I have the Z370 Micro.

While tuning some memory timings I got a few failed POSTs. No problem, power the computer off, then hit the reset Cmos button. Let the motherboard do it's thing, load previously saved settings, adjust and go on.

Except - one time something must have gone wrong. Suddenly, the computer doesn't POST, and when booting or clearing cmos it gets stuck at a range of POST codes. They are 23, 49, 15, C, 4C and 0A, from most common to least common.

Only C makes any sense, which should mean CPU power failure. However, when switching to BIOS2, the computer works fine. So apparently BIOS1 is corrupt somehow.

EVGA support told me to "try to restore the primary BIOS", but there is no mentioning of this in the manual. How do I do this?

Help?

Edit First step:   Did you try to totally clear the CMOS ?  page 45  On the fail BIOS 1 ?

This is the BIOS link for Z370  https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2750721

Boot to & with BIOS2  (might be F12 during POST)

On MB change BIOS switch to the other position and flash BIOS, if clearing BIOS fails,

Remember to load default BIOS first (if possible) & after Flashing

This does not seem like a safe thing to do. Not going to try this unless an EVGA official recommends it.

Do you mean taking the battery out and also completely uplugging power for a few minutes? If so, yes.

I've had some contact via the forms on the EVGA website. They told me to "try to resore the primary BIOS", but not how.
May need to call them tomorrow....

No --->External Clear CMOS Button (by PS/2 port on back of MB)  page 13

Try the USB method in post  https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2750721

Set MB to BIOS1 and see if it will POST

if it does POST - select  "default BIOS", save & reboot, reenter BIOS1 & then Flash

I asked in the MB BIOS thread hope someone addresses the issue - selecting different BIOS from a Booted machine to flash the other BIOS

Yeah, I've tried that _a lot_ of times.

It won't POST, that's the problem.

We can wait for EVGA to reply to my Post & PM to see if it is safe to move the BIOS switch as I recommended as a Last Resort in Post #2 & in BIOS thread - linked above

If that method will Not work or is Not recommended -- maybe EVGA can send you a replacement BIOS chip, if it is user changeable ?

Put your Bios File on a USB Stick and switch to BIOS2 turn on your computer enter the Bios and then change to BIOS1 and update the Bios from within the Bios.
I have been doing this on the EVGA Motherboards for Years, so glad they added the ability to update the Bios from inside the Bios.

You can do this from within the Bios or from a USB Flash DOS Boot.
How to Create a DOS Boot Flash Drive Link1 Or Link2 (Link3 HP's Software).

Same as the Below:
1. Download the HP Flash Utility hpflash1.zip and also download the Windows 98 MS-DOS System Files win98boot.zip. Extract hpflash1 to a location readily accessible.

*  HP Flash Utility - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.2.3 Here
2.  Run the installer (HP Flash Utility) and follow the simple on-screen instructions
3. Extract the contents of "win98boot" to a location readily accessible
4.
Run the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool that was just installed. Choose your flash drive from the drop down list at the top. Also make sure that the file system is set to FAT32.
5. Under Format Options tick the "Create a DOS startup disk" option. Click the "..." button near the empty text box to browse to the location of where you extracted the Windows 98 MS-DOS System Files (see step 3).

Change the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files as shown below:

CONFIG.SYS File
device=HIMEM.SYS /testmem:off
dos=high,umb
files=64
buffers=32
stacks=9,256

AUTOEXEC.BAT file to what is below or delete it.
@echo off

Re: How to restore a faulty BIOS? 2018/08/07 09:39:51 (permalink)
Got the final response from the support team: it works! Here's what I did if anyone needs it:

0) Make sure the good BIOS is at default settings (they didn't specify this but it can't hurt)
1) Boot into windows with the BIOS switch set to the good BIOS
2) Download the latest updater tool for my board
3) Set the switch to the bad BIOS and execute the BIOS updater tool
4) Let the machine do its thing, a few shut on/offs like a normal BIOS updater
5) ???
6) PROFIT!

Thanks everyone, seems like you weren't that far off, Cool GTX!

0) Really is a Best Practice. You should never update a Bios without fist setting the Bios back to the Defaults.
Never update a Bios with Custom CPU and Memory Overclock Settings.

Cool GTX and bcavnaugh are both correct here.  One of the reasons for multiple BIOS on motherboards is that it does allow you some extra flexibility to recover from a bad flash or bad settings that may have corrupted the BIOS.  Glad that everything worked out for you!

Some of us like MB that have a 3 switch positions  with one position that point to a easy removable bios chip.
