I am a "Newbie" as its put towards me.  I AM JUST LOOKING FOR HELP GUYS IS ALL, AS WELL, WE ALL MUST START Somewhere, Just AS YOU did in Your Beginning...

I have a (2) Part Question(s):

#1. -  I would like to know how TO or How I can "SAFELY" OVERCLOCK MY GTX-460. I have the GTX-460 v2 OC From the factory. Its my understanding that GeForce OR nVidia has a total of (3) of these GTX-460 Cards when they were available (poss. still are at other places) But at any rate I have the one I just mentioned, (v2) WITH 1GB GDDR5.

I would like to know how far I can "SAFELY" Push this card WITHOUT DAMAGING IT & JUST WHAT TO BE WATCHFUL OF WHILE DOING IT!!.

I DO HAVE the "Tools" from EVGA, like EVGA Precision X, EVGA OC Scanner X, EVGA Precision, EVGA E-LEET TUNING UTILITY, ET-6, CPUID CPU-Z OC, CPUID CPU-Z G1 (This Program is one that was 2 BE made for my Motherboard for Gigabyte) PLUS A FEW OTHER O/C Tools AS WELL.

My Motherboard is a Z68-AP-D3 (v2) Gigabyte, with a 2nd Gen 4-CORE  i5-2500K (Unlocked version) which I have just on Simple "Turbo Boost" & has it running at 3.67MHz. PLUS I have  8GB Corsair XMS 3 Memory - Low Voltage at 1.5v, (6) Large Fans WITH A Combination of BOTH IN-Pulling of Air & OUT-Pushing of Air for good Air-Flow Cooling. I Do NOT have any "Coolers" of any type, Either CPU OR on my G.Card, WHICH I Do know if I get to the Serious Overclocking, I WILL NEED TO GET SOME TYPE & I AM OPEN FOR SUGGESTIONS ON THIS AS WELL TOO GUYS, Just looking FOR HELP!!.

#2 -  The 2nd part of my question, may actually be answered by the FIRST PART, as I am not sure. BUT WHICH PROGRAM THAT I HAVE I THE BEST TO USE TO ACTUALLY DO the Overclocking With? What are the "MAIN" things For Me To Watch out for as to NOT DAMAGE my card??

I apologize about the Underlining/BOLD BUTTONS  on this part, but the Underline & BOLD TOOLs ARE NOT WORKING RIGHT NOW!!!

Thanks for ANY HELP from the WELL Educated Forum Posters, I just hope that you understand, that a Newbie like Myself MUST START SOMEWHERE, just as you did in YOUR Start/Beginning of Overclocking, so Please keep that in mind when replying.

Sincerely,
AWMEANS

I assume by safe you mean "stable". If you want to be ultimately safe, don't overclock at all. But if you are looking for a stable overclock, then you will have to test it.

Each card, even if the same brand and model, overclocks differently. The easiest way to start is to increase the clock by 5Mhz. There a lot of methods for seeing if you're stable, like benchmarking, burn-in tools, and stress tests. These are good once you find a clock speed that doesn't give you any weird problems after a few minutes.

What I recommend is to do a Google search for your card and recorded overclocks. I usually do this to get a feel as to what I can attempt to do.

Here is an article all about your card and you can see what performance increases you could achieve.

If you are new to this, then don't look into overvolting as this has the greatest potential to kill your card if you don't do this properly. The only time you really need to do this is after you find a stable overclock and want to push it a bit further.

I do recommend undervolting as you can save power and thus the life of your card for a bit longer. While you should know overclocking will do the opposite. However, you can apply undervolting and overclocking to balance out the two if you want.

As for a program, EVGA Precision is great. I use that but prefer MSI Afterburner.

Thanks a BUNCH  For answering my basic question(s) & the other sites to look at & look for!!! Much Much Appreciated!!

As being new, I thought I might get "Slammed" or something to that effect, from what I've heard on "Other" overclocking Forums. So I really do Appreciate the info!! Is there an "Easy way 4 me to obtain the "MSI Afterburner program"??

As I do not have any MSI Products, just GeForce, nVidia, Corsair, PNY, Gigabyte & EVGA & a few more, but no MSI ITEMS of course...

Again, I Cannot Thank You Enough, For YOUR INPUT!! To at Least Get me Started in the RIGHT DIRECTION!!
    Sincerely,

You can just type in "Afterburner Download" in Google and find it from the MSI page. You don't need one of their products to obtain it.

Again, just go through a couple of overclocking reviews for your card as I'm sure they will all get different results. I would then see which review/thread/article had the lowest overclock and aim for that first. If you make that, then you could shoot for something higher.

Just to a little insight to my experiences with my 460. I bought a Geforce 460 SuperClocked 2 years ago, and it is overclocked for almost all of the time it is being used. I use EVGA Precision X which i find to be a really good program. Ill give you some numbers I have gotten.

Under stock power settings I can get my core clock to hit 800 mhz
    Stable

With 1000mV I can get the core clock to 850
    Stable

With max voltage which im sure is a terrible idea i can get it to 925 mhz and it tends to work for an hour or two but then crashes
    Unstable/Unsafe (I think)

My two GTX460 2GB set overclock to 911/2020mhz at Voltage 1150mv it so stable and never have any crash yet so far good with temp running at between from 55c to 70c with very high usgae at depend 60 to 90%.

I have try go to 925mhz what ANTJAR did but Antjar right no good cause crash and notice the temp went up too hot so I turn down to 911mhz then the temp is good cooler!! I think we can't go over 920mhz!! I have try increase voltage 1175mv but still no good!!!

Forget to tell you that I have use fan curve in Precision X change to increase graphic high speed to keep cooler my cards!

Only thing to watch out for are temps. I wouldn't go over 90c, but I really doubt you will see those temps with manual fan control. Let's us know or max over clock!

In your case if you feel confident and know what you're doing I'd replace the TIM.

Don't know how to do that, but its really not a problem my card hovers at 65 when im oced to my stable oc so it doesn't really matter, also im under warranty so if it became a problem I would just RMA it.

If you don't feel confident replacing your TIM don't do it. Over a long period of time the TIM can start to dry out so a nice fresh coating can really make a difference.
