So... I'm trying to flash my BIOS but I can't even boot with USB storage plugged in. I had to disable Legacy USB settings in Integrated Peripherals. Oh, and my DVD drive is being retarded. Might try to use my old CD drive.

Welcome to the forums. Actually, it sounds like you have a hardware malfunction. But without more info about your exact settings (BIOS and bootable USB drive formatting) and exact steps used (including the setup of your bootable USB drive), it is impossible to make a conclusion. It is not enough to just say "I did it like the thing said", often when ppls recite their procedure 'step-by-step', in detail, a fatal error shows. In other words, we need A LOT more info to help you.

Main (gaming) rig: i7-3930K; Asus Rampage IV Extreme; H100 W/p-p Excaliburs, AS5; MSI 7870 2GD5/OC; Crucial M4 SSD 256GB.
See my primary ModsRigs: Adam for the rest, and I have a second (wife's) rig Asus Rampage III Extreme & 960: Eve.

Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.

Re:How To Flash Your Bios From USB - Made Easy (remade) 2011/08/11 08:27:54 (permalink)
Tried the raffiekol method this morning...

Had the usb formatted, placed the autoexec and awdflash files in, placed in my rev 82 bin file.  renamed to bios.bin.

I just used the stock auto-exec it came with.  I read further in this thread others suggested modifying it, but I saw a lot of, good guide, works comments that made me think the stock file was fine?

Restarted, hit esc, chose usb drive.  awdflash came up, install completed, hit f1, then darkness.

Sat for a minute, just darkness.  Rebooted and more darkness.  No load screen, no beep saying it was booting up.  Just the fans spinning, the lights on, and a dark screen.

I assume the bios is hosed now.  I've not had this happen in the 10 years I've been building(and flashing) systems, so not sure what I did wrong.

Thoughts, ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Did you try a full bios reset?  Maybe pull the battery and let it sit for a while.....?

No, I did this just before work so had to leave in dispair

I'll give it a shot after work.  Just disconnect the power supply and remove the battery?  Let it sit for a while, like an hour?

Yep, when I do it, I disconnect everything, especially the power supply of course, then pull the battery and let it sit for at least an hour or so...   Doesn't sound like much, but this has actually fixed machines in the past for me...

 Good luck...

Re:How To Flash Your Bios From USB - Made Easy (remade) 2011/08/11 15:59:38 (permalink)
That did the trick, thanks.  I thought that was the old school way to clear the cmos, didn't know it reset the bios??  What's gigabytes deal with dual bios then?

Anyway - updated my autoexec file to include
awdflash <bios filename> /sn /cc /cd /wb /py
and the flash worked this time.

I was concerned about my raid 0 setup because the first time it didn't see my second hard drive(funny enough I could boot into windows just fine, and it saw the capacity of both drives?), so i rebooted and loaded defaults, saved, and went back in and it saw them.  Went through and updated my settings, including sata to raid, and everythings cool.

Thanks again!

I've tried this tutorial twice now and it's  just not working for me. My motherboard is a P55 FTW and the problem im my sound cuts out when playing video games and i heard the only way to fix this is to update my bios so I tried to flash my bios.  So when I get to the screen to flash my motherboard it just says missing binary file not award bios and that line just blinks repeatedly. I also tried all the command codes u guys suggested such as "awdflash bios.bin /py /sy /nvmac or /sn /cc /cd /wb /y even /sy /cc /cd /wb" it all just doesn't work so right now I'm at a stand still. Also this is my first time flashing a motherboard so I don't exactly know what I'm doing.

Use to flash my BIOS with a USB, but I find a DVD is a hell of a lot easier. Windows 7 can burn ISO Images, I just burned an ISO of Windows for someone today actually.

Yeeaa...I should of said this also I tried using a CD and DVD if it made a difference but yea when I get to screen of flashing my motherboard with a CD it just says source file is missing so I'm still at a stand still.

So after reading some of the dangers of the USB flash, would it be a safe bet to just continue flashing from CD?

Will this work on a different motherboard if I just change the batch file, the exe file and the actual patch file?

Agreed.  About 7 years ago I remember messing around with my HP PC and I dont know why but i decided to update the bios, I forget why and i forget what went wrong but when i called tech support I remember the lady practically yelling at me and belittling me with comments and telling me I was basically an idiot for trying to flash a bios for no real reason other than I wanted everything up to date.  i dunno if she was already having a bad day or what but it tought me never to flash or update your bios without permission and a reason.

Wow man, I was having the same motherboard 790i and was stuck at same point.. Kind off got frustrated that I have to format my PC every month or 2 coz SLI GTX 560Ti drivers are messing.. added no safe mode in Windows 8.. Pain in the Ass.. Was wondering if this bios update might get me out of hell.. Let me know if you get solution..

Re:How To Flash Your Bios From USB - Made Easy (remade) 2013/02/13 00:30:03 (permalink)
I know this thread has pretty much fizzled out but just in case....

Some things to note about USB thumb drives
*Do not use 3.0 ports for flashing. Stick to v2.0 ports as they are much less likely to cause problems. This is mainly because v3 is newer and v3 support can be still be buggy.
*Similar to v3 ports, do not use USB v3.0 thumb drives. These devices tend to have more issues then their older v2.0 siblings. And for the same reasons.
*Not all USB thumb drives can be used as boot devices. This is more so with v3.0 and v1.0 devices. Test with a plain DOS boot or Ubuntu to be safe.

With the above out of the way, there are several alternative utilities for setting up a thumb drive to boot. All of these utils can be found at pendrivelinuxdotcom. The one I use the most is Yumi. It's great for Linux distros and most other things that come in an .ISO image format. And yes I tested it with the most recent BIOS update .ISO for my X58 FTW3. Works like a charm. All you need to do in Yumi is scroll down to the bottom of listed distros to "Bootable ISOs" and select "Try an unlisted ISO".

One thing... I of course did not read through all the posts, don't be like me in this, so it was a surprise when the update utility immediately started the BIOS update. All my previous flashing experiences has been of the manual variety. Anyhow, if you desire to make changes to the command line switches in the autoexec.bat file, you will first have to edit it. But how do you edit a file in an ISO you ask? A great program for that is UltraISO. Use it to load any ISO image and from within UltraISO, have complete access to individual files. You can of course use notepad to edit the autoexec.bat file and save it. When finished, have UltraISO save all modified files into the ISO image.

Hope this helps.

Peace,
NeoMuse

I'm trying to update this 790i ultra and i'm getting the following error in awdflash:

'The programs part number does not match your system'

I've downloaded both nf79p09 and nf79p10 and get the same error each time.
Also, theres a part number that appears after trying that i find interesting because it doesn't match my motherboard.

'For Alienware-6a61mb04c-00' Date: 04/18/08

[EDIT] SOLVED using /QI switch ( awdflash.exe xxxxxx.bin /QI ). This board had a custom alienware bios and needed to be overwritten.
