The rumors and leaks have been churning away for months and the latest point at a supposed 10-core AMD Ryzen 7 2800X CPU that will be compatible with the current AM4 CPU socket as well as performance leaks for Intel's upcoming 8-core 9700K.

Specifically, in order to reach 10 cores, it would need to use three CCX's as each one has four cores. So, eight-core CPUs such as the Ryzen 7 2700X have two CCXs, six-core CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 2600X have two as well, but with a single core on each CCX disabled. It's highly unlikely that it would be able to squeeze three CCXs on to one die, at least not without a massive redesign or a smaller manufacturing process, but we're not expecting the latter till next year with its 7nm Zen 2 CPUs and the former is clearly very unlikely.

So it is possible these rumors about a 10 core Ryzen 7 are only rumor without any basis in fact. Now it is entirely possibly AMD could release an 8 core Ryzen 7 2800X with higher clock speeds.

9900K is a sweet processor, but that $450 price tag.......

Actually for Intel that is a good price. If it weren't for AMD the price wouldn't be this low or released this soon.

The 450 price tag of the i9-9900k lines up quite well with the performance vs the i7-9700k. Looks to me that AMD still have price/performance lead, but given the rumors that these new intel chips will be good overclockers, i'll be interested to see how far that margin narrows once actual reviews hit the market.

I accepted a while back that thete was no 2800X planned, that any official statements regarding it was just to get Intel to show their hand. Does that mean Intel's 9900K is the fastest possible SKU for mainstream? No, but we'll soon see how close to the mark it is; I'll go by Siliconlottery's statistical assessment of binning.

Specifically, in order to reach 10 cores, it would need to use three CCX's as each one has four cores.
    Oh my God, no, lol.

Has anyone looked at the Summit/Pinnacle Ridge die? It is way easier to add two cores to each CCX making 6-core each, that way there is still only one Infinity Fabric link between them. Doing so, the entire die area goes up by 25% to 266mm2 at 12nm, because the cores don't take up much space.

Frankly, I'm certain before committing to 7nm, I'm sure AMD made 12nm and 14nm samples of Zen 2, 12-core and 16-core dies to make sure everything works. Who knows what the yields were, but even a dual 8-core CCX would be about 50% bigger than the dual 4-core CCX counterpart. A 12nm version of a 16-core die would go to 320mm2-- which, if memory serves, was about as big as Bulldozer was.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].
