I've had this card for a few years now and it was my gaming workhorse till i just updated to an EVGA 1070. I knew when i purchased this card it was going to throttle on me seen as though it has a blower style fan, but i didn't think it was going to be as bad as it was. I did extensive googling on it for this particular model, but i honestly couldn't find much that could help. I also toyed with the idea of searching a BIOS update on it from say TechPowerUp, but at the time there was none to be found, so instead of pursuing it any further, i just bit the bullet and tried to enjoy the card and manage my way round it. Now that i have replaced it with the 1070, I'm keen and daring enough to try and breath some new life back into it, and install it in another machine i have. If anyone has any suggestions on how to tame its heat and throttling so i can maximize its performance, it would give me some confidence in using it again, but right now, its a hard sell cause it has a TDP of 230 watts, and i have a 950 sc in that machine right now that seems to be out-witting the 770 in almost every test i've done. I know the 770 should be a better card than the 950, but it comes at a huge TDP and temp cost to make it so. I've already done what i can with Precision X, and re-done TIM, but its not enough. I'm thinking this card needs a more serious approach to make it better. Card Info. Model Name. - EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclocked Model No. - 02G-P4-2771-KR BIOS. Stock. - 80.04.C3.00.72 Anyone ?

Also, does anyone know if this card uses an nVidia reference PCB ? I'm open to cooling/modding suggestions to bring its temps down which can reach into the 90's in a worse case scenario, typically it stays in the 80's. I don't know what after-market options are available to me. I'd even be happy swapping out the blower fan for an open shroud type if it was possible. Being 2016, i might be pushing it to find anything for it tho....

So it's getting into the 80's & 90's with the gpu fan at 100%? The card does use a reference pcb.

@ 100 %, i can get it down to mid 70's, but the fan noise is absolutely horrendous. I don't like typically going over 80% for that reason, but even 80% is pretty loud, and puts it in mid 80's. I find myself having to run the fan at-least 80% to result in a slight reduction of throttling, and i don't think having to run the fan near 100% is acceptable to get this card to run cool enough to see a reasonable reduction in throttling. It throttles no-matter what i do really, but obviously varies with temp. Its always been a hot running card, and if i leave Precision X to automatically control the card with defaults, it wants to keep it in low 80's, changing parameters in Precision X doesn't seem to yield much of an improvement either. Its always been a hot card, and i can't help but feel the blower is seriously holding it back.

How much is the card throttling?

I don't have it installed right now, but going from memory, generally it was at-least 100mhz. I ran the thing for years, so i don't particularly need or want to install it just yet to quote precise figures, or to know its got problems. Initially was hoping someone could lead me to a possible BIOS update, or make me aware of a unique issue to these cards that i wasn't aware of. I've also read a few threads where other 770 reference style owners had similar temp issues, but couldn't find a solution in their discussions.

Mid 80's is hot. I wouldn't want my card running in the mid 80's all the time. 98c is the max allowed temp for a 770 so you should technically be just fine. To stop the throttling you could try running a higher temp target inside precision.

Yeh like i said, PX adjustments wasn't yielding much of a change in all sorts of configurations i tried. I remember by default PX sets temp target to 82c, which i also adjusted. I know by nature this card is supposed to be one of them cards that just runs hot for the most part, but it does really seem to me like the throttling is excessive, on my particular card anyways. I've been playing with graphics cards since the S3 Virge lol, so I've been around the GPU block.

The card should only throttle back 13MHz at 70, 80 & 90c. If it's throttling down more than that something is definitely wrong. When the card was throttling was the power target being met/exceeded too?

I can install it over the next few days and check back with specifics, but i was really wanting to avoid it. You keep hitting me with questions lol. Are there solutions around, or does this look like its not worthwhile ? Like i said thers a 950 SC in it right now and swapping it out is a hard sell. If i can't get a solid improvement, it'l stay as an ornament on the shelf. I'd also like to know if a bios update was released to address its thermals. I noticed EVGA are a bit private with their bios updates. They don't show in the support download area, and i've noticed people having to specifically request bios files via tech support directly, so i have no idea what options are available there.

Solutions... #1 Buy this aftermarket cooler to take care of the temps. #2 Flash a custom vbios to your card to prevent all throttling.

+1 on the aftermarket cooler. A very large chassis can also help a little with high temps
