So I'm running a program called SpinRite to try recovering my data from a busted hard drive and I receive this message:

Please note:

SpinRite does not have access to SMART data published by the current physical drive. The drive may not be publishing SMART data, or the drive's controlling BIOS may not be publishing the drive's hardware address. Lack of SMART data prevents SpinRite from monitoring the drive's status while under a workload, but all other maintenance and data recover operations remain functional.

I just have a standard Western Digital hard drive, so I don't think the former error is the problem. How can I enable SMART statistics in my motherboard?

Well first off I don't think spinrite will read smart data if the drive is in raid. The motherboard will push smart data if its not in raid, since its busted it might be that the hard drive is having troubles sending its smart data. What kind of busted is this drive? Click of death or just unreable/not usable.

It's not the click of death... yet. It reaches about 100,000 megabytes in SpinRite and then it causes SpinRite to error out. I contacted SpinRite customer service and he said that if I change my bus adapter setting from AHCI to IDE, then I can get SMART statistics off the drive. I'll try that this weekend.

Reason I ask is because sometimes drive failure is a firmware problem, not a mechanical one. And if the firmware does something crazy you very well might not be able to read smart data off it no matter what settings you change. Its rare but I have seen it.

I was able to remove both disks from the RAID array and then I blanked them using DBAN. One's made it to the electronic recycling, and the other seems like it might be on the way there since it's having trouble booting. Thanks for your input.
