Is there really that big of a difference between 1080p and 1440p on P.C, I've been accustomed to 1080p for so long now.
Oh, for sure! If you get a system that gets you 120FPS on 4k, with the right monitor, definitely a different experience. The differences can be seen in FPS games, racing games, fast action in general.

I play COD at 1440p 165hz with a 3070 and average 120-130 fps

I'd say 1440p. 3070/3070Ti are powerful cards and will be able to provide great experience at that resolution plus to second what everybody has been saying - it's a more futureproof purchase. I made the mistake of buying a 1080P in 2020 and boy do I regret it now.

Thanks everyone! Just got back from Vacation - Just wanted to follow up - I ended up with a 3070! No 1440p monitor yet though. I'm not trying to go competitive in any game (maybe OW occasionally, but I am well aware of the advantages of 1080p and high frames in that setting).
But yes, the difference from 1080p to 1440p is astounding - especially in visually striking games with large high quality worlds.

I would recommend the Gigabyte G27Q if you want to save some money. IPS 165hz 1440p for $250 on frequent sales, seems like a good pairing for the 3070 or 3070ti

My gtx970 rocks 1080p for any games. I don't see a reason to own a 3070 for 1080, imho.

So here is a beginner question. Right now I play with a 1060 (6GB) on a laptop hooked to a 27" 1080p/144Hz. Assuming I can track down a new GPU and build and assuming I upgrade to a 1440p/144Mhz (or faster), at what point does the human eye simply not see a difference in frame rates. Because my card limits me in some games, I can definitely notice between say 30fps and 60 fps and between 60fps and lets say 90fps, but is there really a noticeable difference beyond say 100-120 fps? I am looking for anecdotal evidence obviously.
There is a good video about this done by Linus on the youtube. but it basically comes down to you noticing it, but the higher the frames, the less you notice. But higher frames means smoother gaming, which is pleasant for your eyes.

depends on the frame rate. FPS, you need super high frame rates to gain advantage. Single player, even 60 fps is "enough".

Well - no official purchase yet, but after checking more reviews, I'm going with the GIGABYTE G34WQC. Trying to convince my wife that its a good father's day present - but it hasn't worked so far lol.
