So I recently purchased a nice Latitude D830 laptop, and noticed this feature in my BIOS today:

What exactly does this do? Is it something that will give me a "cell phone in my computer" type of deal, or is it 3G/4G internet etc? Never seen these before, since I never really owned laptops in my life. Would be BOSS if it was 3G/4G internet so I can access internet without hunting for hotspots! Hmmmmmmm I can dream on.

depending on the wwan card installed you can use a sim card here is the documentation for this the sim card slot is located in the battery compartment

Woah, you're right! I removed the battery and found a small card slot with a label "JSIM" on it. SIM card slot!

Now, forgive my n00b standing on wireless devices. What SIM card should I get to get this thing working on a WWAN? WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) basically means no hunting for hotspots to get on the internet right? I SO TOTALLY WANT THAT!!

Since I've also never really owned a cell phone before (I know I know... I'm old school like that, I have one of the fastest gaming rigs but no mobile technology whatsoever!) where should I acquire my SIM card and how to get them to work? Hopefully no monthly subscriptions etc?

    Monthly subscription, unfortunately.
You will only need the SIM slot for AT&T and T-Mobile, the rest of the market uses CDMA which has a MEID, similar to a MAC address, that you will need to give the provider.

You will also need a WWAN card - it needs to be compatible with the network provider you pick, so either buy it from them, or if you cant, pick up one on fleabay that is advertised compatible.  They use different frequencies, so double-check your work.  It can be confusing.

I can help you if needed, I have a bit of experience with this stuff.

Be very weary of cellular data plans. You will use up 2GB cap of bandwidth fast if you treat it like a regular computer.

Thanks for all the info guys! Unfortunately the monthly subscription really bothers me (reason why I don't have a cell phone, especially not a smart phone). I'll have to wait it out and see, good to know that my computer supports all this!
