My sister and I literally got poisoned by sunblock. I started throwing up when we got on the lake today, and we couldn't figure out why, as my entire family has eaten the same exact things, drank the same things and swam in the same places. Yet only my sister and I got sick. Only thing we did different was put on the rub on sunblock and everyone else used the spray kind. My sister and I went back to the hotel room, took a shower (separately lol!) and 45 mins later I was back to normal. How could this even happen?? Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

First a subtle warning that swearing/cursing even if disguised by asterisks or the forum filter is not allowed on the forums. Such posts will be edited or deleted.

If a sunscreen causes this type of reaction in the USA notify the company in writing and also post a copy of that letter to the FDA.

Drank a lot of water, was only on the water for maybe an hour, copperstone and SPF 50.

As for the cussing/astrick thing that was an accident. I had copy pasted this post of mine from a more mature forum where we are all adults and can handle the occasional curse word.

That is really strange.  My kids and I just got back after a week at the beach along the Pacific.  We went through 3 bottles of Coppertone SPF 60 spray, and half a bottle of Coppertone SPF 60 lotion for our faces and ears.  Not a cloud all week and temps hovered around 33C every day.  Nobody got sick, but we all have great tans lol.  Maybe there is a chemical in the sunscreen that you and your sister are sensitive to.  A lot of people have chemical sensitivities.

This is one reason I read all labels and pay attention to the ingredients, even if I am not eating the item.  Most things put on your skin are absorbed, so be careful.  I would suggest you get an allergy test to see if there is something in the list of ingredients that causes a reaction.  Maybe be best to stay away from that product.  I use the Coppertone Sports line when I golf.  Never had that impact, although the liquor consumed on hot days makes me feel like that after the round.

Your just kissing butt right there. We more mature? Please have you not seen a lot of the cry baby threads people make? By the way that sucks you got poisoned. I never heard such a thing with sun block. I know your not dumb enough to eat it but I thought maybe you were going to say some friends pranked you and put it in your mouth while you were sleeping and got poisoned.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

oh boy....  I think I recall a similar thread with Balto "literally seeing someone have something terrible happen to them caused by a flu shot or something"....  not an exact quote but the same type of nonsensical anecdotal evidence and a weak grasp on causation vs correlation.  Now "My sister and I literally got poisoned by sunblock"?????

-Sunscreen can make you sick if you eat it.
-Some people have sensitive skin and have reactions to chemicals in sunscreen (rash mainly)
-You did not put on sunscreen and start vomiting, because of the sunscreen, and take a shower and feel better because you washed off the sunscreen.
-just because others didn't get sick, doesn't mean it wasn't something you ate...  even if you all consumed it.

do you understand confidence intervals and P values?  The reason they are examined is that in tests of statistical significance there are no absolutes, especially with humans and disease.  Simply going to the most recent thing you and your sister had in common, and "literally concluding that this is what caused it" is.....  well.....  wrong.

and being wrong is fine until you blame something (like vaccines, sunblock, McDonalds, city water, etc) that was not responsible, damage that product, and overlook the actual source which may still be causing harm.

my advice: contact your local health department and report your situation and leave the statistics to them.

Tony Stewart's tire poisoned Kevin Ward Jr.  ^^^^

No Kevin Ward had a concussion, He swung at more than one driver coming around the track. He might have thought he just got his melon peeled and those heads were moving pretty fast and being a hot head tried to make contact with one.

FDA is useless.... Anyways you were on the water and that can make you sick... You could have gotten sea sick... Or heat exhaustion... Anything that happens on land happens 3 times faster on water...

If the FDA gets enough complaints on a product then they will do something
There are also so many experimental and worthy treatments that they never approve... Some states have overridden the FDA and allow them to continue treatments other states flat out make them illegal... I guess they could have there uses if they actually worked for the people... Balto I don't know if the sunscreen made you sick but depending on the lake you could have contracted a parasite or a fungus... Consult a doctor...

On a side note I believe over a certain spf it really becomes gimmicky...

Absolutely. Anything above SPF 30 is useless.

Actually it is not. My wife has issues with the sun and uses SPF 100. It does make a difference. I tan easily, but when I use anything over 30, I get no color. This statement is like saying any engine pushing over 300 hp in car is useless since 50 hp will get the car moving. I think you would agree it is not.

what are your symptoms?  let me guess... if you run really fast/really far you eventually get short of breath and have a hard time breathing????  and it doesn't get better until you stop running really fast????

If so, I can conclude that you are in fact literally being poisoned by the air and you should stop breathing right away.

I was eating lunch today and someone in the line ordering ahead of me was stating the things her kids were allergic to., as the list included eggs, milk, soy, cheese, etc. Seems to me that at times we way over protect ourselves. You could be allergic to air if you spent your early years in pure oxygen. Without exposing yourself to things, we cannot build up the immunities necessary. Although the OP was not impacted by this, much in today's society reflects this. Although living in Arkansas can make you allergic to air since it is almost 100% water.

No, that is not how SPF works. Horsepower scales 1:1, SPF rating does not.

UVB is what causes burns and SPF is the % under optimal conditions that the sunscreen will block.

    SPF 15 blocks 94%
    SPF 30 blocks 97%
    SPF 50 blocks 98%
    SPF 100 blocks 99%

When properly applied nobody will notice a difference in the 1-2% difference between 30 and 100. SPF ratings are the most misunderstood thing ever.
