I had this strange idea to try to make my own using clay, some kind of oil, and silver shavings

Sounds like that would be difficult to make because it would need to be able to flatten out to remove all air pockets. Silver shavings would also make it conductive. Thermal paste seems to be cheap enough now that making your own wouldn't be practical. Could make an interesting experiment for YouTube as long as its not just tooth paste as that has been done before.

Can't say that I have. Although I've seen a few others experiment with it. It's just so cheap now a days it doesn't seem practical.

Well, this might be stretching the definition of 'make your own thermal paste' a bit, but... maybe not. Either way, here's a video regarding using "Household Products as Thermal Paste" by JayzTwoCents:

Moving to Overclocking, Cooling, and Benchmarking section. This could be an interesting topic.

If anyone here is a chemist then I'm sure it's possible, but of course I prefer to buy thermal pastes on the web from companies I know.

If you're going to do this, I would suggest using old hardware you don't care about. Or be very careful where you apply it, like a member posted it would be conductive. I don't think it would be worth the trouble, unless you're doing it for laughs.

This is the exact video I was thinking of when I said if they do try to make it they should record it for YouTube. I like JayzTwoCents videos, but I wish he would put out more videos now that he has a studio to work out of. He also uploaded a video of the 1080ti FTW3 today.

I doubt I would record it. Don't have the proper setup nor workstation for doing things like that

I would just stick with store bought. Less hassle.

I couldn't see it really working to well since you are talking about a paste that is supposed to fill a very small imperfections in the metal on both the top of the CPU and the bottom of the CPU cooler to make sure they have as great of contact as possible. When you think that a CPU cooler can come with almost a mirror shine on it the imperfections we are talking about are microscopic and I can't see it being something you could make at home. To thick and it would have a negative effect on cooling.

Well it's only suppose to be a little fun creative experiment. I'm not looking to replace store bought

You probably can make your own thermal paste, but would be a bit like making your own motor oil. You will likely never get it to be as good as what is cheaply available on the market and you risking delicate/expensive components to do it.
