I have a GTX 760 and just got a new ASUS VS2484 1080p monitor with HDMI in and speakers. So I got an HDMI cable instead of using the DVI I used for the previous monitor.

After some false starts, got the HDMI video signal to work. Verified the audio is enabled and the monitor volume up.
Yet no audio.

I tried the instructions here:
(hey, my link got deleted - it was the 760 manual)
and here:
(also deleted! That's helpful. It was the EVGA FAQ 'how to enable HDMI audio')

and enabled the HDMI Audio device, which is recognized and displays as:
VS248-4
NVIDIA High definition Audio
(checked) Default Device

Audio's not muted.

Nothing.

Restarted PC from power off, uninstalled NVIDIA drivers, did a clean install of the latest driver, verified everything's enabled again...

Nothing.

One thing I notice different between the instructions and what I get onscreen is this:
(This was the screenshot of the NVIDIA control panel here link copied from the EVGA faq linked above)
The screenshot shows "Connector" having two choices - Audio Enabled and Audio Disabled.

I don't get that. I get one choice.
Connector - HDMI-HDTV (no dropdown, no choices)

Anyone have any ideas why I can't get sound? I don't even know how good the speakers in the monitor are, but I at least want to hear them. They would be more convenient than the external analog ones I have.

When you did your driver install, did you install everything, through the easy install option?

If so, go into your control panel, remove add hardware, and verify the nvidia audio driver is in there. If not, you should uninstall all nvidia drivers (some may require a restart, make sure you do each restart as it requests.

Once that is done, download nvidia driver 347.09 at nvidia.com/drivers and start the install.

Do Not Use the Easy Function.

Click Custom Install, select the audio driver and PhysX driver, unchecked all of the other stuff. Then click clean install. Now install them.

Once it is done, restart again. Go into control panel, hardware and sound, sound, and then see if you can select your monitor there.

I can see the monitor as an audio device. I can select it. I just get no audio.
And in the NVIDIA control panel, I get only the connection "Connector - HDMI-HDTV" not two versions with Audio Enabled and Audio Disabled.

When I did a total uninstall and clean install of the drivers, I did a Custom Install with all options, including the audio driver.

I can see the monitor listed:
    VS248-4
    NVIDIA High definition Audio
    (checked) Default Device

Silly question... Are you sure the monitor has speakers? My monitor has hdmi with a 3.5mm audio out, so it passes sound through, but has no speakers...

Just have to ask, just in case.

Well, crap. It's got a built in volume control for the monitor, but to actually use the HDMI Audio you have to CONNECT HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS TO A JACK IN THE BACK OF IT.Asus wasn't clear on that in the manual, it just said the headphone jack only works when HDMI is plugged in (which of course makes sense, otherwise how is audio getting to the device?).

I guess I assumed that since it had HDMI audio acceptance and a headphone jack it had speakers.

    Totally my bad guys. Thanks!

Hey, it happens. At least it was an easy fix. Now, get rid of the audio drivers from. NVidia, they can be a hassle.

If you uninstalling all your driver's and only install the video driver and PhysX, (no 3d, geforce experience or audio stuff) you will probably have less issues in the future. Just a helpful tidbit, just in case.
