability, but 18 AWG wire is fine, but also have at least 16 AWG wire, if the PSU only has 2 sets of 6+2 connectors go for it, but also you need to get another cord, the 30 series is too power hungry, but also its not as power hungry as people say it is. The only general consensus is to make sure you have a good PSU regardless of how you plug in the GPU, but that's already common knowledge, this is the longest rabbit whole I've ever been down to say the least.

Re: Is it ok to daisy chain two PCIe cables on the 3080 TI FTW3? 2022/01/11 00:59:53 (permalink)
I just bought same card and i have a RM750x PSU.

I nearly used one of the 8-8 CPU cords as a third until i asked the question and decided not to.

The description said there was Four 8Pin- 6+2 pin cords with it but in fact it was two 8-8 pin CPU cords and two 8 pin to 6+2 pin with one daisy chain function on each.
I have actually ordered another 6+2 cord but in the meantime ill have to daisy chain two and have one independent. Ive heard conflicting information that the socket on the left towards the front of the PC draws the most power and ive heard the centre draws the most power. can anyone confirm?

Second question, I have used the Slot on the very right to plug int he CPU cord, does it matter which is plugged in where with regards the 8 pin PCI/PSU on the PSU side?

Additionally, if your PSU has multiple 12V lines, you should connect GPU to different PSU lines for smoother PSU operation.
