The second GPU Always runs warmer - its partially block by GPU2 & the heat coming off the back of GPU2 is rising up to the intake of GPU1 (top GPU)

My basic conservative fan curve is:

Temp C + 10 = fan %

So at 60 C = 10 = 70% fan

How many PCIe slots between the two GPU ?

Case & Fans (how many, size, where mounted, blowing In or Out) make and model if you have it handy (not all fans are created equal)

---> Generally more fans should blow In than Out, as positive air pressure seems to always cool the best

Room temp ? as card temp is relative to the cooling air --> Delta T = the difference between ambient and device

Case & fans also make a large impact on cooling -- you need to get the Heat out of the case before it is recycled back into the GPUs

After the thermal paste change GPU #1 is at 80°C at 52% on the fan matching the new GPU #2 with the exact same numbers with 100% usage on both cards. I'm happy with these results. it's currently 84°F in my room.

I would say (80°C) 176°F is still to hot, how is the Fresh Air Flow in your case to the GPU's?
But then it is  84°F in your room.
What are your GPU's Running that brings up the Heat to 80°C?

I was running NiceHash but also while playing Crysis 3 maxed out. both card never went above 80°C. the GTX 980 max temp is 98°C and i know GPU BOOST 2.0 throttles above 80°C so i figured it's OK that way.

There are 1 X16 slot and a smal1 X1 slot? so you can call that two slots or one?. 2 fans blowing in from the front, 1 exhaust fan and Corsair H100i v2 blowing down. the psu is also sucking out air.

Up to 10 C warmer for the "Top" GPU is normal

Only count the PCIe Case covers in between GPUs

That's what i am seeing at their idle temps. 8 - 10 C difference but both max at 80 C

If you pushed the Voltage for Max OC - then you could test with slightly less to decrease the temp

or lower manual OC -- but thats not any fun

room AC / temp control of room - is all you can do at this point

not like I never had to do this  with the side panel  off  waiting for the new AC  to be put in

https://www.amazon.com/OPOLAR-Desktop-Powered-Personal-Cooling/dp/B01J5053Q6

one thing I can admit is I tried a 980ti hybrid  this go round  and no matter how hot I can get it in here /room   temps with it been a non issue   , so far 48c max pounding on it  ac off and hot as all heck in here  testing that , now its amatter of it lasting  and not burn up like your now seeing with the 900 cards  just at this forum  ..lol.... knock on wood

And when the card just decides that it wont cool anymore (mine after 6 months. EVGA 900 cards seem to have this defect) all you can do is try to cool as much as possible.
I have heatsinks on the top of my card.
I have 2 dedicated fans JUST for the video card (plus the 5 regular case fans and water cooling).
PLUS I have the A/C blowing into my case.
PLUS I have MSI Afterburner on at 100% fan speeds while gaming.

If I do all of that except msi afterburner, it STILL gets to 82c on the card, not even playing a game, just launching a game!
And this is with my room at 72/73F !

When the cards go, they just go, and theres nothing you can do to stop it, except for maybe double water blocks (1 on each side of the video card).

MX-2 Thermal Conductivity 5.6 W/(mK)
MX-4 Thermal Conductivity 8.5 W/(mK)
Note: W/(mK) Higher Number is Better.
And Both are good for up to 8 Years.

Hello,

is Arctic Silver 5 safe to apply to my GTX 980? i already have it and i want to double check here since i couldn't find any clear answers online. also how do i safely apply it? i saw this image below in a PDF from EVGA so i assume this is the correct amount that should be applied?

Update -
I returned Arctic Silver 5 12g ($25.99) and got two ARCTIC MX-4 4g and kept the ArctiClean

Update -
After the thermal paste change GPU #1 is at 80°C at 52% on the fan matching the new GPU #2 with the exact same numbers with 100% usage on both cards. I'm happy with these results.

I choose Grizzly which is so good full load round 75c at 4.7ghz never see over 80c.... it been used almost 1 and half years with no issue!!!

Unless your chasing world records ---- +/- 2C ---> close enough that application technique and cooler selected make a bigger impact.

The ease of application deserves to be part of the equation as it helps technique be effective

Good to see you have not seen the Grizzly dry-out as others have with some of their products.  Applying TIM should not have to be an annual event

As with all things everyone has their favorite flavor

just wanted to add that arctic silver ceramique is absolutely safe to use under any conditions. doesnt freeze, isnt conductive blah blah. ive no idea if its even made anymore but it used to be one of the few tims recommended for use with below ambient cooling. tbh the main reason i started using it was because of the as5 warning and needing something to put on my cpu/gpu that wouldnt freeze. used it for 10-12 years until switching to mx4.
