I tried making the Fractal Design Core 500 mini box working with the new EVGA FTW 1080. Acording to fractal design 310mm graphics cards and 160mm PSU are supported. Well just barely. Cables from the Corsair RM650i resting up against the backplate of the 1080 FTW. And managing the 30+ cm long cables in that small a case. Not really nice. No airflow, no cable management. Then there was the Noctua NH-L9i 57.5 CFM CPU Cooler not really enough for the i7 6700k. So I'm sending back the CPU cooler and the Core 500 case. I started looking for a different case, noticed the Define Nano S. More room for cable management. But then I saw  and this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZa8juLeMx0&feature=youtu.be&t=3481 That does not look like enough breathing room for the graphics card. I wanted a not too big PC case since I travel 3-4 times per year, and I have no use for all those extra HDD slots as I just have a single SSD. I'm close to just sending everything back, including the nice EVGA 1080 FTW, and just game on my old i5 2500 with 560. I'm really stressed about this, as the 2 weeks free return on all the PC parts are coming up soon. This is my partlist so far pcpartpicker.com/list/HZ4f9W

It's enough breathing room for that reference card I would not put your FTW 1080 in it.

It's enough breathing room for that reference card I would not put your FTW 1080 in it.
Exactly my thoughts... trying to find a different case now. Think I will go for the Noctua NH-D9L CPU cooler.

In small cases, if possible, if you can spare a 120MM space for a rad/fan, I'd go with an AIO liquid cooler over those huge air coolers. (corsair H75, H80 if you have space for that thick rad.)
nano S for example: x2 120MM on the front for airflow, 120MM rad/fan on the back as exhaust.
regardless, I still think the 1080 FTW will get hot, but probably better than having CPU/GPU both exhausting all that hot air into the case together.
but this is why blower GPU's are recommended for super small cases.

I would rather not go for water cooling. Going to move the PC 3-4 times per year. Call me old fashioned, I do not really trust water to be inside my computer. :s
I guess I have to look at midi tower cases instead. Cooler Master, Fractal Design and Corsair are the easiest to get here in Denmark.

Hey NeptunDk, can you give us pictures of the current situation? I tired looking up pcpartpicker builds https://pcpartpicker.com/builds/ with the case to see what there doing differently, also you might have to use small form factor power supply such has Corsair SF series if your having issues with the size.

Look at my modrigs, that case is smaller, has great cable management and airflow. Corsair AIR 540.

 That heatsink/fans look absolutely ridiculous. Small or cramped cases. Always go reference card.

I already disassembled the Core 500 I built. Trust me it was way to tight. Even with removing the 5-1/4 bay holder on top of the PSU it was still hard to make room for CPU, Mobo, 2x PCI-E 30+cm power cables.

Air 240, if the 540 is too big.
Interesting cases. Although I think I might as well go for midi tower then, and the reason I was trying with the Core 500 was to be small enough to fit in a luggage trolley for easy travel. 240 and 540 are not tall, but just really wide instead.

Have you considered something like the Corsair SF600 PSU or Silverstone SX700-LPT?

Have you considered something like the Corsair SF600 PSU or Silverstone SX700-LPT?
Sadly I already have all the parts, so I'm trying to return as little as possible. While switching the RM650i I have now for the Corsair SF600 is possible, I'm not sure it will even be enough room for cables. Yet alone airflow issues. And if I have to return the Core 500 case, it has to be before end of Friday.

If you are working with a smaller case, one that has ITX motherboards max, you will have issues with cooling as you have less room for heatsinks and fans. I would recommend liquid for that CPU and likely a smaller version of the GTX 1080. If you must have an OCed 1080, go with the SC instead of the FTW as it is smaller and meant to fit in a smaller space, otherwise go FE or ACX 3.0. Also, that CPU will put a large amount of heat out, so I would personally say that the i5-6600 would be the most I would put in their with air cooling or i5-6600K on liquid, again to reduce heat that will decrease the life expectancy of your computer. A sure way to solve all these issues would be to go with an mATX or larger motherboard and a case that can fit that, but if you don't have that kind of room, then you won't be able to get the best components without some sacrifice.

For anyone interested...
Got my Cooler Master Silencio 352 and NH-U9S. Took some hours but its up and running. Doing ilde test atm to see temps. Will then later do something more heavy on the CPU/GPU.

...If you're gonna go with a smaller build id recommend an AIO for the smaller area. A heat-sink like that must add a ridiculous amount of weight on that motherboard. Honestly that thing scares me just looking at the picture...

Try the Corsair Obsidian 250D mini-ITX case. 11.40"H x 10.90"W x 13.80"D. I built one for my wife, card is positioned perfectly for air intake, and can take a 140mm H90 CPU closed water cooler at the front with push and pull fans, or a 240mm at the side but only some models at the side as there is not much clearance. Check out her ModsRigs for a few pics. You can put an air cooler in there instead, but the Corsair closed water loops are pretty safe these days.

I'm currently looking at the following cases:
Corsair Carbide Series 100R - Silent Edition
Corsair Carbide 200R - Black
Cooler Master Silencio 352
Fractal Design Core 2300
All 4 of those cases are relatively large - 3 of them close to or more than twice the volume of the Fractal Design Core 500. If you want mobility, those are not your best bet imho. Besides the Corsair Obsidian 250D mentioned in my previous post, you might also consider the Corsair Graphite 380T which is built for mobility and similarly has the horizontal mobo and thus side mounted GPU for great airflow. It's bigger than the 250D but not as big as some of those ones you are looking at, and has the added bonus of a built-in carrying handle which makes it ideal for your needs.

P.S.: @Op - how are the temperatures with your new case?
Around 74C for both CPU/GPU at max load for 1 hour. I still have some cable management to do, but I think this is good enough. Might not be easy to travel with, 600g CPU cooler makes me worry with traveling by train. I basically came to the conclusion that I would rather have a better setup for the 48-50 weeks a year when I'm at home. I can bring the old i5-2500 nvidia 560 those 2-4 weeks. Old pc good enough for the 1080p and older games I still play.

Not to mention, if you're traveling with an FAA approved carry on, there's no way you're going to get lucky every time with a water cooled PC, considering the PC has *water* in it. They restrict that stuff at the security check (at least in the US, TSA doesn't allow it through.)

I have the 1070 ACX 3.0 in the Core 500 with a big Noctua D15S and it's fine. You want a shorter PSU though, I have the EVGA Supernova G2 650W wich is 155mm long. With good cable management all fit pretty well even if there's a fan controller in the bay.
Only problem is the noise because you need high fan speed. Plus in my rig the exhaust fan is really stuck against the cooler wich produce a bad noise.
