That is why I mentioned that a choice of a chassis is very important when using a high end graphics video card.

Moltenlava daveyd007 Moltenlava daveyd007 If you look at the case that was used in that review, it will answer your question as to why the temps were so high. There's no air intake fan on the side of the case for the GPU to breath. Hence, it wouldn't be something I would want to use for any expensive GPU. Not sure what gave you that idea. I just looked and not only is there a picture of the test set-up being on a bench and not in a case but also the specifications list it as "Chasssis" - "None (open Bench)". link: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1258/4/ So that cant be used as an excuse for the high temps, infact those temps should actually be better than you could expect from any case. Page 15; last paragraph. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1258/15/ Yeah sorry just had a look over it again and saw that. No biggie, I just wanted to point it out for others looking at this review.

This is why more reviewers run a open air bench case for these kinda things, and even then how using a case with such bad setup for air cooling(Great case for WC though) as the 800D seemed like an acceptable option is beyond me.

If you look at evga video showing off GTX480 in SLi you will see the card hit 91ºC. The side of the case wasn't on in the video. Looks like you will need more then a $200 case to keep Fermi temps in check.

EVGA_JacobF Thats not idle, thats load. Depending on the app the 480 load temp is around 90c. With waterblock though it is around 49c :) Would that be with the fan speed on auto, during a stability test? 90 degrees Celsius is a really hot temperature.

Looks like you will need more then a $200 case to keep Fermi temps in check. That is with a pretty substantial overclock too though. You can't forget to take that into consideration. Who knows if that overclock required voltage tweaking and if so, that makes the results look all that much more favorable. My top GTX 285 reaches over 95c in tri-SLI when subjected to FurMark with the case side panel off with a +30mv core voltage increase. Given my present circumstances, the results of the GTX 480 don't seem too unexpected or surprising. It is pretty obvious that present graphics technology pretty much has no more room to grow given present PCI certification requirements and present air cooling technology. Being on the bleeding edge will have consequences. There should not be too many surprises.

reason i love my tech bench. in most cases tech benches can run components hotter if there is not flowing air but i have 4 120x38mm blowing directly onto all components (2 aimed at bottom of vid card one aimed at right side top (where those little inlet holes are) only way i could get my 295 to 775mhz on full voltage and a stock cooler

When i was running a single LCD on the 5850 the clock rate was 150Mhz or so and then when i did Eyefinity that clock rate is 400Mhz as i thought something was wrong but no it has to be that high to run all 3 LCD's which gives me a 50c idle temp at 23% fan speed with the stock cooler.. I just think in time Nvidia will get better in these areas as the card really seems rushed to martket by 6 months to a year or so and adding waterblocks is not the real answer to the issue as alot of people want no part of watercooling or had the budget in place for it.

Are the temps from the 480 any different from the 280's? My Antec 1200 is loud enough with all the fans and 2 280's @ 100% fan speed but, will going to a 480 be anything new(heat, noise, power consumption)?
I will either find a way, or make one. ٩(๏̯͡๏)۶
