Hello everyone, thanks in advance for your help. I have an EVGA 850G PSU and whilst trying to get everything connected I have ran into an issue. I have been supplied with an EPS12V cable with an 8pin connection on one side and a 4+4 pin connection on the other end, the problem is that the 8pin connection is for a VGA port and is not compatible with the CPU1 or CPU2 slot on the PSU. I have not tried to power it up with the CPU connected to a VGA port as I am not sure if it is safe to do so. I have a different cable from a corsair power supply, this was compatible with the motherboard 4+4 pin and with the EVGA CPU1 connection slot. However, the pc would not boot with this plugged in using the corsair cable. I have included some photos of the EVGA cable in question and the EVGA PSU. Please can you advise on whether it will be safe to power my CPU using the EVGA CPU cable plugged into the VGA port on the power supply, and if not, have I received a faulty cable? Many thanks, Matthew

Do NOT use a EPS power cable from another Brand OR Model of PSU .... they Might be pinned differently Every PSU output pins can be wired Different ... those cables are "Custom" wired so the Proper Voltage & ground connections are made at the Device End That is why the instructions Warn you to Only use the cable set that can with that PSU You are saying that the supplied EPS 8-pin does Not fit into the PSU ---> the square & angles plastic housing does not match the PSU output socket ? You would have to contact EVGA Customer Service for a replacement cable Contact Customer Service Make sure you have registered the PSU - before contacting Customer Service Product Registration

Where did you get that EPS12V (CPU Power) cable with an 8pin connection on one end and a 4+4 pin connection on the other end, Corsair cable, huh? The power and ground terminals on 8 pin and 4+4 pin CPU power connectors are exactly opposite from a PCIe/VGA (video card) connector..Never interchange them, it is not safe to do so. A different CPU Power cable from another power supply would work as long as the component-end pinout is correct and it fits in the PSUs CPU Power socket..You can remove and rearrange the component-end terminals if needed..Pinouts are shown as if you're looking into the end of the connector, unless otherwise specified..If the wires aren't color-coded, you would need a voltmeter to check them for +/- polarity..You can buy an el cheapo digital voltmeter at any auto parts store or someplace like Walmart for about $10 to $15 that will do the job. Otherwise, you can Contact EVGA Customer Service to get the right cable, or CableMod. Personally, I would go buy a cheap voltmeter and rearrange the terminals as needed..Cheaper than buying a cable/paying shipping. Jump start a PSU for bench testing

No the original cable that came with the power supply seems to have a VGA connection at one end and the 4+4 connection at the MOBO side. I won’t try and power up with this cable. The other cable was a Corsair cable from another build. Although it didn’t boot with this as I assume it is pinned differently? Thank you for the advice though, I will look into getting a voltmeter. Kind regards, Matthew

Yeah, the 4+4 end is for mobo CPU power and the 8-pin end should fit in the PSU sockets labeled CPU, but clearly it won't..Looks like a goof on EVGAs part..You can call or email EVGA Customer Service about it and see if they'll send you out another/proper cable..They're usually labeled on the connector part (VGA, PCI-E, whatever). A voltmeter is always nice to have around, even an el cheapo with do the job..Best to check things with one if ever in doubt..Can save you massive quantities of grief.

What bob said. The 4+4 end is what you plug into your motherboard. AUX+AUX connector equals a single EPS12V connector. It's a holdover from when boards only used AUX connectors. And yes, you have discovered that the ATX specification goofed up big time, the 8-pin EPS12V connector can be plugged into an 8-pin PCIe GPU plug. The pinouts are different and will destroy hardware if the PSU doesn't detect it and abort powering up in time. Always better to be safe than sorry, so I'm glad you double checked here!
Have water, will cool.
