I am going to be receiving a Core2Quad Q6600 here in the next day or two.  I am upgrading from a Core2Duo 6750 and wondering what people are running their Q6600 at.  I am hoping to push it to 3.0 at least if not more on the cooling I have.  Can anyone provide me some information or help?

I managed to get between 3.0-3.6GHz, was on a 790i Ultra board from EVGA though. These cpu's do run hot though so be sure not to push it too hard.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Well I will never know now.  The jerk hasn't shipped me the product and today he ended up refunding the transactions claiming that I was difficult to work with.... I only emailed him because it had been a week and he hadn't shipped the processor.  How does that make me difficult to work with???

I run a Q6700 on a 780i board. 3.6Ghz stable on water. Thinking of an upgrade to a Q9650 for the time being. Waiting to see what end of the year will bring tech wise before a complete overhaul.

i had a q6700 that ran 3.5, to get 3.6 made it a little too hot for me. its a good little chip tho.

you should invest in a q9650 or q9550, way better stuff and they usually OC to 4.0 with little to no problem. They also use a lot less voltage than the q6x00 series

Yeah that is what I was wondering.  I am wondering if it would be worth it to pick up a used Core2Quad to use until I get my new AMD proc/mobo.

Well...."worth it" has many different meanings and in all reality you are the only one that can determine that  I've had my Q6600 for 3 years now and like it alot.  I had this from my old Dell XPS 630i and installed it in my work pc which had a E8200 in
it.  I do know that BFBC2 runs much smoother with the quad vs the dual core along with MOH also.  In all reality, I don't notice much different from my two rigs when doing day to day things (email, word processing, and running programs for work).  If you could find a Q6600/6700 for under $100 I'd say get one...but that's me

That is my biggest reason for why I want the quad is because I want BFBC2 to smooth out.

Didn't have a chance to check last night, had pool leagues. I'll check this evening. I can run some stability tests as well if your interested in this cpu I have.

I have owned 2 GA-P35-DS3L motherboards and still have a GA-P35-DS3R.  It was very easy to OC 2 Q6600@3.2Ghz and a Q9550@3.4Ghz. The motherboards didn't like to go higher than 3.4Ghz and I couldn't get near 4.0Ghz. They're great OCers for budget boards. I used a 9700 LED and TRUE 120 CPU coolers with the following BIOS settings.

    M.I.T.
    CPU Host Control: [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency : 400
    PCIEx Frequency: [100mhz]
    Performance Enhanced: [Standard]
    C.I.A.2: [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD) 2
Manually set the recommended memory timings. Advanced timings can be tricky with higher frequencies.

    DDR2 OverVoltage Control [+0.1]
    FSB OverVoltage Control [+0.1]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1]
CPU voltage control 1.375-1.42V worked with my Q6600 CPUs and my Q9550 needs 1.25V

    Advanced Features
    CPU Enhanced Halt (CIE): [Disabled]
    CPU EIST Function: [Disabled]

    Intergrated Peripherals
    SATA RAID/AHCI Mode : [AHCI]
SATA Port 0-3 Native Mode: [Enabled]
    USB Keyboard Support: [Enabled]
    USB Mouse Support: [Enabled]
I disabled the serial and parallel ports

    Power Management Setup:
    ACPI Suspend Type: [S1 (POS)]
    HPET Support: [Enabled]
    HPET Mode: [64 bit] (Windows 7 64bit)

How much are you looking to spend? One thing I forgot to mention was that I had GO/SLACR Q6600 CPUs. B3 doesn't OC as well. Other C2Q CPUs are similar so pay attention when you're shopping around.

EDIT: Here's one for $140 shipped.

If you are interested in anything which will help you game better, I would not recommend upgrading to AMD. Sure AMD earned the price-to-performance crown, but Intel owns the gaming performance crown.

It really comes down to the little money I have to spend and if I can get a new AMD processor and motherboard for the same price as an Intel processor then it makes sense to me to get an AMD processor.  I secretly am an AMD fan and always have been.  I don't need the best and greatest, but as it is right now I need something better.

Have you found an AMD processor and motherboard for the same price as a C2Q CPU?  What about OCing potential and performance?

With a quad core I wouldn't be as worried about OC'ing as I am with my Core2Duo.  I can get the AMD Phenom 965 Black Edition processor and the MSI 790XT-G45 mobo for $250 in comparison to the Q9550 which is 2.83Ghz.  The 965 is stock 3.4Ghz so right off the bat I get a higher speed.  I am not going to get into the debate of intel being able to clock higher or better then AMD.  Just by straight numbers a new AMD processor and mobo would be better then an Intel processor for me at this point.

Wouldn't you have to buy new ram (DDR3) also??  Posibly a new OS (if your current one is an OEM version).

So what if the 965 BE has a higher frequency than a Q9550? Which one is actually faster? (I honestly do not know the answer to that question off the top of my head)

Frequency cannot be compared that way accross different manufacturers and architectures since core frequency has a back seat to processing power due to core design, numbers of transistors, and chipset design.

@ budd200369 - That motherboard supports DDR2 which that processor can run on and I am not running an OEM version it is a purchased Windows 7 Ultimate so a new OS won't be an issue.

@ ty_ger07 - Like I said I don't want to get into a foot kicking contest about speeds or design there are other forums on here for that.  I was an AMD fan before I got my Core2Duo and I think it is time for me to go back.

Whatever.    To me it makes more sense to buy the fastest processor for the price.  If you consider that an AMD processor would require also purchasing a new motherboard, a faster Intel processor which supports the motherboard you already have may make sense.  Sure the faster Intel processor itself may cost more than the AMD processor, but it would be offset by the cost of not having to buy a new motherboard.

If you want to stick your head in the sand instead of doing the required research, that's your decision.  Seems foolish, but whatever.  It is your money.

I would just be more comfortable with the decision if you provided us with evidence as to why the decision makes the most sense for your dollar.

Because I am recently married, going to school, have a kid, and money isn't flowing like with some of you right now.  It makes more sense to me to upgrade to something that I know is going to be around for a few more years and is not being phased out like the Core2Quad is.
